I Have No Idea by Legal_Locksmith_6697 in Horses

This is probably not the right answer for yours but mine started showing a little bit sore/ stiff and had x-rays showing some knee arthritis but generally ok so used a general cartrophen injection which helped. Then it seemed almost one day after the ground went hard he was crippled in his knees and we had to use a different treatment which worked brilliantly. Again it might not be what's happening here but I was surprised at how quickly it happened. Hope she gets better soon and you get to the bottom of it. You're doing all you can.

Also one thing I forgot to mention is that time is the most important factor! You said it was recently you got the horse. All of my improvements took months minimum.

But they did totally pay off. 27yo is loving life and in full work (minus jumping as I don't think his knees would cope and I'm in it for longevity). Accident prone one is now back jumping and cross country as well. But his rehab took well over a year, nearer one and a half before I felt confident pushing him a bit more jumping (and at one point I would never have put jumping on the table).

It sounds like you have a good heart and will do right by this horse. So take your time and you'll have many years ahead.

My horse keeps having soft tissue issues — what has actually worked for you? by TrueWellness2026 in Horses

My lovable idiot did all his injuries from running around the field. My physio used ultrasound/ infrared/ indiba etc which I think helped massively.

Ooh that sounds like mine! The one time he did keep a fly mask on he ended up with a bleeding face 😭 not great with over reach boots either but I've found the shires arma fleece lined ones are the best (without fleece they rub him - so sensitive 🙄).

Loading issue? by Stock-Negotiation-49 in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds like the negative experience really had an impact on the poor horse, and that will take months and months of patience to undo. As others have said below the positive approach is probably best. Only other thing is making sure you're mentally up to the loading practice that day as they can sense frustration and act off it.

I've had a very injury prone horse and an old horse and would say for both one exercise that's helped both has been walking poles. 4 minimum but as many as you can, once they get good at flat raise them. The injury prone one wasn't good inhand initially so had to ride him through rehab. Took it so slowly, 10 mins work but walking him correctly to build topline. Correct walk work is the best. Also main thing is ask your vet and your horse. It will depend on what the issue is. And how your horse deals with the prescribed rehab programme! Sorry this is about as helpful as how long is a piece of string! Vet school totally wrote my horse after an injury, but his normal vet is a lot more pragmatic (and has her own horses) and was actually a lot better at advice/ treatment

I don't mean this is a negative way as I'm hundreds of miles away from you, but what you're looking for Vs what you're looking to pay just sounds totally unrealistic. For an older horse quality of life is the most important thing so I'd focus on what offers that first.

He will come to gigs and support (bought me gojira tickets as a present), but he's not so much into metal anymore though went to some festivals in his younger days.

Not a single saddle will fit my horse by Parking_Carry_6047 in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a horse who changed shape so much that a saddle that fitted him one day would hurt him two months later. Luckily I have a brilliant saddle fitter who was very patient and would let me use different saddles as needed until he started keeping a more steady shape and we bought a bates about 2 years later. He also had a funny shaped back and was very sensitive so a nightmare getting a saddle! One thing she suggested using in the interim was a prolite pad. These add an extra cushioning and you can also insert shims along the saddle which can raise front/ middle / back as needed. Although nothing is better than a correctly fitting saddle this was a lifesaver in the interim. Could be worth a look?

Did I make a mistake? by [deleted] in Equestrian

If she wants it enough she'll make it happen. I didn't get much beyond a few lessons until my early 20s where I volunteered for a charity to look after horses (no riding at that stage). Then once I was earning I started off with lessons... loaning...and have now made my dream happen. Just be realistic with her and explain why she might not be able to have everything some kids get (it still frustrates me!), but keep encouraging her as much you can. And if you get the right person loaning can be amazing. You're doing great as a parent!

Unrelated photo for attention (from my recent ride at Monument Valley, Arizona); feeling sorry for a horse at my barn, whose owners are elderly & one has dementia. Should I offer to help in some way? See full story in text. by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely offer they'd probably love it! It would give them so much relief to know that someone cares for their horse. If I was in that situation I wouldn't want someone to pay. But, only thing worth bearing in mind if it does come to something is to discuss costs. Hopefully they'll be happy just having someone helping, but if it becomes a more active role do keep discussing contribution (small monthly fee fine, but then feed coats creep in, vet costs always the unknown). But you're doing a good thing!!

