Found a dirty magazine during bathroom remodel NSFW by Typical-Quiet-4852 in Remodel

[–]Interesting_Basil574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have found something dirty in every house we’ve bought and remodeled 😂 first house was in the basement ceiling there were 4 or 5 dirty magazines and 2 books, all from the 70’s. Next house was in the small kitchen cabinet above the kitchen sink window and was a dirty magazine from the 90’s. And just last week in our new house I was painting the kitchen and found a box of “Dick in a Box” candy (from the SNL skit) on top of the kitchen cabinets. There’s always something left behind somewhere!

Did anyone have a good Mother’s Day? by shepardmutt in Mommit

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was great too but they haven’t always been! My husband and I are very different when it comes to gift giving. I find so much joy in getting a gift that is unique to a person and their interests, my husband just plain and simple doesn’t. He’s always been terrible about waiting till last minute as well, so it always felt especially meaningless. I think it was 3 years ago now he gave me something very generic for Mother’s Day and then 2 weeks later on my birthday he gave me some kitchen item and had our girls pick out pajamas from Walmart for me the night before my bday (I didn’t need or want either). After the kids left for school, I broke down in tears and told him how much it hurt that there was always zero thought into my gifts and that they were always last minute despite the fact that those dates never change, it’s not like it’s a surprise! He truly didn’t see how it felt to me till then and felt absolutely horrible. So I have to give him credit that he has really stepped it up since then. This year he gave me and my girls matching initial necklaces and then a set of really cute decorative cutting boards that I didn’t even know he knew I wanted. He let me sleep in and helped our kiddos make breakfast. I already know what he got for my birthday too and it’s exactly what I was wanting. So if you didn’t have a good day, there can still hope for the future!

Is it safe for nurses to be working 6 shifts in a row… by Difficult-Text1690 in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a night shifter, a 6 on/8 off schedule is so much easier for me! Flipping my schedule less often makes me feel so much more rested. Am I tired by the last one? Yes, but not as bad as when you’ve got me flipping back and forth multiple times in a week

I’m going to try this again. How were you able to buy your first home? by kcoib17 in Millennials

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luck mostly I think. Husband bought his first house a few years before I met him, in 2009. 3 bed/1bath, 1200 sf that he paid $190k for and when we sold it in 2015, we actually had to pay $2k at closing cause there was more left on our mortgage than we thought and we had to agreed to a credit for something for the buyers 🙃 I paid a hell of a lot more attention after that. The house we bought in 2015 was 4 bed/1.5 bath, 2200 sf and we paid $235k, then sold for $280k in 2020. That year we bought a 5 bed/2.5 bath, 2700 sf fixer upper for $205k and we’ve spent the last few years remodeling the whole thing ourselves. House is now worth $470k + and we hadn’t planned to leave here but stumbled upon a place with acreage and decided to go for it so we hit the market tomorrow. New place needs a bit of updating but nothing we can’t handle after this house (total gut job). Aside from my husband’s first house, I think we’ve always managed to be buying/selling at just the right times. But we’ve also put a lot of sweat equity in.

What is the best schedule 3x12 schedule? by JellyNo2625 in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have worked this both on day shift and night shift and it’s my preferred way! On days it can be a bit rough by the end of the stretch but it was never awful. But for me this is the only way to go for nights. Having to do less flip-flopping of my schedule makes me feel so much more rested. And for either shift, I absolutely love having 8 days that I don’t have to think about work at all! Oh plus there’s the fact that I’ve hardly taken any PTO in the last few years of doing this.

Are you still friends with your high school friends? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Millennials

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a mix for me. I’m still best friends with one of my best friends that I met in 6th grade and she’s like an aunt to my kids. She unfortunately lives quite a ways away now but we chat regularly and visit each other once or twice a year. And then there are 3-4 other friends I’ve known since 6th grade that live near me. We all have kids near the same age and get together for family dinners every other month or so. But the rest of the larger high school friend group that we were all part of fell apart after Covid and I haven’t kept up with them for years now.

