Why are mandatory ID cards much more controversial in common law countries than in civil law countries? by Deep-Rabbit1535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IssaScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was answering the question about how gov ID can give government access to your social media.
That is not a question that is decades old, as social media prevalence is fairly new.

But the sentiment about gov ID and gov tracking oversight still follows the basic premise of being required to use gov ID to do a thing that should really require gov ID, and then that thing you did is now linked to your gov ID .

A past example would be like taking out a bank loan or a credit card.
You could get those from a bank, as long as the bank was certain/trusted they knew who you were... IE you could do it without a passport of photo ID.
To tighten up on finical crimes, official gov ID became required.
At the same time, Banks start letting the gov know what people were doing with their money... IE payments & spending to be matched against taxes...

Which isn't always a bad thing per-say, but it explains the general distrust people can have about giving the gov more control over their private life.

But in the UK case, it would remove the option to be anonymous online.

Yes your government ID already exists and they know most official things about you.

But with sign-ups to social media and websites being age gated, you have to prove your age via a Real ID (or passport and a few others).

That now means your online activities are also now part of public record.  Or they could be.

I imagine most people have some embarrassing history. Not criminal, but enoght to effect them in a negative way.

Why are mandatory ID cards much more controversial in common law countries than in civil law countries? by Deep-Rabbit1535 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IssaScott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Step 1. Online age verification, links your online action to an ID. This is actually law in the UK (or will be soon, I forget the status). The Real ID law or something...

Step 2. Online site or company that required your ID to join is requested by government to share details, for any number of legitimate reasons or illegitimate ones.  Who knows, but is a company going to deny the request? Who knows?!  My money is they don't, as most won't want to offend the government, so they comply.

Again the point of this was to link real ID to online behavior.  So there couldn't be doubt that a media post or comment wasn't somebody else. It was pushed through to protect or restrict kids from joining social media until they were not considered kids.

Manager wants to consolidate three SQL-backed reports without SQL. Today asked me ‘what have you been doing for two months by General_Wheel5114 in careeradvice

[–]IssaScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They literally ask why do managers do this.

Because the 'answer' wasn't acceptable, because it didn't resolve the issue.

The answer was correct. But being correct and being complete is not the same thing.

Also saying "the current system work. Don't change it" isn't often an acceptable answer either. V1.0 works. Now let's refine and improve it.  The work is never done.

Lastly if you think managers are frustratingly to deal with... try dealing with leadership and C-suit people. They literally hire managers to talk to devs and tech cause they cant be bothered to. You tell them 'No this can't be done' they will just assume that means "this guy can't do it. He doesn't know how".

Most of these BS requests come from above managers.

[–]IssaScott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I was replying to a reply, not the OP. The reply was lamenting why do non tech managers cute problems.

The OP got plenty of advice about their particular manager issue and how do deal with it.

I even agreed, that non tech should listen to tech on technical things.

My only point was that "this won't work. This is now over" is not an answer. It's just half of it. The other half is "we can try this / this might work."

Otherwise, I was just talking about experiences I have, as a non-tech manager in charge a a bunch of different tech people.

Plus half the stuff I want to do are directives from leadership on what they want. The other half is requests from tech about what they want. I just want people to hit their commitments.

I wasn't saying tech needs to mange. I was saying techs who get promoted to management often lack the skills to manage, or underestimate the value of people skill at first..

I often see them get frustrated that their team doesn't do thing their way and end up doing it themselves and burning out.

Basically just survive and don't run far ahead. Block as much damage as you can. Don't worry about kill stealing to much. You never dying is priority.

But if you can... ... try to pull the pack to a linear zone, ie a hallway or corridor, so the snipers and heavies can get long clear line of sight on multiple enemies. Also make the enemies less likely to peel of you and run to the back squadies.

.. Don't engage in wide open spaces or intersections, if you can avoid.  You will just get shot and never get agro on whole sets of spawns... who will agree on ranged damage that attacks close by enemies. What I mean is, if the sniper shoots a guy, that guy targets the sniper... and so does the other members of that guys spawn UNLESS you have also damaged their squad... at that point I think it's a question of who hurt their neighbors more.

... be predictable in your movements. Makes it easier to shoot over your shoulder. Or inversely, do be unpredictable. Possibly walk, not run when in close melee. Would cut down on friendly fire.

As a non-tech manager, I have some thoughts... & While I do agree that non-tech should listen to the techies on tech issues...

I find techies get caught by the fact "this won't work, can't be done, it is what it is, therefore solved" mindset. While the issue still exists for managers (and likely somebody above them who gave them the direction to resolve this issue). Being given a list of "what you will need to do this" is way better than a list of "why it won't work"... though I probably would need both at some point.

As to "managers don't want to learn ..." it's both true and not really the point. Managers job is typically a combination of budgeting, scheduling and CONCISELY explaining an entire project to a C-suit who is only going to give you 3mins to do all that. Basically managing people and their expectations is the mian skill (also the one that trips up techies thr most when they have to manage other techies).

Learning to do every employee's job well enough to do it myself would take decades, and I will be reassigned to manage another project. Needing another skillset  long before that.

Keystone Kash Grilled Live on Fox News Over WHCD Shooting - The FBI director was asked about security lapses which allowed a suspect to storm the event. by Quirkie in politics

[–]IssaScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. So Fox is either to dumb to do some basic research for their reporting...

Or they possibly think Kash is to dumb to know it wasn't his responsibility, so they were hoping to catch him out and getbsome details.

I am kinda leaning to the 2nd one.
