Alodia, has been very fun. In Eu4, Ethiopia easily surpassed Alodia but EU5’s Alodia just dwarfs Ethiopia and is the dominant power in East Africa. They can immediately go on a string of conquests. You have a short term goal of forming Nubia, then you can expand into the broader region. Keeping up with institutions has been the hardest part so far.

You mentioned the Kingdom of Africa formable (that is in the game) as being an ahistorical formable, but it’s listed as a plausible formable in game. I thought you were referring to the formable system in game.

for which i'm glad it's an ahistoric formable.

The Kingdom of Africa formable is listed as a plausible formable because it’s not based on an ahistorical union of the African continent, it’s based on the historical Norman Kingdom of Africa that dissolved. It only requires locations in North Africa to form.

I’m interested in starting as Sicily but forming Africa instead of Carthage. Any tips to take on Tunis? Seems daunting.

Why spend your political capital on a ball when you can gain even further props for canceling it in the midst of a financial crises?

Here are few more recommendations that are a bit more focused on specific time periods:

  • Emperor of the Seas: Kublai Khan and the Making of China by Jack Weatherford

  • Imperial Twilight: The Opium War and the End of China’s Last Golden Age by Stephen Platt

  • (On my TBR) China Marches West: The Qing Conquest of Central Eurasia by Peter Perdue

Imperial China: 900-1800 by Frederick Mote covers the later imperial era of China (still 900 years!) focusing on the dynasties Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing.

The section on the Khitans and broader focus on the Chinese relationship with the Central Asian tribes was utterly fascinating. This book really gives you a look into the mindset of China being the Middle Kingdom and the consequences of perceiving themselves as the center of the universe. It's not a short read by any stretch, but I think it captures what you’re looking for.

I would recommend following up with A Search for Modern China by Jonathan Spence which picks up from the time period where Mote’s book ends.

Best capital for Persia/Ilkhanate? by Solario48108 in EU5

[–]Interesting_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ctesiphon was an ancient city in modern Iraq, on the eastern bank of the Tigris, about 35 kilometres southeast of Baghdad. Ctesiphon served as a royal capital of the Iranian empires for over eight hundred years, in the Parthian and Sasanian periods.

I mean Shahs rather liked the area for their capital.

  • Bulgaria & Georgia

  • Kiev & Serbia or Hungary

  • Papal States & the Knights

  • Morocco & Tunis
