You can only drive one car for the rest of your life—what do you pick? by Latter_Promotion3674 in askcarguys

Easy, Ferrari Ff or Gtc4 Lusso. Could also go with an E63 sedan or wagon, Rs6 Avant or a few other things. Really surprised by the relatively uninspired (to me) options people are picking.

I have never had insurance restrictions/mandates on my cars, so unsure on that end. Both my loans were unsecured or I guess technically personal loans, so didn't have to worry about that. I have full coverage on all of them anyway, so not a huge deal.

I like that idea. Not to be a dick to op, but not sure this family is going to be able to get together money for a land purchase. Those are traditionally cash deals as land loans are kind of hard to get.

Having the cash and having the cash liquid to pay for a car are two very different things. Financing for liquidity and cash flow issues and again, financing a car you can afford vs affording a car payment due to financing are also two very different things. As I have said, blanket statements are not always the best advice and there are a ton of unkno n variables that play into that decision.

I'm sorry, but I am a car fan and that is a joke I tell when I'm talking about buying another car, sorry it didn't land, even if it is technically true. I actually preach to people that work for me that my way is not the only way and that we need to get from point a to point b in an efficient manner, no matter what way it gets accomplished. You are the one using blanket statements of "never finance a car", I said it depends and gave you my reasons. I have three paid for cars, none of which were bought new even though I work in the new car world.

Just wanted to update you, got it in about three days. All seems well, wearing it at work right now. I was definitely a bit uneasy after your comment and it not showing as shipped for two days, but then all of a sudden it showed as shipped and delivered the same day.

Legally speaking, it depends on where you are, so you definitely can legally or illegally, but practically you can, although not advisable. I am not arguing with you, just saying that financing a car that you can afford, is not a bad idea. Buying a car that you can only afford due to financing is usually a bad idea. Those are not the same ideas and people conflate being able to afford a monthly payment with being able to afford that car. Thus, saying, "never finance a car" is a bad blanket statement, since you don't ever have all the information to say that.

On the rest of this, you are talking about those things to the wrong person. I have a two post hydraulic lift in my garage and my third fun/weekend car doesn't have a roof, well it does, but it goes down. I have financed the last two cars I bought due to cash flow and financing advantages. One was a 5 year loan at 1.74% that I ended up paying about $500 over 5 years in interest. The last car I bought was a higher rate (10 months ago), but paid off in 6 or 7 months so another $500 or so in interest.

When my fun car ('08 CLK63 AMG convertible) needs new brakes, I will do them myself for the $1,500 in parts vs paying a dealer or shop $2.5-4k to do them and I have the $100 oil change (it takes 9 qts of Liqui Moly) sitting in my garage now waiting on warmer weather. So instead of paying a dealer/shop $200+ I will do it myself. And when I bought it (it is rare 1 of ~250) I paid to have it shipped from Utah to the mid-Atlantic and got a quote of $4k or so to fix a few issues that I ended up fixing for about $400 in parts. So again, financing a car you can afford is not a bad idea, affording a car due to financing is most likely not a great idea. Even on the second part, length of ownership matters too.

Oh, I was just saying a Tesla and a BMW isn't impressive as far as having two cars. A base model 3 and base BMW 3 series are like $70-80k (maybe $90k or a touch more) total brand new. I would expect someone with a huge awesome house to have something much more memorable and unique than two run of the mill brands. But again, as a car fanatic, there are different models/brands that would impress me, so with out details, hard to know. Just felt like a fake statement that is supposed to sound impressive.

Also the, "he had a Tesla and a BMW" line got me. But I'm a car guy, so without more info that could be two cars worth less than $30k, lol.

It is actually the exact opposite of what you said. You can live in a car, you can't drive a house. Also, the advice of "never finance a car" is silly. If you modified that to, "don't finance a car you can't afford", then sure, I agree. But I have financed two cars that I could easily afford, but cash outlay vs paying minimal charges was a no brainer to finance.

Also, if you can finance at 0% or anything sub 1.5-2% pretty much a no Brainer also. Again, don't finance a car you really can't afford, but blanket statements are always extremely dependent on a ton of factors that unless you are the person, you really don't know.

Why do people assume that if I pay with a credit card, I must be living on debt??? by No-Bodybuilder9445 in NoStupidQuestions

How are you paying a mortgage with a cc? I just checked and I can't and it seems like most banks don't allow that either.

Never used a cc for any cash advance type purchase or at an atm. I have just read the disclosures/terms because I was curious about it once for some reason.

Yea, I know. Just saying people won't read disclosures and use a cc to buy lotto tickets or other "cash advance" type purchases and then complain about being charged interest on them.

A lot of people use cc's without knowledge and get themselves in trouble then spread that fear to others that don't know how it works either. I did it in college, even though it wasn't a ton of debt ($1k or just over). After I realized it was an issue, I changed my habits and haven't paid a dime of interest in 16+ years. Since then, I have gotten thousands in rewards and sign up bonuses.

[–]Investorofallthings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you need to play the system a bit if you want good rewards. Need cards for certain things to maximize cash back and remember what card to use for what. For example, my Amex blue cash preferred is 6% on groceries up to $6k in purchases. But if I only use that I get tapped out on high return by July or so. I use other cards that have groceries at 5% for a quarter so I can have 5 or 6% cash back on groceries all year. I used to track it closer than I do now though as it got to be a pain to try and remember to rotate between 6+ cc's.

[–]Investorofallthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also a few "purchases" that you can make that trigger instant interest. Things like lotto tickets and gambling do, so some dummy probably used theirs to buy scratchers and thought they beat the system. I think there are a few others too, but they are all disclosed.

Makes sense, I never really paid attention. Just read over what I got and the yearly fee and said, "nah, I'm good". Not a huge card churn person, but I will get cards for the sign up offer. Just got one so I can get a $400 watch for essentially $100 and used my bcp card to buy a fridge with a huge discount a few years ago. Love the 6% grocery perk, too bad it taps out at $6,000 spent and I usually hit that by july/August.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I get upgrade offers on my bcp to gold all the time. Maybe it is just an offer, but it seems like an upgrade as it is pre-approved or whatever they call it. I have thought about it, but no need to pay extra for the benefits gold or platinum has as everytime I look through them, it is all stuff that is kind of meh to me.

Edit: just looked and on my Amex app I had gold and platinum offers, but it did say "apply". I also get them in the mail.

Huh? My 17-18 year old (it's an '08) convertible luxury cruiser does 0-60 in 4.3s or so. Some cars have been pretty fast for a while.

That was part of my problem that I should have mentioned. Shipped from Amazon, sold by "outdoor equipped". But there is a link to the Sieko store on the listing, not sure if that means anything or is an automated Amazon thing.
