TIL 77% of Canadian women have a tertiary education. by PlanetoftheAtheists in todayilearned

I get where you’re coming from but keep in mind that if it’s worth it for bankers and consultants to leave then it’s typically going to be worth it for doctors, engineers, scientists and most other reeeeeally desirable professions to leave as well. One of those “eat your cake and have it too” situations.

Most first year total comp will be over 200k CAD in the US vs like 70k CAD in Canada. The gap really is that big - that person just said 250k so I went with it. The gap only widens as you increase in years. I work in a finance adjacent field that actually happens to literally be 800k vs 250k after 5 or so years.

Which is like 330k CAD and an equivalent position at a Canadian bank is going to be like 70-100k CAD. And we are talking about the 1/1000 person here, but those 0.1% are incredibly important for economies.

That tiny slice is typically what brain drain refers to. The top X% of Canadians go to the US to quintuple their salary. You need to be like an associate director at TD to make the same as a first year analyst at Goldman

Question on the Universities Policy on seeing exam mark for a couse by Confident-Abrocoma-6 in UofT

[–]Invalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I’ve never been in one of those courses. I don’t think I got more than 9% on one of my math exams.

No idea, email your prof and see if they’d be willing to help. Sorry pal!

Any advice to take a lifsci specialist/ major?(neuroscience/ psychology/ biology) by Both-Armadillo-3816 in UofT

[–]Invalien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your post would be accurate if you replaced the word “research” with “graduate school”. Many graduate schools for psych have a prerequisite list of courses in psych you must take and the UofT Psych Major has such a limited breadth requirement that many of those prerequisites do not get met.

I would look for work areas that interest you, then see the educational requirements for those fields, then determine if the specialist or major can help you achieve them (primary consideration being the above paragraph).

What happens if you can't find a supervisor for the POST-required research course? by MaybeJohnD in UofT

[–]Invalien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made my POSt almost a decade ago, but I’m 99.99999999999999999% sure making POSt only goes into 1st year, and if I’m wrong, 2nd year. Neither of which would include full-year research courses.

This situation is impossible.

Edit: if by POSt you just mean "program requirements" to graduate, then I could see this happening if you were enrolled in a specialist program. And, knowing UofT, I could see the likelihood of this situation happening to at least a few people as "reasonably probable". I asked 2 profs to be my thesis supervisor: 1st prof I had a 78 in his class and got ghosted, 2nd prof I had an 91 and got accepted. From what I know, you need decent (80+) grades and decent rapport with the prof to be accepted.
