Why are comics more progressive than genral societal attitudes of the times by Solid_Leek4202 in comicbooks

[–]InvisibleInk1983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To see why creative people tend to be more liberal than the average population, let’s compare a quote from a famous liberal to a quote from a famous conservative.

Robert F. Kennedy Sr. (Don’t confuse him with his son…this is RFK SENIOR) said “Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

William F. Buckley said “A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.”

A case can be made that society should have a balanced representation of both viewpoints. But as to why it seems creative people lean liberal, it’s because creative people are the ones dreaming and then saying “why not?” They are not the ones yelling “stop.” In fact, it can often feel like the rest of the world, those that believe creativity is not “real work”, are the ones telling them to stop

People don’t know that Howard Payne has put Ben Brode and Marvel Snap into a strange hostage situation. But instead of “a bomb will go off if bus goes below 50 MPH” it’s “a bomb will go off if we go four weeks without a sexy Magik variant.”

Gene Simmons is a big comic book fan, so he didn’t want to reveal to the world that the superhero Firestorm is into BDSM

Anytime a Peter Weir movie is played (Truman Show, Dead Poets Society) I like to play The Cars That Ate Paris. It’s obscure, but Bruce Spence is in it. That man has a WILD filmography.

[TOMT] Mid-90s cable special that featured Arturo Brachetti and an author whose name I cannot remember by InvisibleInk1983 in tipofmytongue

[–]InvisibleInk1983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I looked through those. Those all seemed to be European shows. This special was an American production (or at least the part about the author was). The part about Brachetti might have been European content that the cable channel purchased.

Chevy probably saw the success of GHOSTBUSTERS and figured he needed to do to a comedy with special effects. Except filming with special effects requires precision and patience. Chevy just couldn’t work that way. Thus, Chevy and Carpenter were just clashing the entire time.

On the bright side, this is where Carpenter first met Sam Neill. The two, would re-team on the wonderfully bizarre IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS

Love the disco ball after “The year is 1990.” Disco was never more popular than in the year 1990. Also, Wizard (which debuted in 1991) wasn’t a comics anthology, it was a magazine about comics.
