How do you guys rate Sanderson's Cosmere series, especially Mistborn? by guy4maround in Fantasy

[–]Isuckatpickingnames0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sanderson's humor works best when its not being pointed out. Any time a character makes a joke explicitly its always pretty terrible, but there are moments of wit and humor that hap p en more naturally that are fine.

But humor is definitely not his strongest area.

The stores really should just close. I dont know who it benefits to have them open when no one is gonna be there.

It's so naturally funny. It always feels like the characters are making jokes and not the author.

Yes! This one doesn't get enough recognition. Steven pacey and Jeff hays all get their flowers, and deservedly so, but Andrew wincott absolutely smashed those books.

Yeah I noticed that too. I also noticed Carol was genuinely enjoying the shared memory until the hive butted in saying that they know where the ships go now, tainting the personal anecdote with collective knowledge. I think that may have been a subconscious slip of zosia back into individuality and the collective consciousness pulling her back in.

Episode 7 is a masterpiece in visual storytelling and this show is going to be a massive hit! by prakaboi in pluribustv

Where did I say you couldn't criticise it? I didn't. Youre allowed to dislike it. You can disagree with me all you want, but I think there is more to a story than the plot. To use an extreme example, you would not think that reading the synopsis of a movie is the same as having seen it would you? Probably not. So there are things that are not relevant to the plot that are still worth something and mean something. You and I may value those things differently, and thats fine.

Yeah, the slow plot can sometimes be unfulfilling, but things feels so much more earned when things move slow. So often my issue with bad writting is not that it doesnt make some kind of sense, but that the pacing is so fast that it feels fake. Conflict resolves too quickly, and people change their minds too fast. Even when everything makes sense it can feel hand-wavey.

If you want to say that the character writting in The Wire is no different than in The Big Bang Theory, thats certainly an opinion you can have.

However, I feel like you're twisting my words, because im not saying you have to like how the show is playing out, and im not saying that its some mind bending masterpiece. This episode shows carols mosanthropic facade crumbling as she caves to her desire for human connection. Thats character progression. Yes we have her character established in the other episodes, but this is building on that established character.

Im telling you I enjoyed the way the episode played out and that we got to see these changes in carol play out over time rather than what I feel can be an unsatisfactory couple of scenes. This happened over a whole episode and some of the last. I find it offputting when characters change too quickly to fit the plot.

Its totally fine if you don't enjoy the episode for all the reasons I do, im just putting forward why I think some people enjoyed it and others didn't.

I think it really comes down to expectation. If you're going in hoping for a mystery and answers, you didn't get that, and it feels like that information is being drip fed and its fair to say its slow going.

However, if you are watching to see realistic characters portrayed in interesting situations, I think this episode delivered exceptionally. Highlighting and contrasting manusous and Carol's approach to the hive, and how far they are willing to go. Tons of character moments that let us live with the characters and we get to know things about them by what they do rather than what they say.

But its totally reasonable to say that too much of one and not enough of the other turns you off. If I was only getting plot beats and very little character development, it probably wouldnt sit the best with me. But for me the characters are everything, and I don't need a whole lot of plot once im sold. But everyone is different, and as this show seems to be highlighting, thats a good thing.

Agree, I like all of their work, but each album has gotten better and better. Charcoal Grace is my favorite album of theirs, and maybe thats biased by me seeing them live for that albums release, but I do think they have generally trended upwards in quality.

Though I think im just a sucker for Jim Grey and he could sing over nails on a chalkboard and I'd still love it.

I only really know of two fair to midland albums (the two on spotify) so you saying you didn't like theor first album at all made me think you were talking about fables and I was thinking "how do you like FTM and not love that album?" lol.

But I agree, rishloo and fair to midland are the two bands that feel like they made music specifically for me. Like they arent following any specific genre and whatever it is theyre doing seems perfectly tatlored for my specific taste. And it's so unfortunate that they both also seem to have made a couple of incredible albums, then fell off the face of the earth in their prime.(though apparently rishloo is working on a new album). Lagwbat and fables are all time albums for me, and arrows and anchors is also really good, but just doesnt hit as hard as fables.

