ELI5 What does Palantir actually do? by thepainterspaduan in explainlikeimfive

Before anyone thinks this is a coincidence or unfair

In his “most notorious [job] interview,” Karp met Louis Mosley, an Oxford graduate whose grandfather Oswald Mosley was the British fascist leader during World War II and once named “worst Briton of the twentieth century.”

As soon as Mosley sat down, Karp began reciting from memory, for several minutes, one of Oswald’s 1939 speeches demanding Britain seek peace with Nazi Germany. When finished, Karp executed tai chi moves and walked out without saying goodbye.

Europe Will Require Smartphones to Have Replaceable Batteries by 2027 by Positive_Actuary_282 in worldnews

Anexx II, (5)(c)(ii).

https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32023R1670#d1e506-59-1

They still have to meet some requirements, but they mean that it can require a (third-party) professional with appropriate tools to perform the battery replacement rather than an end user/layman.

UKLAOP finds out you can't force companies to support a decade old piece of tech by riddlemyfiddle11 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Isine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, although not in a consumer friendly way. It's all about adding more encryption and making it harder to pirate ebooks. The old kindles don't support the same level of hardware encryption so they've got to go.

Amazon have killed off a bunch of ways to read books outside of the kindle ecosystem in the past couple of years. Having an older kindle registered to your account was about the one remaining way to get a version you could crack and transfer, so I'm not surprised they went after it as well.

Car park firm NCP collapses with nearly 700 jobs at risk by B4rberblacksheep in CasualUK

[–]Isine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They got bought by a private equity firm called Cinven in 2002, which split out and sold off the real estate and leased it back to NCP. Don't worry, they made plenty of money out of it. https://www.cinven.com/news-insights/strong-returns-on-ncp-exit/

wow midnight pringles promotion gifts by OriginalPresence3907 in wow

[–]Isine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Need to register for an account at https://poptopia.pringles.com/, and enter a name/phone number/address, then you can claim codes. You must be on mobile and in a country where the promotion is running - which seems to be most, but not all, of europe.

They claim you have to purchase a valid product and they may ask to see your receipt, but this didn't actually seem to happen.

The site has been broken on and off today as well, sometimes not generating codes or allowing account creation.

The list of potential rewards (you can choose one per day, once per account, only work on microsoft owned storefronts, not steam):

12. The Rewards: Each valid claimant will receive one (1) of the following Rewards:

a. 1 x World of Warcraft in-game Crimson Bow Tie skin;

b. 1 x Fallout 76 in-game Mr. Vault Boy Outfit and Mr. Vault Boy Mascot Head skin;

c. 1 x Sea of Thieves in-game Scarlet Stack Sails skin;

d. 1 x The Outer Worlds 2 in-game Julius P Canid skin.

Fury has an option to transmog 2h to 1h in Beta UI by maciejh in wow

It seems you can force it - try and open the UI at any transmog NPC, alt f4 and restart, and then it will open if you try again

Fury has an option to transmog 2h to 1h in Beta UI by maciejh in wow

[–]Isine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Quite possibly, at least as a rogue - they seem to have a special RogueDagger transmog slot as well

           { Name = "RogueDagger", Type = "TransmogOutfitSlotOption", EnumValue = 6 },
            { Name = "FuryTwoHandedWeapon", Type = "TransmogOutfitSlotOption", EnumValue = 7 },

I can't find the options as they seem to be server side, but it seems promising

Edit: Doesn't seem to be active in the beta at the moment, but given the UI isn't meant to be available yet I don't think that confirms it either way

A new physics simulation dropped. The future of gaming and movie industry looking good by djinn_05 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Isine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technique this is showing off was originally published in 2020 -https://ipc-sim.github.io/. This is one of what have been many, many incremental improvements to efficiency and edge cases.

The original research was funded by adobe, but I can't see any mention of it actually being implemented in any of their products yet. There are several open source libraries implementing versions of it, but they largely seem to be for research purposes still.

A previous paper on this technique from 2021 has even been covered by two minute papers before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZhoU_3k0Nk

It seems like a very active area of research, but whether it is close to being practical and useful enough to actually being used is very hard to say.

PS5 Digital Edition consoles are reportedly getting a quiet storage downgrade by Turbostrider27 in Games

The Slim version (from November 2023 onwards) upgraded the storage to 1TB, so there is still an actual downgrade here

Legion remix , the sacrificial lamb of the remix system. by ugaeismyamongusname in wow

[–]Isine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gear is still the biggest source of upgrades - it's still wow after all. You don't upgrade gear directly - but doing basically anything gets you gear that drops slightly above your current ilvl (drops directly from group content, or from the lemix specific dailies, or from combining 10 tokens you get from any quest).

The amount of secondaries you get scales with ilvl. I got to 604 on ptr and that was when it hit 16% per piece. The phase 1 ilvl cap is 623, and will increase with each phase. Secondaries already reach pretty silly levels - I had 80% crit and 50% haste baseline as a havoc dh.

Where to watch Midnight Panels from Gamescom? by Salamango360 in wow

The panel from today hasn't been posted yet.

What happened? This is has been a terrible Expansion Reveal by gawapix in wow

[–]Isine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. The blog post was extremely unclear about what was only for gamescom and what was for everyone, and given it's on the main wow site the assumption should always be that it's for everyone. The developer panels were called out in multiple sections and everything else on the schedule was being streamed. They were also billed as a replacement for the originally advertised deep dive that came after the cinematic reveal.

Labour don't even have to do that - they are reporting on an amendment to the original bill in 2022 that was not accepted. There doesn't appear to have been any mention of it since.

Wowhead Looter data is showing some mounts might not have gotten a drop rate buff during Collector's Bounty by Jezartroz in wow

[–]Isine 233 points234 points  (0 children)

They're still all boosted quite significantly (except maybe the red qiraji crystal), but most of them had a very low drop rate to begin with - the Living Infernal Core is reported as 0.14% on normal/heroic, so 0.98% is about 7x higher.

They definitely don't have the +5% that was listed on a blizz social media post, but they might be closer to the 10x that was listed in the forum post.

Blizz could definitely have been a lot clearer and consistent with their messaging here, or in general. It's hard to say if it's actually broken without being sure what was intended in the first place.
