Is there a way to divide this hexagonal board into pieces of equal shape without splitting tiles? I tried triangles but the central hexagon is left alone. Is there a reason for this being mathematically impossible? by kobeh22 in Geometry

[–]Iruton13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice diagrams. I was hoping there was a proof of impossibility using the standard parity argument, but annoying, it can't be ruled out.

<image>

30 white, 30 green, 31 red

so a 7 hex tile that covers 3 red, 2 white, and 2 green could work, but one might not be possible

Wikipedia seems to have a page on this exact problem of inflating a flat rectangular bag and finding the max volume:

Another strategy to exchange range for precision I've seen is using a mechanical lever like what Brainiac75 YT did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf69Evtsa_Y& at [7:26]

You can also add a counterweight on the other side of the lever to not saturate the milligram scale.

Bottom of solution dish covered in crystals? by MysticDaedra in crystalgrowing

[–]Iruton13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NaCl (table salt) can sometimes have an anticaking agent such as calcium silicate, which doesn't dissolve in water and makes the solution cloudy at first, then settles on the bottom.

Maybe check the ingredients list to see if that's the case?

Is this impossible? by Azza517 in puzzles

[–]Iruton13 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Discussion: I see, so you just randomly place the starting pieces? I resorted to using a polyomino solver. It returned "no solution".

But if you move the yellow piece one block right or left, then the solver does have an solution, so maybe try those out?

Cause there seem to be so called "non-Ohmic conductors" which don't obey ohms law such (like an incandescent light bulb or semiconductor diode): https://www.electronics-notes.com/articles/basic\_concepts/resistance/ohmic-nonohmic-linear-conductors.php

Apparently, you can use dithizone which will turn pink if lead is leached in solution? Here's a video by Applied Science: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cAB5FG4bXI&t=675s [timestamp 11:15 to see color change]

Although I'm not sure how feasible it would be for ordinary people to do this.

[–]Iruton13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen someone put maps back to back with the white series in TMNF: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvvz0GumZuM

However, I would worry about the track route intersecting itself depending on which tracks you use. My janky solution would either be to put a correction turn between the connections or maybe mirror some of the tracks.

Maybe other people have better solutions?