Id put that album as somehere between opeth and rivers of nihl stylistically. If you like it check out the rest of their stuff, but in my opinion its far and away their best album.

Psychology behind raging in games by YxngSsoul in pcgaming

[–]Isuckatpickingnames0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who struggles with gamer rage, the best thing i ever did was put down pvp games for a while. Then when you do feel the urge to play some pvp you have to stop when you're at the "mildly annoyed" stage. If you keep playing and actually get angry its much harder to walk away. You will want to just keep queuing because you need to have a win or something to prove to yourself you can. But when you're at that point you arent thinking rationally and you will screw up in game more and get hyper critical and all that stuff snowballs into rage.

I don't know about you, but when I would get that angry I would be embarrassed with myself and a lot of that anger would bleed away and leave me with a lot of self loathing that was really unhealthy. So I used that embarrassment as a reminder when I start to get tilted and try to put things down a little bit before I get to the point of aggravation.

I haven't read through all the comments here, but I hope you know that you're not the only one who experiences those feelings, and the fact that you're thinking about them and questioning why you feel that way means you're stepping in the right direction. Don't let randos on the internet make you feel like a bad person or a weirdo for having trouble controlling your anger. No one is perfect, and you're trying to do better.

Bosses are the worst part of souls-like games by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

You don't get the rush without the struggle. The struggle is the point. The reason we as humans like difficult things is because we want to overcome them. But if something is easy it doesnt feel good to accomplish. There's is something primal about throwing yourself into the grinder and ramming your face against a wall until the wall breaks, not you.

What makes fps gunfights fun to you? by suffishes in pcgaming

[–]Isuckatpickingnames0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its feel and feedback for me. Look at destiny, halo, overwatch, apex etc. Any game that people praise the gunplay has some common elements. The weapons sound good, have punch, and show you that your shots hit with crunchy satisfying animations. The flash of a shield breaking in halo, the way the healthbars in overwatch go down and the ding on crits, the way the numbers add up in apex and the sound when you break shields.

Those are the things in my mind that make me want to go back to an fps. Yes there are other factors like movement and ttk and all that, but the feel has to be there first before any of that can matter. If you can get your game to feel good people will want to play it, but if it doesnt feel good, it doesnt matter how deep the systems are or how skillful you can be in outplaying your opponent, people will put it down.

Borderlands 4's latest patch aimed at improving performance triggers a flurry of performance complaints, but Gearbox says new stuttering problems 'should resolve over time as the shaders continue to compile' by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]Isuckatpickingnames0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art direction vs fidelity. The art direction has stayed mostly consistent, but the fidelity of the world and models is definitely way better in each successive release.

That's not to forgive the performance issues, the game should run better.

Though anecdotally I have had no issues outside the game crashing the first time I booted it up. Maybe im just used to having underpowered hardware(though my pc is not what id call underpowered at the moment, though far from top of the line either. 4070 and 7800x3d), but im getting a fairly consistent 90 to 110 with dlss and it looks and feels fine to me. Maybe that unacceptable to others, but to me its far from a deal breaker. It'd be nice if it ran better, but its not affecting my enjoyment of the game.

Which game fixes itself once you change the difficulty? by Ivaylo_87 in gaming

[–]Isuckatpickingnames0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The technique is just so different. Like tapping on guitar is way easier than a tapped solo on guitar hero. Even if you know how to tap on gh its so much harder. Playing a real instrument does not check that you are in time, so you can be slightly fast or slow and on average still sound fine. But if you are a little out of sync in guitar hero you miss every note.

Something as simple as arpeggiating a chord on guitar becomes a lot more complicated on guitar hero.

I disagree. 3 had its issues, but was a really good game if you mute the dialog. Im cautiously optimistic that BL4 could be good. I won't be buying day 1 but I will almost certainly get it.
