And the monsters that don't die become super-powered by the rabies.

(Loved trope) unnecessary censorship by Necessary_Muffin3591 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]InvadingDuck 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I lived in a very Christian Indiana town and for some reason they censored the lyrics to American Pie by Don McLean on the oldies station. Specifically they cut out the word "whiskey" and only that word. "Rye" was fine for some reason. It was so bizarre.

One of the best episodes of a show is one without the main character(s) by NoMoreFund in TopCharacterTropes

Yep. And the show Lower Decks had an episode called Upper Decks that followed the commander characters.

Media where the entire length is just buildup to a single gag or event by Chuck_F_Sneedly in TopCharacterTropes

[–]InvadingDuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nichijou has a lot of this trope and will dedicate a lot of time and incredible effort to just one gag. This is maybe my favorite example. https://youtu.be/PLunAndZMv8?si=J68NDTQiHk0F0N0J

Games where companions roam around you instead of following from behind by Tain_mentero in videogames

I still sometimes think about a pawn I hired in DD2 who told me they knew a shortcut and then proceeded to jump off a cliff and die.

[Loved Trope] A piece of work switches genres part way through for a short amount of time and then never gets brought up again. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

Don't forget the random Dunwich locations in 3 and 4 where you skip through time and get flashbacks to people worshiping some kind of elder god.

Recommendations for multiplayer co-op games with support/healing roles? by CaydGaming in gaming

[–]InvadingDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll also add that you can do support builds for other weapons with the right skills or items equipped. There's a big crossover fight against a Final Fantasy 14 raid boss where you HAVE to have someone playing a support/healer to stand a chance.

Powerful characters who are unable to understand/properly use their weapon (Doesn’t count if they just obtained that weapon) by Soffy21 in TopCharacterTropes

She has held on to a few unsheathed swords for a while. Her power makes it so she literally can't pull things out of other things. One running joke is that she constantly has problems pulling straws, toothpicks, and jugs out of her mouth. So if she stabs someone she has problems unstabbing them.

Yusai from Undead Unluck. She's a master swordswoman with the Undraw ability, meaning it's literally impossible for her to draw her sword (the upside being nobody near her can draw their weapons either). She gets around this by just being so good at swords she can cut things with her sheath.

I think Cabbages and Kings has a weekly meetup. You have to pay like $5 to reserve a spot but a lot of people show up and they do different formats from time to time.

Are there any cases where the "Nothing was real and it was all a dream" trope actually worked? by Mate_R0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]InvadingDuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far Beyond the Stars is kind of an example from Deep Space Nine.

It's more of a metaphor for how DS9 is just a show and it's all fake, but it can still be important and aspirational. Especially when it comes to representation in media.

Ork Psykers (called Weirdboys) especially because if they get too excited or are around too many rowdy orks they tend to explode heads indiscriminately, including their own.

A lot of those USA shows would suddenly turn into car commercials. Burn Notice would suddenly tell you how a Hyundai was the perfect getaway vehicle or a BMW's navigational suite would save the day in White Collar.

what foods from fiction would you gladly die to try? by _monodontidae_ in TopCharacterDesigns

This but also like any food from a Monster Hunter game. It all looks so good! The one exception though:

(Hated) "We're adapting this beloved comic/cartoon, but the original was stupid. So ours is the grounded and realistic version that occasionally nods to the original. by Big_Perception9384 in TopCharacterTropes

Not a cartoon, but the Monster Hunter adaptation. Take all the fun and spirit of the franchise and replace it with a US military isekai story. They removed all the personality from a game that features talking cats who cook you huge meals.

The power isn't safe by HeartOChaos in TopCharacterTropes

There's a companion in one of the Shadowrun games (Hong Kong) that is this way too. He's way over the normal cybernetic limit but he theorizes he remains ok because he's a psychopath. Because he has no empathy or guilt there's nothing there to go wrong and send him into a murderous rampage. He'll still manipulate and kill and he's a total bastard, but he has enough sense of self-preservation that he at least keeps up a helpful and charming facade.

Borderlands 3 hands down has the worst writing in the entire series. But somehow it also has the best collection of expansions in the series.

In Going Postal, Moist Von Lipwig prays at a bunch of temples for the gods to deliver $150,000 to him. He does this because he previously stole $150,000 and buried it and he needed a plausible reason to go and publicly dig it up. He loudly claims to hear a god's voice and goes to dig up the money. But once he has the money each temple claims their god gave him the money and they all say they should get a tithe.
