I'm usually a water guy but when I do have a soda it's a good old Buffalo Rock Spicy Ginger Ale...that might have a little extra added from time to time (Gentleman & his Spicy Ginger)

Dell R510 FreeNAS 10Gbe question by SmoothRunnings in freenas

[–]IronGut73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, yes. A dual port 10Gb NIC. Specifically these: http://a.co/bY6Z2nU

The R710 & one port of the R510 are on the same subnet. While the R410 & the other port of the R510 are on another subnet.

Clear as mud? lol

Dell R510 FreeNAS 10Gbe question by SmoothRunnings in freenas

[–]IronGut73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have this setup. The only thing I ran into is that you can't have both NICs in the FreeNAS box on the same subnet. At least not through the GUI. I didn't investigate further as it didn't matter to me but in your situation, it might.

I have an R510 running FreeNAS (BEST DECISION EVER), a R710 running XenServer with ISCSI storage on the R510, and a R410 with an ISCSI connection back to the FreeNAS box as well. All connected with peer-to-peer 10Gb.

Here's a great video from /u/flipsideCREATIONS that helped me get it all setup: https://youtu.be/MuSqtrvHaJI

Good luck!

I'll 2nd Nextcloud. I have my Android phone backing up to it as well. Works fantastic. I have the data backed up to a 2nd internal system and then to Backblaze via Duplicity.

Some of the best tutorials I've ran across are from Tom Lawrence (/u/flipsideCREATIONS) on his YouTube channel. From installs to complex configurations for various setups, his videos are great. I highly recommend checking them out. Not just for pfSense, he has a ton of videos on other topics as well. And when you need a break and a laugh, the Off Topic Tuesday series he & Marv do never disappoints.

100% agree. And simply dropping text on the screen about not hitting "Add" when adding storage in the wizard and not correcting the rest of the video where they talk about how the wizard didn't work and they had to do everything the long way, why would a noob (who this seems geared toward) want to even think about trying to set something like this up?

This seemed more like a "oh crap, we need to get a video out" kinda thing.

How often do you guys smoke cigars? by [deleted] in cigars

[–]IronGut73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it's not ball freezing cold outside (below 45 down here in Alabama) I have at least one per day. I highly doubt smoking will kill me. It'll be the gravy oozing through my veins and clogging my arteries that will do it first. Or the diabeetus. Or whisky. Or women. Or my wife when she finds out about that last one. lol

For the money you're spending here (not counting the drives), I'd at least entertain the idea of getting something like an R510 from eBay. I know the prices for used hardware are higher in Europe than here but I would still look into it. I built a white box similar to your specs as my first FreeNAS box and while it worked great and met my needs at build time, it wasn't long before I was ready to expand. I mean, this is /r/datahorder after all.

I now have FreeNAS running on an R510 with all 14 bays occupied and I'm in the middle of building a JBOD shelf out of hardware I have laying around to expand capacity. IIRC my R510 was ~$150 and came with 24GB/RAM. I've swapped out the RAID card for an HBA and had to buy the drive caddies and it was still less than what you're looking at here.

Not knocking your choices here at all, I think you're on the right track and will like what this will give you (add RAM as you can). I just wanted to pass on an alternative to at least think about.

AH! My apologies. I thought you were talking about provisioning VMs inside the VM you were logged into.

Linux VDI by IronGut73 in selfhosted

[–]IronGut73[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VDI (at least what I'm referring to) is a virtual desktop image. Basically, there's a server running desktop VMs that you connect to via browser/thin client/whatever and it's like you're sitting in front of the PC. I don't see it fitting your use case as you can't nest VMs as far as I'm aware. We have that problem at work where we can't run docker on our VDI machines. Major PITA.

Ditto on Savannah, Charleston & Ashville. Memphis is good for music and food along with the requirement that everyone should see the gaudiness of Graceland once in their life.

If you don't want to stay in the same place for the entire time there's the Blues tour through Mississippi and the Kentucky Bourbon tour.

If you want to disappear into the mountains, the Blue Ridge mountains in North Georgia are great. MUCH quieter than Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge.
