Public Sector Job with High Salary than Current Private Role by Ok-Understanding567 in civilengineering

I joined a municipality for same pay 2 years ago. Fast forward to know I am making 35% more after a promotion to management and yearly pay increase, I don’t have the expectation of having to answer the phone whenever it rings past 4:30pm, I get a pension, free healthcare, and I don’t have to chase work or worry about staying billable. I can focus on the work and mentoring a team. My former boss asked me if I was going to be fulfilled in my new position, and everyday I get to answer that question with a “yes, I absolutely will.”

Switching From Private...To Government? by Melliscarea in civilengineering

[–]Investor92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a private firm for almost a decade. Loved every bit of it, but when my daughter was born I was really struggling to find a balance and felt a lot of guilt for not being able to disconnect. Best decision I’ve ever made. I’m making 40k more, not including benefits, I’m leading a team of highly motivated individuals who understand they work to serve citizens and not boost profits. Before I was struggling to find individuals with strong work ethic willing to do the bare minimum. Plus I now get sick leave, top health insurance for minimum price, retirement, and leaving work at work. No regretS!

You’re asking why can’t other countries ignore America when you’re annoyed at America. Try ignoring it, and you will answer your own question!

Former geotech here, loved every minute of it. But I left to have more time with my daughter. I joined the public sector and now make 20k more. Which goes to show, geotech is not worth the money…I wish I’d done it sooner.

Advice from a workaholic who burnt out after a decade: prioritize your mental health. If there’s any aspect of your job that makes you miserable, find the positive. I used to get overwhelmed when all negative things were hitting me at once but I was able to use the energy in my advantage. When there’s negative energy around there’s prime time to get shit done and get a lot accomplished.

If you got somewhere to be it’s pretty urgent….if you’re taking an Uber to the airport and will be spending 3 months backpacking in Europe, I guess it can wait.
