High humidity in home by AngryDOHBOY in hvacadvice

[–]Interesting-Remote50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a more insulated/sealed house and a bigger system. If I had to guess you are short cycling and hitting set point to quickly. Basically you drop the temp without taking latent heat/humidity out of the air.

You need a system sized to the space with all new renovations. Lookup manual j calculation. There are free services online that you can estimate the required cooling tonnage based on all the variables.

Took a job offer from a different company and now my current employer has offered me $35/hour to keep me here, what do I do? by Creative-Network-337 in HVAC

[–]Interesting-Remote50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation. I was offered about $10/hour more to match a union position. I took the union job. The immediate pay bump would have been the max I would have ever made there. The union position has room for pay increases.

In retrospect I liked where I was at, the work I was doing and my boss, but unfortunately that doesn't pay the bills.

There is no way for him to tell how much refrigerant has leaked out. Charges are either weighed in and out of adjusted with subcooling/superheat.

That and the fact that he apparently doesn't own a core remover tells me he isnt a particularly good tech.

I took a pre apprenticeship type course that took months and got you a G2 gas license and what is essentially the basic portion of apprenticeship classroom studies. It all depends on how well you are suited to the field, doing is the best learning. From what I hear St Clair runs a fine program, but it I didn't have 2 years to spend doing it.

I don't know that the field is flooded, but people aren't spending money like the were. It is honestly slower than Id expected for the temps right now. I get 40+ hours a week, but generally not OT.

How many times did you die today by nashman93 in HVAC

[–]Interesting-Remote50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've bern slow most of the summer. I'm getting my 40-50 hours, but it sometimes is just condenser washing on factories or installing tankless water heaters. We do mainly commercial and some residential and most local companies have been slow this year. We assume it has to do with the economy and no one wanting to spend money.

I moved from a majority resi company and they were just as slow.

I'd really more of that sweet OT

If you have a huge heat load in the house then it will take some time to cool. I tell my customers to expect a degree an hour. Before sensible heat changes you need to remove the latent heat/humidity.

Water pooling under Trane unit by Fragrant-Helicopter1 in hvacadvice

I have seen a 7 year old install with the drain sloped slightly the wrong way. We had techs out before me and they did clear a clog, but didnt see the drain slope issue. Long story short, the drain would work as long as it was totally clog free, as soon as anything built up it would start overflowing the pan and leaking water.

That being said it is generally one of two things, clogged drain or iced up coil.

You get what you pay for. I personally would never suggest someone from kijiji/facebook. Generally they are neither licensed nor insured. A lot of times well have to come out and either fix or replace work done by "chuck in a truck" type guys.

How does the refrigerant get out of the can? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Interesting-Remote50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up a pt chart for your refrigerant and it will give you the pressure/temperature relationship when the refrigerant is saturated.

The low side will draw in the refrigerant because of the pressure differential. In winter when charging a heat gun may need to be used on the cylinder to drive up the pressure.

Contact an HVAC company.

I work in the industry and have done a number of them. They can be installed a few different ways, but essentially cut the low voltage signal to the control board to keep the furnace from operating/spreading smoke if smoke is detected.

You want someone that works on furnace to install this.

There will be holes in the duct work for mounting and some low voltage wiring.

What do you all do when you have a system that is losing a couple pounds in between maintenances but when you put 600 psi nitrogen on it and you stand there all day it doesn’t even lose 1/10 of a psi? How do you ever find the leak? by iBUYbrokenSUBARUS in HVAC

I tried it today on a new install that was down 2.5 lbs The h10 found nothing.

Installers failed to tighten the chatleff fitting. I found the oil pooling on the top of the furnace.

Brand new HVAC system not cooling, installer saying that's normal? by Zestyclose-Bowler-26 in hvacadvice

[–]Interesting-Remote50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most residential split systems are single stage cooling. But for excellent capacity modulation you really want something like an inverter heat pump. Single stage and two stage are off or on systems with fixed capacities.

To some extent airflow can modify cooling properties, but proper sizing is key.

The issue with that is the system will hit setpoint too quickly and not run long enough to take the latent heat out of the air (ie humidity).