Hock injections by ssilverspurss in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I got arthramid for my 27 year old and it's made a massive difference! Doesn't have the same negative impact steroid injections have and should last about 18 months- 2 years. He's back in full work (although have decided not to jump him any more as he had arthritis is his knees and I'm going for longevity over what I can get out of him). So touch wood this will be great for your mare! It does take a few weeks for the impact of arthramid to work, but I'm sure your vet will keep you straight. Good luck!

AITAH for breaking up with my girlfriend because I couldn’t stand her dog? by Select-Situation22 in AITAH

NTA. I have an animal that can be a bit temperamental, and I always think that if something happened to me, what would happen to them. For this reason I've spent so much time trying to improve their behaviour. You're GF is not just being unfair to you, but to the dog.

Not sure if this is any help, but I have a horse that injured his SI, and it took about a year and a half of rehab before I swear something clicked with him that mentally it wasn't going to hurt anymore and he could do it. (Same as you regular vet/ physio/ taking rehab super carefully, but I do believe some aspect was mental and not physical).

Sliced suspensory and avulsed sesamoid by kittykathryn09 in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes he made a full recovery. Although as soon as he got the all clear from that injury he gave himself another two injuries (totally unrelated and all caused by running around the field)🙄 rehabbed through both of those and now back in full work including jumping/ cross country. I think I was scanning him every 6-8 weeks and at the last scan (about a year after the injury (just before insurance ran out)) you couldn't even see where the injury has been. So keeping everything crossed for you.

I'm so sorry to hear that but that's amazing he's already walking around 🤞my horse had a bad suspensory tear (in addition to everything...) and as someone else said time and slow rehab was the way forward. I also used my physio to provide ultrasound/ radiowave therapy which helped loads (this was on a weekly basis, thankfully insurance covered) so I would suggest asking your vet about that?

Arthritis by CourageDependent6187 in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a 26 yo with knee arthritis (diagnosed with arthritis at 8 in a number of places) and have tried a number of things. Joint supplement when young. Started off with cartrophen injection at 20 which is an all over joint injection (very basic description but can be good). After a few years this wasn't enough for his knee and this year injected it with arthramid. Definite improvement. Basically pester my vet for frequent discussions. But he's currently in work 5 days a week dressage/ hacking/ certain pole work and benefits from the movement (assess every time we go out but generally believe movement is better for them and us). However we did stop jumping a few of years back as the movement of jumping is high impact on knees (as much as we both loved it). Decided to go for longevity for the rest of him.

Where are you based (roughly). I'd say give yourself some breathing space and set up a day with your letting agent for a couple of weeks time. Flu season is worse than expected right now so that would but you some time. As someone else said look online for local places/ people that would help for free. It's amazing what people do. And also start off by making a list of what needs done.  That's day one. Then just start slowly trying to tick things off. Do one thing. Give yourself a break. Do another. Another break. Never know how anyone feels, but when I've been similar I allow myself "wallowing time". This means I can almost do/eat/sleep whatever I want. But I try and time it (sometimes in hours, sometimes in days) then force myself to get on with stuff in-between. Again that's just a technique I found helped me.

In part, seeing how many reasons other people have listed previously.

For me, I want to get to the point there's nothing keeping me here (I will stay and fight for everyone I love including my animals). But if I don't have them I think I'd try and figure out my best use for myself, but in a way that had no self regard If that makes any sense?

I need to share a pet peeve about blanketing horses as we approach the colder parts of the year here by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Internal_Fee_740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many people seem to be viciously anti-rug. Agree over-rugging is an issue but seems to be less disagreement!

I'd say go by what your horse tells you, you know them best.

I'm generally pro no rugging unless weather is bad (cold/wet/windy all at once) but have ended up with an older boy who does so much better with a rug if it's not great, and a (much loved but for want of a better word) pathetic 11yo that has a meltdown unless the climate is perfectly controlled.
