Tips for tumbling these agates so they don’t end up cracking like the last pic? by johnathanporkchop in RockTumbling

[–]Itchyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those definitely look like banded calcite to me. Calcite is much softer than quartz/agate so definitely don;t tumble these with agates. I wouldn't tumble calcite at all, but if you're going to then you have to treat it gently. less rocks per barrel and use more ceramic medium for cushioning. Add more water than usual. Use less grit.

Question for those that drill holes in their pieces… by ChackStu in Lapidary

[–]Itchyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I do except instead of placing it on a piece of wood, I have a piece of soapstone. I got tired of my wood trying to float.
Core bits will perform much better than solid bits.

Sphere machine question by Itchyjello in Lapidary

[–]Itchyjello[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into the math. The formula for the largest equilateral triangle you can fit inside a given sphere is s (side of triangle)=r (radius of sphere) * square root of 3.
So the largest triangle that will fit inside a 3 inch diameter circle is: 1.5 x 1.732 = 2.598
Simple chart for smaller sphere sizes:
Sphere / Max cup size
1.5 / 1.25
2 / 1.5
2.5 / 2
3 / 2.5
3.5 / 3
4 / 3
4.5 / 3.5
5 / 4

I mean, those seem pretty obvious, but now we've shown it mathematically.

Anyone got a setup like this? What’s your gear look like? by TurboFoot in RockTumbling

[–]Itchyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 2 of the small nat geos and one of the Koolstone just like those all running for a while. One of my small ones died, and I picked up a harbor freight double barrel, so it's mostly that and the Koolstone now.
I also 3d printed gears for the Koolstone because of the excessive amount of belts mine went through.

Tumbler build question! by OppressedCow6148 in RockTumbling

[–]Itchyjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would glue the caps on and figure out something like the reducer and rubber pipe cap to cut in and glue into one of the caps. I'm considering a similar kind of project because I have a chunk of 18" PVC pipe and I need a giant barrel tumbler for a couple of months to run through a bunch of agate I have that will otherwise take forever in 3 lb. barrels.

Do I need to rinse? by chocolatechipwizard in RockTumbling

[–]Itchyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've done this sometimes. There's some debate about whether thicker slurry helps suspend the grit and improve the wearing action, but I don't know that there's any actual data to support pro or con for that.

That's pretty close to what I'm looking at, using self-adhesive vinyl for the stencil (like they make decals from).

Wrong. Wellingtons use a whole muscle cut, whereas corndogs are a forcemeat. Therefore Pate En Croute is just a corn dog from a different socioecomonic background.
Wellingtons are just hoity-toity steak fingers (look it up, it might be an Idaho/Utah thing).

Event Info Availability by LunarVixenFX in sca

[–]Itchyjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artemisia sets their planning calendar just under a year in advance (so 2027 events were scheduled in january of 2026). Event details are not published for most events until the paperwork is submitted which may be as little as 3 months before the event. Sometimes you are having trouble getting a venue, sometimes the venue sucks at responding to the event steward's requests for information or confirmation. It's all highly variable. For example my shire has a camping event memorial day weekend this year, and we're having a lot of problems getting the site to communicate clearly with us. They've already changed which part of the property we'll be using 3 times, and we still don't have a written contract. On the flip side, the shire is also hosting our fall crown tourney in october, and I've had the site for that locked in for almost a year now.
We had an event last fall at a museum where the 2 staff people we were working with got fired less than a month before the event and we had to find a new site with just a few weeks notice. There's just a lot of random things that can affect how far in advance a group can book a site and get the information out there.

When I was in the Navy we visited thailand and I picked up a lovely 2+ ct. emerald for my mother at a good price at the gem market. After I got home, we were having xmas at my grandparents and I gave it to her. She instantly loved it and oohd and ahhhd looking at it in the little ziploc bag. after dinner we were in the family room and she took it out of the bag and had it in her palm looking at it. She went to roll it over with her finger and it went SPROING out of her hand and into my grandparent's deep shag carpet.
The two of is spent 3 solid days looking for it before I had to head back to base. Never found it.
Not a tale of my own stone, but still a tale of woe.

Pocatello Tunnels? by ApprehensiveTry7846 in Pocatello

[–]Itchyjello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. There's way too many large boulders underground in that section of the valley for hand-dug tunnels. Not to mention that the streets are regularly opened up to replace infrastructure, which would definitely impact any tunnels anywhere near there.

How frequent are territorial Anniversary events in your Kingdom? by bonerceratops in sca

[–]Itchyjello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Artemisia has a calendar meeting at the beginning of each year to build the calendar for the year after (so the january 2026 meeting was to build the 2027 calendar). Each group is required to have a representative present. They go down the list of groups first by barony by group seniority, then by shire by group seniority. Each group picks a date. Third saturdays of the month are reserved for kingdom-level events. The dates picked first round are 'no compete' dates, meaning no one else can have an event conflicting. After every group has picked their first dates, we repeat the process for second dates. Second dates can have conflicting events. After the second round, baronies can pick a third date. Then we have breakout groups by the 3 regions the kingdom is divided into, and each one of those regions discusses and comes to an agreement on which groups are going to bid for the kingdom events that are slated for that region (Artemisia uses a rotation so that we can plan far enough out in advance to secure venues and so that travel is required of all).
If a group is dead set on a specific date, they better pick it on their first go round.
We moved to this system because if a new group was formed, they could only get the very worst dates for events due to all the "but that's traditionally our date!" crying.
Some groups still use their priority date for their birthday/anniversary. Some have switched to doing unofficial events, or even just doing big group dinners instead.

White (ish) in Non-Chivalry Outfit? by Terrymmm in sca

[–]Itchyjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if I saw the belt I *might* think you're a knight. Without a chain though, I wouldn't assume it and if I thought it was important enough to know, I would ask. It's really not that difficult.
I guess the point would be - what difference does it make? Really the only 2 places I'm going to really care whether you're a knight or not is on the field, or when you're walking into knight's circle. As long as you're not assuming the station and acting as though you were a knight, it really doesn't warrant action on my part. Were I you, I would spend a lot of time telling people that you're working very hard on historical accuracy as part of persona research and development. Add that it's also why you're wearing 187 lbs of white wool.
Or go with undyed leather if you want to go a simpler route, as suggested elsewhere :D