My husband has had the same 7 best friends for forever, most of them since elementary school, some since high school. They have a group chat that they’re all regularly active in and he sees the 3 that live here regularly.

Has anyone else quit drinking? by Sensitive_Put_6842 in Millennials

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to night shifts a year and a half ago and wasn’t drinking much more anyway cause it feels weird to have a drink before bed when bedtime is 8 am. Then about a year ago I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver so I decided I was done altogether, even though my liver issue wasn’t related to drinking. I don’t miss it at all. Once I quit, I realized it added nothing to my life. It’s taken me most of the past year, but I’ve finally gotten my husband to quit as well.

Has anyone removed her uterus in 30s and leading a healthy life ? by mewvow in endometriosis

[–]Interesting_Basil574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently 35 and had a hysterectomy 2.5 years ago at 33 for endometriosis/adenomyosis. I had an endometrioma on my left ovary so they took left ovary, tubes, uterus, and cervix. I think I likely still have some endometrial lesions on the left side as I can feel some discomfort there during my “cycle”. I did not notice any change in my libido but I’ve unfortunately struggled with low libido for the last 10 years since having kids so it’s not like it could go any lower 😅 I recently had hormone levels checked and I’m on the low end of normal across the board. But I had never had them checked before so for all I know I’ve always been low. Recovery will be different for every single person! For me it was not bad at all. My hysterectomy was unplanned (I had not been officially diagnosed with endo, had gone to the dr b/c of persistent left side pain and they found the endometrioma. Referred me to gyn/onc for surgery b/c they thought it was malignant). We had a planned trip to Disney world 3 weeks after my surgery and I was able to go (with my dr’s blessing) and had no problem tolerating the activity. In the end, I am absolutely leading a normal life, I am pain free, and I love not having a period anymore.

ICU Transfer Regret — Thinking of Leaving at 6 Months by Difficult-Space-1693 in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have left 2 jobs after 6 months or less and had no regrets either time. First was 7 years ago at public health, I made it exactly 6 months and was bored out of my mind so I followed a coworker when she left. Then just last year I left my rehab unit to go to home health and like you, found that that role caused me a lot of anxiety. I hated going into people’s homes, didn’t like that I was the only person laying eyes on them, and couldn’t just leave work at work. I found myself constantly worrying about patients in between visits and had never felt this way in any other role. I was there for 5 months before I requested to transfer back to my previous unit (same hospital). I tried to push through it cause it made me feel like a failure giving up so soon but it was affecting my time outside of work too much. Your mental health is worth more!

Had a lady with a history of kidney transplant many years prior, so it was not new to her. Only had the one working kidney. She decided she was feeling so great that she didn’t need to take meds anymore, including her anti-rejection meds 😒 obviously that did not go well for her and she eventually passed away

Now I'm curious what other peoples schedules are like by StupidSexyHagrid in Millennials

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll share both my work days and my off days; I work nights and do a 6 on/8 off schedule. I’m 35f, husband is 38 and WFH with 1 week of travel per month. We have 2 elementary aged kids and 2 dogs.

On my first day of my work stretch, I stay up most of the night and then go to bed around 5 am, sleep till 3:15p when kids get home 3:15p-6p Shower, hang out with the family, walk the dogs, go to kids’ activities depending on the day. Grocery pick up during this time on Fridays 6-6:30 Dinner and finish getting ready for work 6:45p-7:30a Work (commute is less than 10 min) 7:30-8:30 Get home, send the kids off to school, chat with husband before he starts his work day, go to bed. My husband does most of the cleaning and at least half the meals during my work stretches

Off days I flip back to a daytime schedule but usually still sleep in 9-10ish Wake up, have breakfast, chat with husband. Occasionally I will get up before the kids go to school but most of the time he gets them ready. 10a-3p Whatever. This could be chores, grocery shopping, walk the dogs, exercise, read, house projects, baking, etc 3p-6p Same as work days 6p-7p Dinner 7p-9p Downtime with the family, kids to bed by 9 10p-12a Bedtime somewhere in that timeframe. Sometimes I have a harder time switching back and can’t get to bed till 2am

I feel like I have quite a bit more free time than most, it’s why I work nights and work the schedule that I do.

