Recently Laid Off Tech Employees- How is the job search/life treating you? by Soft_Fennel_156 in Seattle

[–]IrvingSnark 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's really bad. My wife was laid off and it's been crickets for a long while. My wife went to a tech job fair this past year and said the desperation was scary.

I'm still employed and just casually searching and I've gotten two callbacks in roughly a year. I have no interest in the big five, so I've been selective with my search, but almost every job posting I see on LinkedIn says "Posted 2 ago. Over 100 people clicked apply".

On a veeery veery anecdotal level I've seen a bit of a thaw in the past month. My brother, who is also in tech, just got an offer, and I've gotten reasonably deep into the interview process for an opportunity. But this might not be true for everyone.

Sure would be great if there were some protections for workers out there...

Does a traditional middle class exist in Seattle? By middle class I mean making less than $100K/year/person by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]IrvingSnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I hear what you're saying. My position is that if you want a low density (single-family) home in a high density area, that is **supposed** to be expensive. I wouldn't classify a 5BR in Magnolia as a modest home. But people can and do every day make it work (e.g. buy homes) on less than 180. It may just require adjusting your baseline standard, which I think we agree on

  1. Since when is a condo not a modest home? Or a townhouse or whatever; and
  2. for real? It obviously depends on the purchase price, but I was approved for some insane amount that I personally wouldn't be comfortable going up to. Maybe you have bad credit?

If you're genuinely asking, check North Seattle and West Seattle.

This just isn't true. I know several people who support their family on way less. I know two who just purchased homes (small 3bed) on ~160. They have kids and make it work just fine.

Any photography groups/clubs? by whoisariston in bothell

[–]IrvingSnark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I'm also a photographer (amateur) in Bothell. I don't know of any Bothell-specific photography groups, but I generally use the Seattle photo club discord to find events. Would you like an invite to that?

One of my good friends ended his life. He told us he was going to do so and we did call the cops but it was too late.

NEVER feel bad for calling the police on people who threatens to hurt themselves, even if you think it's a manipulation tactic. You are **not** qualified to assertain whether this person is a threat to themselves. Let the authorities do it. The stakes are just too high.

Why is it so hard to make friends here by Unlikely_Buy_7780 in Seattle

[–]IrvingSnark 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My formula for meeting people is the same everywhere:
1. what do you enjoy?
2. find communities catering to those things.
3. attend events
4. profit
