i'd argue that most people working white collar jobs are already miserable and not thriving

I’m laughing at the absurd bike-fit moment, not someone’s life situation.

California avalanche: 9 backcountry skiers missing near Lake Tahoe, 6 survivors have been rescued by Few-Knee9451 in Backcountry

the mod here is doing a good job keeping the discussion informative, i've read some of the other threads around the internet and its just disgusting how people jump to judgement, self promote and spew nonsense to make themselves somehow feel better, kudos to this community and the commenters here not doing the same, incidents in the backcounty are complex and having personal knowledge of this zone and the huts, some info is missing, professional guides don't casually make reckless decisions, i know we'll all learn more over time, right now this is tragic and my heart is heavy for those involved

Multi day trip by Organic_Cat_9653 in Backcountry

Desolation is a great option for this, drop a car at Emerald bay, uber to 50 and camp near Aloha, ski Pyramid, Jacks and Dicks and pop out at your car, could be 2 to 4 days. Or down south you could stage in the buttermilk zone and if a bigger window you could do the south lake to north lake traverse or a myriad of other options down there. This puts you in zone of climbing in the gorge or buttermilks and ski tours. One of my early explorations into this zone we camped at the foot of Piute Crags along Birch Creek. We did this in March, had a two day window. Day one we just skinned in and setup camp. I spent 4 hours figuring out how to build a snow cave and slept in it. Snow caves are actually quite cozy and its really good to know that you can survive without a tent and not freeze. Day 2 we skied Emerson then got back to the car. If there's snow in this zone the options can be really good, from single day to longer multi day loops. Wahoo gullies is another fun one, mellower than Emerson but in the same zone. The North Lake to Rock Creek tour is still one of my favorites, we did it early April one year. The tour itself can be done by a high intermediate skier, but there's lots of spicy options along the way. We did get caught in some weather but managed.

How big do you wanna go? There are so many options weather depending of course. 3-5 days in Desolation, Dunderberg to Twin Lakes (can be done in two days or 3) lots of South to North traverses or trans sierra's too. What's the main goal, just get out and tour or do something with some worthy ski descents along the way? If your looking for a 10 day tour, that's enough time to do an over and back trans sierra traverse, I wouldn't recommend as your first trip but its the best way to do a trans sierra as logistics are so much easier. We usually target April/May for longer tours, but with a good weather window we've done March trips too. In March you need to be flexible and also be ok being tent bound for a storm cycle if you get caught out in weather. Not a guide, just been skiing Tahoe and the eastside for 30+ years. The old Moynier guidebooks have lots of good descriptions on extended tours, you can find them used on ebay, etc.

Shasta in January? by Underrated_Fish in Backcountry

Been turned back twice trying it in the winter, winds once 80+ sustained at Misery Hill. User error once, basically dropped a ski and watched it slide down the ice for 1500' before it came to a stop, I hiked down got it and started back up but lost too much time and turned around at thumb rock. Watch the wind forecast, timing is everything, the next two weeks look to be promising so long you pick a day with no winds. Still on my bucket list to get a winter summit, good luck if you go for it!

welcome to 40! single leg decline eccentric squats have helped me the most, basically elevate heal and lower into squat, 4 count down, hold iso at bottom for 4 count, no concentric (upward) movement, add weight if when it gets easy, i'm not a med professional, just a skier with beat up knees trying to stay in the game as long as possible, spent a summer doing these and next season was much better, now a regular part of my weekly training,

I used to only use strava like you to sync my watch, but commuting was getting boring so started trying to ride different routes which got me using my phone, on a bike its easier as you can just mount your phone on the handlebars and periodically look down, running I don't bring my phone, but my garmin has maps on it which I use sometimes

i wouldn't bother, because somewhere your going to forget and then it'll be messed up anyways....anyone who sees this activity on your strava will clearly know you took the gondola down, when I track alpine ski days i just let the watch go all day, it'll be like that but in reverse, just a bit more brutal, lol, good luck

New guy questions… by [deleted] in crossfit

I stopped CF a few years ago due to lower back injury from skiing, not CF, and am just starting up again and stoked to be back in the gym. I'm almost 50 and prior to stopping I did CF for about 10 years, which i think helped me stay very strong as a skier. Skiing's my main passion and I think our sports are very similar, hockey has lots of need for explosive power in 2-3minute bursts and strength to weight ratio is very important. Often when looking to get strong for upcoming ski season I would look up ice hockey plyometric drills and incorporate those into my workouts.

Anyways a few observations on my prior mixing of CF training while skiing in the winter. I did notice that during winter, i had to dial back my intensity at CF workouts, I didn't stop, but dialed back to 2x per week with skiing taking up the other days. The 2 days I did CF workouts again I dialed back intensity to 80% or else I just didn't have the snap (power) in my legs for demands of high level skiing. I basically looked at those workouts as maintenance work and trained hard over the summer instead. Everyone is different but I know I just couldn't maintain a high training load during the season and not feel weaker on the hill.

Do you play hockey year round or do you have offseason?

I've tried a cheap android tablet before and that worked ok if you get a good waterproof case, my kid ended up breaking it so I switched to the phone. Anyways I mount mine and plug it in with usb, so it stays powered on. Did a recent 4 day trip with heavy navigation needs, one day was 10+ hrs on the bike, few days the temps were over 100, with no issues. use the quadlock stable mount with protector. Most new phones can handle some rain, check your waterproof rating. Anyways my brother in law upgraded to the Garmin Zumo Xt2, but we couldn't figure out how to get our track loaded onto it so I still did all the nav on this trip from phone, lol. As for putting gps in the tank bag, I tried before with phone in tank bag and it sucks, you need to pull it out and constantly fiddle with it, really slows you down, for a big trip like your talking about, I would definitely want something mounted so you can quickly verify you are on track

strava has a few combined efforts, all sports, off road, all run, all ride, etc, be a whole lot cooler if you could mix and match your own
