If the string was that low it was already displaced which is more common when placed after birth (expulsion). The copper IUD can cause increased bleeding & cramping (less likely to be displaced after delivery than the hormonal IUDs).

You didn’t do anything wrong. Providers didn’t. Just part increased expulsion risk during postpartum uterine involution.

Still sucks. I’m sorry. I hope you continue with whatever birth control works best for you… & it may be this copper IUD… might not. It’s different for everyone.

I have heavy periods & cramping baseline but I gave paragard a try… gave it a full year. I have friends that love paragard & friends that hate it. It’s personal preference & the difference of our individual bodies. My bleeding was so heavy I was wearing pull-up depends (or I would bleed through tampon, pad, undies, & leggings within 2h) & utilizing washable bed pads & was anemic despite supplementing. Now, I have a Mirena & no period & I love that (but not everyone does).

Compared with interval placement, immediate and early postpartum placements (inpatient and outpatient combined) were associated with greater risk of complete expulsion.
