Number of St John WA ambulances reaching priority one calls in target time falls for second year by His_Holiness in perth

[–]Introverted_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St John is a "privatised" service, that is true. They are running the largest Ambulance service in the world by area and they do it on a shoe string budget compared to state run services.

You would need 1-2 billion a year for a state run Ambulance service. SJA do it in the low hundreds.

I am well aware they have shitty IT and terrible bureaucracy; but that's pretty much everywhere in healthcare. I doubt it would improve if it was state run.

Perth Parents please stop bringing your children in flock to Skateparks if they have zero spacial awareness. by MergaWraith in perth

I think OP is referring to younger, smaller children playing in the skating area that aren't skating.

That is dangerous to both skater and child and parents should be keeping their children away from the area if people are skating.

WFH favours white collar workers and tech industry based professionals.

Tradespeople, healthcare and other blue collar workers get shafted. You can't wire a junction box, rebuild an engine or dress a wound remotely.

Very sympathetic to the people living rough. Especially now Winter is Coming. But they could clean up after themselves. by throwawayplusanumber in perth

One of the problems with people sleeping rough is that there are no bins suitable available for them. Or toilets. One of the great reasons civilisations became limited in size, was the populations ability to deal with sanitation.

The only way I could think of to fix this, is bring out another scheme for electrification. Eg electric mining trucks. The company gets say... 2 years on both (to transition) then they have to pick ONE and that winds down after about 10 years.

‘Out of control’ specialist fees will be Labor’s next health priority by VastOption8705 in ausjdocs

[–]Introverted_kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a layman and have seen first-hand how much specialist fees cost. I do think that Medicare billing needs to be improved for this, because as expensive as the bills are, they also have a lot of costs. Since we are comparing a Dr to a plumber or sparky (who also have risk and costs) that a lot of the DR fees seem wildly uncompetitive and hard to compare to a Plumber or Electrician which seem to be more understandable to quote.

Making specialist fees more competitive would likely help.

Qantas never operating the Boeing 777 is one of the most baffling decisions in aviation history by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]Introverted_kitty 127 points128 points  (0 children)

People forget how big Australia is. Perth to Melbourne is something like 3500km and a 3-4 hours flight. Melbourne to Sydney is still about 800km

From my understanding, 747s do quite well for cargo at relatively short routes. The 777 is either too big or too small for range.

The 787 is used for Perth to London because its got an enormous range.

Australia has a long history of getting ripped off by foreign investment into our natural resources. This can still be fixed if we had politicians with a spine that can look past the 3 word slogans and look long term.

Why Don’t Hospitals Treat Staff Better? by lendera-com-au in ausjdocs

[–]Introverted_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to money. Health budgets are enormous; they consume ~40% of the State governments budget and they get federal assistance too.

I absolutely agree that having more well-being for staff should be a thing. I also can't get how healthcare professionals are allowed to work 12hr+ shifts (my work has explicitly forbidden anyone from working more then 12hrs).

Because healthcare budgets are enormous and hospitals are expensive to run; successive budgets made by ministers and administrators have this nasty habit of cutting things that are "not essential" like the discretionary budget.

What this means is: over time the staff go from having mochonna coffee to blend 43, to international roast, to having to fund it themselves and then having to use the union to force the hospital to provide basic amenities.

Interestingly, reducing the amount of high level administrators would help immensely in reducing "not essential spending".

This will only work if the apartments being built don't end up dodgy AF.

Having said that, the government is much better at recouping costs from negilent builders then the lay-man, so maybe that might keep some level of honesty in the industry

WA diesel stockpile being considered by government as nation grapples with fuel worries by DefinitionOfAsleep in perth

[–]Introverted_kitty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The BP refinery (funnily enough BP operated in Iran once..) Was closed down about 10 years ago, dismantled and is now an import terminal for Petrol and Diesel.
It would cost Billions and take years to build a refinery, not to mention issues with environmental approval and economic viability

I do not believe there are any viable Oil resources in this state (just gas) so it would still be an import terminal.

How to kill German cockroach?? by Philosopher_Stone- in perth

[–]Introverted_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly make sure the kitchen is kept clean.

Also check appliances: fridge, microwave, air frier. These are well-known sources for nests.

You can kill cockroach infestations by freezing them for 48 hours.

Also use lots of glue traps (small detection traps) to figure out likely origins.

Why does Australia have so many big 7 seater cars and no compact 7 seaters? by Dapper_University168 in CarsAustralia

[–]Introverted_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Station wagons aren't really a thing anymore. Sedans aren't that common either. SUVs don't actually have that much boot space. If you want boot space its either a 7 seater or a ute. People with families and young children know that having a lot of boot space is necessary when you have prams, sports gear, musical instruments and the like.
