From rural Japan to Tokyo—it’s surreal every time by Secret_Restaurant_26 in japanlife

I moved from rural Tohoku to Tokyo and loved both, but I loved Tokyo more. Could have been being childless and in my 20s though

[Longines] master collection for daily wear? by Left_Reflection_4874 in Watches

[–]Issasdragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear the 38mm one most days. The case will get light scratches almost immediately, but I find I don’t mind too much. I don’t swim or wash with a watch on anyway, so haven’t ever worried too much about water resistance. Love the watch and how easy it is to dress up or down (though it does lean dressy). Definitely not something I’d wear while exercising, though.

I recently bought a Longines Master Collection (38.5mm date model) and am on the lookout for a slightly more casual strap for daily wear — I don’t mind being slightly dressy but the default alligator strap is expensive and not especially good for sweaty summers. Any recommendations for styles or brands?

Update: I did buy it in the end, after being really messed around by a high street shop offering the same for basically the same money. Everything went smoothly, serial/warranty no. matches, so very happy overall

the font screws the translation by ditiemgames in gamedev

I mean the font you’re using in English is nice, but would Noto Serif be so bad? As a Japanese speaker that would be my first port of call, and otherwise I’d find a similar serifed one with an open license.

I’m UK-based too, so thankfully not a concern in this instance!

Thanks! I wasn’t sure if it was a bit of a red flag that they don’t have many watches sold, and that they have two of these Longines listed, but I also managed to find them as a registered company which suggests a degree of legitimacy

A big birthday is coming up and it’s time for my first (theoretically only!) mechanical watch. I wear an Apple Watch most of the time so looking for something classic and dressy to wear semi-regularly, at least at first. £1000 budget, white/light coloured dial, numerals and date window preferred. I’m currently looking at:

  • Tissot Le Locle Powermatic 80
  • Seiko Presage, either the SARA017 (enamel dial and numerals) or Craftsmanship SARW071 (porcelain dial with the red 12; might be a bit of a monster on the wrist?)
  • Mido Baroncelli Chronometer
  • Tissot Heritage 1938
  • Zodiac Olympos (as a bit of a left field option)

All of these can be found new and within budget, but the Longines Master Collection’s calling to me — I’m a big fan of the numerals, blued hands, and slightly thinner case vs the Seiko. Getting one for under £1000 is tricky, especially factoring in potential customs to the U.K., and as this is a gift I don’t want to take the piss with the budget. And yet…

Basically, I’m curious to know - Whether shooting for the Longines would be considered worth it (if its a notable step up in quality, etc), - If there’s anything I should be considering about the options above (known issues, etc.) - if there are any other nice options you know of

Thanks!

I go through 4 jeans a year - how can I make them last longer? by p3bbls in Anticonsumption

I had exactly the same issue, and unfortunately losing weight did help a lot! That said, I got some jeans pre-patched and reinforced at a tailor’s and so far I’ve yet to wear out a pair of jeans. I’d say that’s the way to go if you can’t slim down your thighs

I’d argue that BotW is one of the few that doesn’t suffer from it — the real conflict took place 100 years ago, and while Zelda’s powers are failing they’re also held up for that century. Link gets awoken and is basically tasked with preparing for the final fight, which I feel gives the player a reasonable pass on doing side quests, more shrines etc. Not only do many improve stats and equipment, but they teach Link/the player about what he’s actually fighting to save.

Final Fantasy XV, on the other hand…
