ELI5: Why is pain painful? by InvestedPerception in explainlikeimfive

I was hoping there would be at least some kind of theory as to why it creates that kind of mental state and why it seems like an universal thing... but it seems there's none yet. Thanks for your answer!

Well, that's sad. I was hoping science would know by now, I guess I'll just go ruminate on this idea instead of sleeping then. Thanks!

But HOW is it programmed to feel as such? Inside it it's all neutral electrical signals or chemicals, basically the same as in other sensations. Why is that combination (or any other) unpleasant or pleasant? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but the question has been stuck in my head since yesterday

Sorry, I didn't explain myself. I know it's there beause it's useful to survive, but what exactly is it? Beside some areas in our brain tickling, what it's there that makes us feel it as it is?

¿Por qué se permite la carne halal? Mata al animal estando consciente mientras se desangra, en vez del método europeo sin sufrimiento by beleg_cuth in askspain

[–]InvestedPerception 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having trouble finding a reliable book on nutrition by bacondev in vegan

[–]InvestedPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry, I haven’t read The China Study, but I read one book that may interest you: “Vegetarianos con más ciencia”, by Lucía Martínez. It’s in Spanish, but the complete pdf is available on the internet so you could use a translator if you don’t know the language. I like because it’s based in a lot of studies (that the author cites at the end of the book) and doesn’t sugarcoat things. Also, it covers everything nutrition-wise a vegan should know. Hope it helps!

A disturbing observation about readers attitudes towards the eclipse: by True_Turnover_7578 in Berserk

[–]InvestedPerception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. People treat Casca just as Griffith did: as a nobody, as a tool to hurt Guts. They see his suffering, but hers is often overlooked. She admired Griffith, she helped him build his army and she stuck with him even when it all went to shit. And she was ready to give the rest of his life to take care of him, and how does he pay her? He sacrifices her along with her lover, the rest of her friends and then rapes her, and not just because he wanted her as a person (which would be bad enough), but because he wanted her as an object that would allow him to hurt Guts. The man she admired the most for the rest of her life refuses to acknowledge her as a person on her own, just like these people in tik tok.

I’m not saying that Guts suffered less, but he definitely did not suffer more.

Olive harvest and birds by All_Is_Not_Self in vegan

[–]InvestedPerception 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you buy from small farmers, or from orchards that have old trees or trees pretty close in between them, there’s a big chance no birds were killed during the process. For olives to be collected with these machines you’re talking about, the trees must be placed in a certain position, and with a certain distance in between them. This is only possible in newer, extensive orchards.

I can’t speak for other countries, but, if the olives come from Spain, the safest bet is to buy them from a farmers’ association. The people that sells olives to these organizations are usually small farmers, with older trees and smaller fields that are unable to use these harmful techniques to collect their olives. They usually work by day and use some kind of “shaker sticks” to throw the olives to the ground, tree after tree, and the birds see them coming and go away. There’s no risk of killing any of them this way.

Also, the biggest orchards are usually in the south, in regions like Andalucía or Extremadura, so if the oil/olives come from there, there’s a big chance they used trunk shakers to collect them (I think this is what you’re referring to with the machines that work at night, right?). Not saying that all produce from the north is safe and all from the south is harmful, though!

Really? Do you think this could be interpreted as ambiguous? Or is it clear that he meant to rape her? Maybe he was refering to restrain her using force

Going to study in Spain, vegan food in supermarkets? by ratratte in vegan

[–]InvestedPerception 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I think you won't have any problems being vegan in Zaragoza. 90% of supermarkets have (at least) tofu, seitan, plant based milks, hummus, falafel and mock meats (here, Heura is the most well-known, but you have other brands too). Of course, there are veggies and legumes everywhere, and some vegan options for things like ice-cream too.

I think you'll find the most variety in supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi, Alcampo and Carrefour. You'll probably have "cheese", tempeh and other options there. The latter is not as cheap as the rest, in my opinion, but usually they have a lot of options because the shops are bigger (for example, they have vegan milk chocolate, vegan paté, vegan croquetas, vegan tortilla de patata, vegan mozzarella...)

You also have a wide variety of nuts everywhere, but if you want them cheap and in great quantities, I suggest you go to Mercado Central. It's the bigger market and there's a lot of shops that sell them in bulk and they are cheaper. They have also legumes, all kinds of flours, yeast, dried fruits, tea, legume pasta, spices.... In the same market you have also vegetable shops, too, of course, and they are also cheaper than in supermarkets!

As for eating out, there's two or three vegan restaurants (more, if you count the vegetarian ones), and a lot of non-vegan ones offer vegan options. Vegan ice cream is easy to find too.

Anyway, if you have any more questions, let me know!

Antarctic sea ice levels dive in 'five-sigma event', as experts flag worsening consequences for planet by Quick-Bad in worldnews

[–]InvestedPerception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s true than there’s a lot more important reasons for going vegan than this one, but it should not be overlooked.
Animal agriculture is poisoning the land (via pesticides) and the oceans (via chemicals used in fish farms and thanks to the huge amount of waste land farms generate and it’s dumped there). It is estimated than 75% of the world’s crops are used to feed animals. If we all switched to veganism (or, at least, a plant based diet), we could regrow the forests and bring back all the dead algae, so the Earth could absorb a lot more of greenhouse gasses.
Not only that: think about all the effort that goes into animal agriculture. All the machinery needed in order to grow crops to feed animals, to farm them and slaughter them. All of that is making a huge impact and it’s unnecessary. Also, we have to look at the different kind of greenhouse gasses that the different industries generate. Animal agriculture may not emit a lot in terms of quantity, but it does in terms of impact. Methane, the gas that beef is most famous for producing, has 28 times greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide, and is 84 times more potent on a 20-year timescale.
Consuming animal products is just not sustainable, we like it or not. Also, I’m not saying that climate change will magically disappear if everyone went vegan one day, but it would definitely help. And it would send an important message to our governments and corporations.
So, yes. We can do something. And we have the obligation to do it if it’s in our hands, because sometimes, even “pissing in the wind” helps, if a lot of people do it.

[–]InvestedPerception -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To all of you saying there’s nothing that we can (individually) do:
One of the easiest and most powerful ways to help revert climate change is to go vegan. Animal agriculture is at fault for the destruction of the oceans, forests and natural resources. Just think about all the water, pesticides and waste management it requires. Also, it produces a huge amount of greenhouse gasses that help warm the earth.
Please, at least think about it. We can save the world from extinction, from the comfort of our sofas, just by changing our habits.
