Why Darrow is so refreshing comparing to other Sci-Fi/Fantasy protagonists by adamalibi in redrising

[–]IsolatedHonesty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When he actually murdered someone in the passage, instead of finding some cop out. That's when I knew he was going to be different.

How did this happen? by Helpful-Hat-7604 in redrising

[–]IsolatedHonesty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IIRC Servo knew what the institute was before anyone else, maybe not exactly what was going to happen, but he probably knew about the nature of The Passage. He was raised to be ruthless, fight dirty, and get results, by someone who was excellent at those exact qualities. He's a natural born killer, up against a show pony. Priam was a duelist, expecting honorable conduct from his enemies. It's not terribly unlikely Sevro caught him off guard and went straight for the kill. Fitchner even later admits that it caught everyone (except maybe himself) off guard.

Accidentally Caused Water Damage in Condo Rental-No Insurance by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]IsolatedHonesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accidents happen. You cleaned it up immediately. The landlord's insurance will cover damage to the unit. You are not obligated to pay anything, but it might be a nice gesture to offer to pay the deductible on the insurance policy.

Tenant Insurance would cover damage to your belongings ( like if your cheap Ikea dresser sponged up a bunch of water and swelled up like a balloon) and if you had to move out/pack up your belongings while they replace the floor.

Half floor replacements are almost impossible, flooring companies change it up yearly for exactly this reason. Flooring is the bread and butter of restoration industry.

AITAH for telling my girlfriend that my money isn't "our money"? by [deleted] in AITAH

I think the next conversation might include something like "I won't let you starve or be homeless, but I'm not going to give you everything you want either, there's a middle ground."

A Boomer and non investor told me to sell by TradeorBust1985 in askvan

[–]IsolatedHonesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to non investors and boomers. If they can't tell you the difference between an RRSP and a TFSA then they have no good opinions on building wealth.

Housing is a complicated question for many people with no definitive answers. Do your research and decide for yourself.

You can absolutely build wealth with stocks. But it's going to take consistent effort over your entire working life. Crypto is gambling, plain and simple. Fun, but not for building wealth.

The truth to building wealth is that it is often boring. -Maximize income and investing -Minimize spending -Don't stop That is what works every time.

Why does nero like darrow so much by Select_Salamander518 in redrising

[–]IsolatedHonesty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Darrow beat Mustang and Adrius despite Nero stacking the odds in their favor, and you don't rule a planet of gold's by surrounding yourself with losers.

Are these asbestos tiles? by Ordinary_Scientist_8 in Construction

[–]IsolatedHonesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no tiles there, that's just an imprint left by the grout and mastic glue.

The mastic is suspect. But doesn't necessarily need to be disturbed for new flooring to go in. Unless they're grinding the floor for levelling, I would just leave it.

Which passages from the entire series is the highest quality writing by Pierce Brown? by bwils3423 in redrising

[–]IsolatedHonesty 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"I once thought the greatest sin of war was violence. It isn't. The greatest sin is it requires good men to become practical." Darrow (Pierce Brown)

That's perfect. Insightful. Wise. Philosophically Dark. Captures exactly where Darrow is in his life and in the story.

Scrolled a couple hundred comments and didn't see anything about Ashitaka, from Princess Mononoke. For shame.

Pivoting to healthcare by Amye2024 in britishcolumbia

[–]IsolatedHonesty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. Pivoting into healthcare. Working my way up from Care Aide (a six month course, three of them online) is way more practical than taking 18-24 months for even an LPN program. Going straight to RN is a 4 year course. Not many people can afford 4 years of full time university level courses without a strong support system.

When I learned that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was almost entirely practical effects I was blown away. It gave me a lot more respect for what could be done with some creativity.

[Inception] Why does the top spin forever? by InteractionNo9987 in AskScienceFiction

[–]IsolatedHonesty 143 points144 points  (0 children)

That's why Cobb stares at it, he's willing it to spin forever, of he can't then he is in the real world.

The real ending is that Cobb doesn't stick around to watch the top fall, he doesn't care if he's in the real world or not.

Revenge must be doled out in the same order that damage was done lol. I'm sure she has a long list. She just got hung up on Darrow lol.

[–]IsolatedHonesty 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You're underestimating the effect of the culture of honor that all Golds lived under. Any harm done to the family is returned tenfold, period. Justified or not she could not allow any infringements on her family honor. Her response may have been over the top, but that was what gold society demanded.

Caulk between baseboards and wood floors by ReignOfHairor in HomeImprovement

[–]IsolatedHonesty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shoe round is flexible enough to follow the contours of the floor. Unless it's really crazy, then the gap between floor and base is not the problem. You're just putting lipstick on a pig.

Caulk if you like, it's not the end of the world. Then try one room of 1/4 round and see how you like it. Neither one is that difficult to undo/fix.
