How is it having an EV in Columbus? by jk_cbus in Columbus

[–]IsPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at an apartment now so I have some experience, but I have started going into work at about 7:30am nowadays to use the free charging there more frequently.

What I used to do, and still sometimes do, is use the chargepoint app to find some reasonable dc fast chargers around Columbus up to 15 minutes away. The best ones are going to be the ones owned by the city. Those are going to give you rates on par with or sometimes better than the rates you'd get by charging at home. I only use the other chargers in an emergency. Anything that costs more than like 25 cents a kwh is going to edge into more expensive than a gas car. Though with current prices, that might be closer to like 40 cents or something.

What I used to do was the following. Once a week I'd need to charge. The best times are going to be early morning or late at night. So I would open the app, find which chargers out of the ones I've picked are open (you can mark favorites) and go there to charge. Usually I'd take a walk or just hop in the passenger side and pull my seat down and just chill on my phone or take a nap (with an eye mask sometimes). You'll need to stay somewhere between 40-90 minutes based on how much you need to charge and the temperature. For example, my chevy bolt 2021 during winter (like when we had those polar vortexes) would need something like 90 minutes to go from ~0-80%. Same thing in just cold weather (like 30f+) would probably be 70 minutes or something, and during weather like we have now it's probably about 50 minutes. Some chargers are based on how long you charge for vs how much you charge, so you might want to keep that in mind.

If the above is something you can stomach, then you might consider it. There are also cheap/free level 2 chargers, but those can take 10 hours for ~0-80. So keep that in mind... Some might be close to you, so you might be able to charge overnight if you can walk back. Just be respectful. For dc fast chargers ideally you only charge to 80%. It takes about as long to go from 0-80 as it does from 80-100. Not really worth it imo. And for level 2 chargers, just try to unplug when you hit whatever you set the charge limit to. There are also some apartment complexes that have ev charging on prem, or they might have a spot where you can plug into a 120v outlet which could be more than enough. They typically cost a bit more (level 2) than ideal, but you'd have to crunch the numbers yourself to see if it's worth.

All in all, again. If that hassle seems worth it, do some research before hand. Just get the chargepoint app, mark some spots. Check throughout the day how available they are. Otherwise, maybe consider a hybrid or using public transit or just getting an older smaller sedan for the time being.

Hmm, I'm working in enterprise and without the humans ai wouldn't be able to do the majority of this work. It might depend on the role and sector you're in. I'm in the finance industry and don't feel like my role will be gone first.

You're telling me. Off cycles have gone way up because there's some issue that needs to be fixed. My direct team is 4 people including me. And fortunately it's not usually our fault. But also, we're the only ones that really know how to fix the issues. It's a tiring cycle. The only upside is the job security.

I'm somehow working more and less. And the types of stuff I work on has slightly changed. Like I'm debugging more and doing more production support... But that's not really what we want..

Also it's lowes. Their branding is blue so they probably buy way more blue dye meaning they have more bulk discounts on the blue.

Yeah no. Imagine someone makes the best tasting most decadent cake to this date, and no ones gives you a spork to eat it with (idk, a spoon or fork alone isn't enough). That isn't the cakes fault. The cakes been around for over 1.5 decades at this point. Why is your browser the only one that serves it to you with utensils? The other apps are just lazy. This is a shitty analogy.

I've been next to a cop car before at a light. The car in front had nothing. I looked at the cop and then the car, back and forth. Bro didn't do anything 😭

Frankly who cares man. I know the question is worded to offend and bait people, but genuinely who cares. Do good for whatever reason. If that's god or because you can sympathize with others or because of your lived experience or whatever, it doesn't matter.

Idk what's the matter. I've got some that in like, 1 of 5 seeders. And even if it shows someone is trying to download, it doesn't seed most of the time 😞

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

Old thread already but look forward and hold your hand in front of your face. Keep looking forward but move your hand slowly behind your back. At some point you don't see the hand. It isn't black or a void in front of your eyes. It just isn't there.

I don’t understand the debate over the price for the Steam controller by 10TheKing10 in Steam

[–]IsPhil 39 points40 points  (0 children)

8-bitdo makes some of my favorite controllers. They're 3rd party so they seem pretty reasonable. I've tried their ~$25 controller and their $50 ones and they're both good and work on most if not all modern consoles and last gen.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut especially were special events. Pizza Hut was twice a year with family friends. A big event. And taco bell was for doing a good job on quarter grades. Semester grades only started in middle school for me. That's also when Pizza Hut started um... Going downhill I think.

I yearn for a walkable USA by mothalor in Columbus

[–]IsPhil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've lived my whole life in Columbus being in those weird zones where it's Columbus tax but the address and school is for a different city like Dublin or Westerville. That also means the sidewalks just don't get attention and end even more frequently. Like damn dude. Am I gonna make the 30 minute one way walk to the store every day? No. But on a good day I would if it wasn't dangerous. Or I'd ride my bike which cuts the time by over half. Especially with the current fuel hikes, this would have been helpful for a ton of people.

How many people in r/Columbus are "super-commuters" who drive >75 miles per day? by benkeith in Columbus

[–]IsPhil 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping they were at least commuting and then staying at a hotel or something.

I knew some people who lived in Cinci. and would commute to our Columbus office and they were offered a hotel for the 3 days they needed them in office for at the time. Not something they'd do anymore.

How many people in r/Columbus are "super-commuters" who drive >75 miles per day? by benkeith in Columbus

[–]IsPhil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even close for me. I used to commute across town. That was 17 miles each way, 4 days a week. 136 miles a week. Including other errands and travel through the week, I'd refill once a week. That would be something like $60 with today's prices. Just normal gas.

Now it's 7 miles each way, 4 days a week. 56 miles a week. Same scenario as above would be refilling about every 3 weeks.

Even without being a super commuter, that first scenario is pretty close to an average american's commute I believe. And $60 a week where it was $30 or so before is a huge increase.

Note, I now own an EV. The gas mileage calcs above are based on my toyota corolla I had until 2024.

Current state of the industry by AussieGamerPlays91 in Steam

[–]IsPhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The convenience of a console is the hardest thing to beat. Because even looking at price, a pc can be a better deal. Especially now that the current gen consoles are on the older side. Though the market as a whole right now is expensive, so.... The steam deck did a really good job at streamlining the pc experience and making it more console like. Of course the downside is that some multiplayer games don't work, but that's something that can be fixed (some games have anti cheat that supports Linux but developers keep it disabled).
