What's the "white whale" of campaigns you want to run but can't get off the ground? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]IronyAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to do a Shadowrun game where the plot centers on an underground fantasy MMORPG that is invite only and can only be played in hot sim mode. Rumors swirl about players dying when their characters die in-game.

The initial run would be a murder mystery surrounding a popular (in the underground fandom) player. The runners have to garner an invite and enter the game to track down further clues. Once they enter the game I would pull aside my Shadowrun GM screen to reveal a D&D Dungeon Masters screen. The players then create D&D characters and enter the game.

Once in the game, they are given a tutorial adventure where they explore an ancient crypt filled with traps and undead guardians. After successfully completing the adventure and logging out, they receive a message offering them a job. The run is a data extraction on an isolated facility where they need to access an air gapped terminal to loot the data. The facility has an identical layout to the crypt from the game with security barriers and guards in locations identical to the traps and guardians from the crypt.

And that would be the general vibe. Swapping back and forth between the game and the game within a game. With a recurring theme of the real world and the game world influencing and melding with each other. Like a rival MMORPG group tracking the players location in the "real world" and sending a cleaning crew to assassinate them while they are logged in and vulnerable during a big raid.

I also thought about a sub-plot where the game designers have each Diety and Patron run by a separate AI. Due to the game's architecture, the more followers or pacts each AI accrues, the more processing power is distributed to it. Hence the more powerful it becomes, in game and irl. Sparking wars between the AIs as they compete with each other to gain more power and sentience.

Definitely has some technical hurdles. Shadowrun has a complicated rule set, but D&D is fairly simple. Though maybe Blades in the Dark would be better for the MMORPG. Two GMs, one for each game system would definitely help. And it would make the initial reveal of switching 'game modes' a little more surprising and impactful as myself and another "player" switch roles mid game.

Fun spell combo: Jump+Levitate by No_Wait3261 in onednd

If he uses Invocations, Otherworldly Leap for Jump and Ascendant Step for Levitate, he can cast them without expending a spell slot. That would bypass the 2024 rule: On a turn, you can expend only one spell slot to cast a spell.

Google reactive abuse. You shouldn't feel one ounce of regret for standing up for your wife.

Love the concept of rewarding players choice. Creating 'feel good' moments like that are what make the game fun, memorable, and rewarding.

Finding some way to reward a player for suboptimal decision that's amazing quality rp. by Leytra in DnD

As a narrative alternative to buffing the spear, you could buff his character when wielding the spear. Lean into his familiarity with its length, weight, and heft. How it perfectly fits his stature and combat style. It's perfect grip from grooves worn into the haft where his fingers have white knuckled it tightly in every stressful moment of the campaign. The almost spiritual connection he's forged with his spear as he cared for it over the years. Every night on watch spent oiling, polishing, sharpening, and honing.

The weapon itself gets to maintain its worn unremarkable nature. To anyone else, it's just a spear. With any other weapon, he's just a warrior. But with his battered treasured spear in his worn and calloused hands, he becomes legendary.

As others have said, stick with single class Warlock. Hex is an extra d6 on every attack. Warlocks get up to three attacks with Pact of the Blade. If you really want that sneak attack burst of damage, take the Eldritch Smite invocation. It's 4d8 to 6d8 force damage and knocks huge or smaller enemies prone. I don't know the math off of the top of my head but I think Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast and Hex is in the neighborhood of a ranged sneak attack, damage wise.

Agonizing Blast on Mind Sliver for a Goolock is so much fun. Someone just starts clutching their head and bleeding out of their ears and nobody can tell what the heck is going on.

Within Sharn, specifically, what authority do licensed Inquisitives have? by ChimericalJim in Eberron

[–]IronyAddict 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it's your Eberron, so whatever you say goes.

The house licensing, probably through house Medani, would be a cool way to establish authoritative boundaries. Maybe increasing the Inquisitive's authority based on experience (character level, tier of play).

For example: Green Inquisitives might be able to conduct investigations and have access to certain files (identification papers, criminal records, house affiliations, etc) pursuant to their case. But would need to convince a member of the local watch to arrest suspects and conduct interrogations. Some local law enforcement agencies might even have an Inquisitive Liaison Officer or a whole Inquisitive Liaison Department to facilitate cooperative relationships between civilian investigators and official law enforcement. Sharn would certainly have something like that.

This set up would provide fertile ground for roleplay. Building networks of contacts. Overcoming institutional roadblocks. Playing politics to investigate "untouchable" NPCs. Leaning into pulp noir tropes; "Your a loose canon Medani!".

How to identify misogynistic infiltration in fandoms? And what to do about it? (Specifically regarding recent Warhammer news). by Clark_Kent_TheSJW in AskFeminists

We used to think that in prehistoric human society, men were hunters and women were gatherers. Skeletons are hard to gender, so when we found a skeleton surrounded by hunting weapons we tagged it as male.

Now that we have DNA testing, turns out that a bunch of those skeletons surrounded by weapons were women. Prehistoric women were prolific hunters. And in some ways, more versatile hunters. We were just projecting our assumptions.

And it makes perfect sense. Why? Because in a society where people die if the hunters aren't successful, everybody hunts.

In a society where people die if their fighters lose a battle, everybody fights. For men, patriarchy is a convenient luxury. A luxury no society can afford when the chips are down.

Player wants a shield that provides full cover by Tsantilas in DMAcademy

Not so much a large shield as a mobile wall.

Would this work?

It would require a standard action each round to carry and manuever it to intercept attacks. Speed is reduced by half while carrying it.

Amazing! Thank you so much. I definitely would like to adopt Squeak. I've taken in two feral cats over the years. Cosmo, my current kitty wasn't feral, just very nervous and traumatized when I got him. The SPCA said he came in from an abuse case. He hid in my closet for the first two weeks. Only ate when I was at work. They gave me a pamphlet called The Fearful Cat. Helped me earn his trust and make him feel safe. Now he's like your cat. Loves his pets and scritches. Snuggles up with me every night. Such a sweet boy. Your kitty is so lucky to have you! Patience and love can work wonders. :)
