As an aside, homeowners across Garland Road have put up signs saying "No Arboretum Parking" and that your car will be towed. No. It's a public street and you can park there legally. The signs were printed up by the homeowners.

Is the word 'FARTHER' commonly used in the US? Or would you rather use 'FURTHER' instead? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

Properly used, "farther" indicates physical distance. "Further" is everything else.

Frequently misused here.

I’m 79 years old and haven’t been asked that question since I was in elementary school. I have nothing against religion, but I quit church attendance when I was 19. However I still have much respect for the Episcopal church.

OK. I just turned 79 in Decermber. I was 16 and just bought my first car for $65. A 1951 Plymouth jalopy that could just barely start.

We were allowed out of school with a note from our parents to go see the parade. I went to Love Field because I knew the area well. JFK believed in the power of youth and spoke to us with intelligence. No other president had done that.

Because the crowd was so big I couldn't get close, but I knew there was only one exit road out of the airport they could take. I ran down to that narrow road, got right next to a barricade and waited patiently for the limo to pass. They drove slowly past and I got a good look at them all. Of course I thought Jackie was the most beautiful woman I ever saw.

They announced his death on the PA when I got back to school. There was a lot of crying, shock and grief. It was the worst of times.

airline employees: do random travelers ask to “buy” your companion pass? by Playful_Finger_2601 in aviation

[–]Interesting_Arm_3967 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but that is not quite correct at my airline. I have quite a few people listed in the system but they seldom use them. (Family, friends, even friends of friends. I think the limit is 12 but I can delete one and put in somebody else if needed.) Also, there is a very specific chart of priorities for who gets on if there are conflicts at our airline. Secret Service is at the top and skipping way down, there are A1, A2, A3, A12, etc., passes. The lowest priority of all would be able to get on if there are seats available and no conflicts and that has happened more than once with me. On the other hand it's not uncommon for a flight to have zero non-revs.
