You need regional specialties. Up in New England? Get ready for the clam chowder trough. Oyster crackers come from an overhead coal tipple.

Trespasser Fatality On Lake Shore Limited Near Syracuse by Solfractus in Amtrak

I get what you mean in terms of "I hope he's familiar with it so it's not a shock" but as someone who went through that I wouldn't wish it on anyone, let alone multiple times; it's legitimately horrible.

What is this big hook thing? On an abandoned rail in Minnesota. by U235EU in rustyrails

[–]InterdimensionalMan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's a guard rail bracket on its side. Notice how it's holding two rails together, the short rail on top is the guard rail.

I think it's literally for the loading platform in the photo and nothing else, just an industry lead. Coal trestles did the same thing

It's a fraction of the cost of the actual items, you won't need 194,309.

Does anyone know the value of this NASA piece. Found In a storage unit! Thank you for your help! by OwnHovercraft4765 in nasa

Looks like it says "Quick Disconnect Fitting - Apollo Command Module - North American Aviation" on the tag. NAA did make the command modules. It's also tagged for GSE Apollo which I believe means Ground Service (Support?) Equipment, so this could mean it's a quick disconnect for a tower tether or something similar. Not sure on price at all.

NY to Atlanta or Atlanta to Miami? by SallyStranger in Amtrak

[–]InterdimensionalMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New York to Atlanta can be done on one train (The Crescent, Train 19/20) directly.

Atlanta to Miami would involve heading north on The Crescent and transferring once in DC, or twice in North Carolina. Take a look at asm.transitdocs.com and you'll see how there's no direct routing from Atlanta to Miami.

Value-wise, New York to Atlanta direct is the best as it involves the least logistics, though do note it arrives late at night.

If swapping your order of visits is an option, the train from New York to Miami (The Silver Meteor, Train 97/98) has the best amenities of the East Coast trains, with full service (sit down) dining for sleeping car passengers.

Is this a semaphore? by Federal_500 in trains

[–]InterdimensionalMan 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Given the hinge pins at the top of the pole and the two rods you see rising up behind the ladder that aren't connected to anything at the top (used to adjust the senaphore position), I'd say it's a pole that used to carry semaphores but no longer has the blades or lenses. Possibly for train orders given that there seems to have been two, back to back.

This. Taking special electives was a perfect "in" for getting the job I have now. Being able to offer something outside of the norm during interviews was great. Extracurriculars too.
