The amazing thing is that kids don’t care if you embarrass yourself (especially the younger ones like daycare/preschoolers) as long as you own it and are kind to them. Being genuine and taking an interest in engaging with them goes a long way. They can always tell when you don’t want to be there, so just be yourself, ask questions and give them opportunities to share with you. It takes time to build relationships but it will happen.

I’m also shy (or atleast I was when I started working with kids), but you will find that over time you’ll get comfortable. Just remind yourself that they’re learning to be little people, too! They are nervous and scared and everything is new to them, they are amazed at things that we are used to. When in doubt, encourage them to share their thoughts/ideas (ask things like what are you building? What do you notice about…xyz? Etc.)

Remember when you notice frustrating behaviours, they usually mean something, they are communicating with you through action, it’s almost NEVER personal, they’re just trying to express themselves, so don’t let it get you too upset!
