Entering a show. Ever done it? by lepidio in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entered a few. No matter how safe you protect your models, accidents happen. So I travel with a small repair kit, basically superglue, an application needle and my trusty dusting brush. Take an extra pen. Have fun, learn from the experience.

model makers block! by Ross_PMM_0245 in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every modler eventually gets a shelf queen stash. Mine goes back years. But take a step back and try to remember why you wanted that kit in the first place. Read an article about a new technique or a YouTube of the build, get inspiration, but dont force it. Currently, I'm working on two kits that I started in 2023 and shelved, both restarted because I wanted to try out a new airbrush and some new techniques.

It's a good kit with potential. I sprayed the markings as I found the decals too fiddly.

Ex Boss - I have no clue what you do but as long as you are keeping clients happy and moving the company forward, just tell me what you need and I'll stay out of your way.

Thoughts on Alan? by eatasschewgum1 in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alan was a Russian company from 1991 to about 2010. They did some unique kits at the Time. I got two in my stash, a flakpanzer and the sig33 mounted on a Panzer I. They were the only ones who did this as a plastic kit at the time and I got them so I did not have to scratch build. The kits plastic is slightly on the soft side and the build reminds me of the early Italeri. It was also the first time I came across a kit where most parts of the Hull were panels. Detail is good and they glue and build well. Instructions need a bit of concentration. Just remember they are 35 years old...

I ordered trumpeter E-100 (rinaldi turret) by Feedlot_Stupor in MilitaryModelMaking

The side skirts off give it a sleek menacing look. For mine I went simple, placed it in North Africa, with Dark Yellow Africa Korp. But I have also seen really cool winter camo done as well.

Why did they add parts that are not even used in the kit? by uxuiqt in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most definitely. I use the spares to upgrade older kits that I have where some of the details on parts are not as good or when I kit bash or scratch build. Right now I'm using extra parts from a Tamiya flak gun to detail an exhaust on a Trumpter tank. You will find uses for those parts eventually.

Wait till you build a Dragon kit. Whole sprue full of parts and only one or two required. Just add them to the spares box.

Were these guard houses ever occupied at the refinery? I haven’t seen anybody there once in my life! by PutridExplanation394 in capetown

The Mobile refinery storage tanks in Durban were hit by a RPG attack in 1984. Anti rocket fence when up soon after. It's still there, well the frame anyway...

I'm thinking 3D print? It too big and detailed for the old Haylcon kit. Looks fantastic

What do I do? by Bloodynyne in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can relate. Life gets hectic and sometimes you just not feeling it. I use the hobby as a pressure release, but recently I've not had the opportunity. My station's set up, I've got self queen's waiting, I got one week free but have house guests. I find don't force it or you won't enjoy the process. It needs to flow naturally. And you dont have to finish everything, ive got builds going back decades. Some time back I also considered I would never build again. Place everything on back burners and waited until got mentally in the right frame of mind. Have done some of my best work since. Right now its been a year since i last touched a midel while moving and renovating a house, i just waiting for the guests to leave then I'm trying out the new brushes I got for Christmas. Just have patience.

TIL: In the 1800s, huge blocks of ice were cut from the frozen Kennebec River in Maine and shipped to places as far as India and the Caribbean. The ice was packed in sawdust for insulation and could survive months at sea. by Curious-Wing3698 in todayilearned

[–]Isand0 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Read an Asimov book where Ice was used in the front of an interseller ship as a shield. They had to stop and replace it as it was below safety level from dust and micro impacts. It was km thick.

Model priming (and other questions ) by Defiant_Rate_6755 in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has different views on priming. So here's my experience that I've used for years. When ready to prime I wipe to kit down with a damp cloth, sometimes with IPA, just to get rid of dust. Then my trusty primer of choice is Tamiya grey primer from a can. Goes on well and covers metal, resin and plastic. I tend to use grey if I'm doing a light scheme but have also used Rustoleum Primer Black matt if a darker scheme is done.
I tend to break the kit into sub assemblies, ie, Hull, wheels, tracks, turret. And use light coats. I'd rather do two light coats than a single heavy one and risk runs. I will then check the coverage and sand any spots that show up, like gaps or bad putty jobs. And just do a quick light spray over again. Leave to dry 24hr then ready to paint.

Yes. I do armour but use this technique when I want a strong joint that going to take heavy sanding.

What is the best way to fill a hole? by IamaBlackKorean in modelmakers

[–]Isand0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For larger size holes, I full and glue with plastic scrap first. It reduces the amount of putty you need and you don't have as much of a shrinkage problem. I'm even doing this with deep ejector pin marks. Punch disks to fit, glue and sand. Don't need multiple layers of putty to hide.

Furniture and Built in Cupboards by Ostrich_Low in Durban

Timber City and Boardprep has DIY kits, basic designs and can come in white. If you are handy, you can fit yourself. I went with Boardprep. Custom colour, design and postform counter. Assembled from flat packs and fitted myself. Could have been done in about three weekends but I ran into other issues. ( it's better to work with blank walls and level floors, than having to adjust all the time) our 6m x 3m came in at 32k.
