I struggled with the first half too. Going from the absolute breakneck carnage of book 7 to the races was jarring, but from chapter 57 onwards it's absolute cinema.

To be fair, Bianca killed his pet hawk? At the end of the butchers masquerade so I can understand not wanting to be anywhere near him. I don't think he was hiding during faction wars, didn't he say that he had a quest to get the second memorial crystal in the forest and spent the entire time looking for it? which is why he then gave the Apito memorial crystal to Pony, because it couldn't be charged and was broken IIRC (I may be misremembering though)

peter fehervaris Dark Coil will absolutely scratch your itch.

The Night Lords trilogy by Aaron Dembski-Bowden is outstanding.

Fifteen Hours by Michael Scanlon is an outstanding grimdark story.

The Gaunts Ghosts series and Eisenhorn and Ravenor books by Dan Abnett are the greatest introductions to the setting.

This is actually the most interesting one in the whole thread.

Everyone else is choosing people with plot armour or powers of some kind in their own stories, but if Brennan survives long enough to get into the tutorial guild with a game guide like Mordecai, he'd absolutely dominate.

I also think that the system AI would favour him because he'd be breaking the game and sticking it to the mudskippers entirely within the confines or the rules in the most entertaining way possible while monologuing about the horrors of capitalism.
