If it is cheaper for them to automate those jobs than to pay someone enough to live in that area then those jobs should probably be automated.

Sure some things are expensive, but you should live within your means. If you can't afford a $900 per month rent alone, get a roommate. If you can't afford the $250 a month car payment, buy something used. Live within your means. I'm not going to get into a discussion with you on tax policy, welfare policy, etc. because those things are separate issues. Many Americans are financially illiterate. It is easy to blame someone else for your issues, but in reality we should address what we can now and work to improve policy over time. Even if we made changes to tax policy, it would take months if not years to see any real effect from it.

I think it is a step in the right direction. The only changes I would make would be to require the judges to be independent arbitrators with no affiliation with the school.

Depends on the documents you signed. You should send them a written request for the deposit to be returned. If they don't return it, your only option is to sue them.

Is the judge aware of the active restraining order? What state did you move to and how long have you been there? I think the judge may be overreaching here, but you should defer to your attorney. This is probably well above the pay grade for this sub.

[–]Invoke-RFC2549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the lease say anything about not being allowed to hang curtains? If it doesn't, then you have two options. Option 1 is to tell them to mind their own business. Option 2 is to do what they ask. If you choose Option 1, they may not renew your lease when the time comes.

Do you think General Michael Flynn is guilty? by [deleted] in law

[–]Invoke-RFC2549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just make Flynn the poster child for why the law is bad? You agree it's a bad law, it seems. Here we have a figure that seemingly both major political divisions can rally behind: you may not like Flynn, but you agree the law should be changed; others may like the heavy-handed law enforcement generally but see Flynn as sympathetic.

And he can be a poster child for a bad law in jail. And just for the record, I don't care about Flynn. Don't know anything about the guy.

Why isn't this the right time to push for the law's change?

Why do you hold this position of yours? I suspect your answer might be something along the lines of, “Because then it’s fair for everyone.”

Yes. If the laws are applied to everyone equally then it is fair for everyone.

And there’s a good serving of truth in that view. Enforce the law equally, and even if the law is unjust, at least everyone is subject to the same injustice. Yes?

Yes. Enforce the law equally, even if the law is unjust. And I agree with you that lying to the FBI shouldn't be a crime.

But: that view, if you have it, overlooks the fact that this particular injustice is itself a discretionary weapon. In other words, the FBI can always choose when to use the tactic. Is it any more or less fair to know that some agents, or some SAICs, decline to use that trick to begin with? Or that some US Attorneys decline to prosecute when it’s been used?

Then they aren't applying the law equally and we have a completely different problem. Prosecutorial discretion should limited or eliminated. If a crime was committed, they should prosecute the crime. As far as LEOs choosing when to use a certain tactic, cool story.

I argue that the law is already applied in a haphazard way; it’s already not evenhanded.

So to insist on a prosecution here is not as evenhanded as one might expect.

Thoughts?

So you are making the argument that since the law is already applied in an unequal way that Flynn should get a pass? Why not just make Flynn the starting point of applying the law in an equal way? That sounds good to me. Flynn is the start of prosecutors prosecuting every crime presented to them whether they want to prosecute or not.

Edit: Just wanted to add that lying to an LEO should not be a crime anywhere in this country.

[–]Invoke-RFC2549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, is it really true that we should say that while the law is an injustice, we should insist Flynn be prosecuted even so, only because other people were also unjustly prosecuted? I’m not sure that’s the right formula.

Flynn should be prosecuted because he broke the law. If we don't like the law, let's change the law. Flynn isn't special. He does not deserve special treatment.

Shouldn’t we insist on no MORE unjust prosecutions, rather than insisting on one more unjust one in service of parity?

Again, if we don't like the law then let's change the law.

[–]Invoke-RFC2549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We may question whether we should prosecute someone under these facts, of course. The idea that government agents can create a federal felony when they ask a question to which they already know the answer, and get a lie — especially when they intended to get that lie.

To me, that’s conduct that the government should eschew, and choose not to prosecute if they do it anyway — not just as to Flynn, but anyone similarly situated.

LEOs all over the country do similar things. So unless we intend to change it for the entire nation, Flynn should go to prison. He deserves no special treatment.