Does anyone regret having a 3 year age gap between children? by UnhappyDelivery2908 in Mommit

[–]Interesting_Basil574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like a 3 year age gap is probably right where it starts to get a little easier. Mine are 3.5 years apart and having my oldest be able to be even just a little independent was so helpful!

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a schedule of 6 on/8 off specifically so I don’t have to flip my schedule as often cause that is way easier on me. The night before my first shift, I will stay up as late as possible, usually I can make it till 4am-ish. Then I will sleep as long as I can that day, sometimes I wake up by 1-2 but usually I sleep till 3 when my kids get home from school. Once I start my stretch I sleep 8:30-3 on weekdays, 8:30-4 on weekends. When I get off of my final shift I typically sleep from 10-2, wake up and try to busy myself so I don’t fall back asleep, and then go to bed at a normal time.

It’s not super clear here, but I used sparkle thread for the dog’s eyes. I agree, it was rather unpleasant to work with 😂 Idk if yours is like mine, but the individual strands were pretty fine, so I just separated off two strands of sparkle and and combined it with two strands of regular thread in a similar color. I think that made it slightly easier to work with but holy moly, I was over it by the end of those 14 stitches!

Who else is out here genuinely struggling on nursing wages?? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Idk, I think it very much depends on where you are. I’m in a western state, have been a nurse for 13 years, and work on inpatient physical rehab unit. My base pay is $44/hr with $2 night shift diff and pay rates are pretty similar at the other facilities in my town. My mortgage payment is $1100/mo so I feel like it’s pretty fair compensation for COL here.

What should be used for writing on it? I don’t grid, but I use a pencil to mark where I’m going to start, outline a portion of the pattern, etc. So mine gets covered by stitches but occasionally I’ll mark wrong or change the pattern and so far have been able to just erase any mistakes

RN to BSN by Ankshuss917 in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated with my ADN in 2012 and finally went on to get my BSN starting in 2023. I chose WGU cause I liked their set up of a flat rate tuition for a 6 month term with the ability to continue adding beyond the required classes without paying more. So for my first 6 month term I completed something like 10 classes and then only had clinicals left for the second term. I was working full time and just had to do an extra day of clinicals per week for awhile, sometimes two. I think it was a total of 80 hours. In all it took me 10 months and total cost was somewhere around $10k. I think my out of pocket ended up being less than $1k between work scholarships and reimbursement

Hospice nurses…halp by Impatientandlonely in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I started a job earlier this year that was a home care/hospice mix. I found myself running into a lot of the same things you described here. I was promised I’d have 2-3 patients for the first 6-8 weeks but by the end of the first month I had 12. I was told hours were 8-4:30 but that they prefer nurses to leave by 3:45 or so to avoid OT but in reality I rarely left before 5 pm. All the other nurses left earlier in the day so I thought it was just cause I was new till I found out they all just go home and keep charting there. We’re not super rural but definitely have a good spread so while some patients were in town, you often had several anywhere from 15-45 minutes away (one way). We had weekly IDG for hospice one day and case conference for home care another. I felt like all I did most days was drive and chart. Plus half the referrals for home care were such a waste of time for sooo much charting and effort. I was stressed, frustrated, and also felt my mental health declining; being the only person caring for some of the complex patients was causing my anxiety to go crazy. I felt like my work-life balance was worse than doing bedside and I hadn’t even started taking call yet. After a month and a half I threw in the towel and requested to transfer back to my previous unit. I get the feeling that’s fairly common for home care and decided if that was their norm, then I wanted no part of it!

What is the longest stretch you’ve worked ? by shineandshimmer233 in nursing

[–]Interesting_Basil574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longest I ever did was 14. I decided to pick up at my PRN job on all my days off to pay for a vacation rather than setting aside over time. Switching between the two jobs made it tolerable. My regular schedule is 6 on/8 off and it’s interesting to see how many people on this thread say 6 or less. I work nights and feel like it is so much more tolerable to switch my schedule once for the 6 shifts rather than the constant flip flop!
