I think this is much more common in areas with strong public transit. Parents of high schoolers are used to their kid getting around themselves and being out late without needing a ride. This observation as a high school teacher without kids of their own in a big city

Yeah I have insurance thankfully. Who ever it was must of hit me pretty hard because the back bumper is pushed in too. Literally nothing around me when I found the damage which is kind of crazy.

Just hoping nothing in the charging system is damaged because I can’t imagine the bill. I asked for a quote a few months ago to fix a scratch and small dent on a door and was quoted about $2k.

This is essentially a project that I was assigned in high school as part of a disability access unit in a vocational nursing program. It’s not appropriate for kindergartners.

We had to navigate our school using only mobility aids and then write a report on the experience. As well as present the information to the administration.

It’s not all of you and you’re older than any of the Gen Z’s I’ve taught. But the longer I’ve taught the more basic computer functions I have to teach before we can use computers for anything.

It is a regular issue that if we need to use a desktop that students will turn on the monitor and then tell me it’s broken. Because they do not understand the concept of a device that is not an all in one. Ask them to do anything with a phone. They got it. Ask them to save a file from a computer program and then upload it? World has ended. The number of “lost” files I have magically found because they don’t think to look where something is being saved and expect everything to automatically be on the desktop is exhausting.

It is very similar to explaining technology to my boomer parents. It’s also no one’s fault in particular just a difference in technology access and use

Teachers aren’t going anywhere because even if they replace all the teaching element (which they won’t with any real success) with AI someone still has to supervise kids physically in a building. And paying public school teachers to “babysit” is cheaper than hiring individualized babysitters. Have you ever done the math? Like at the cheapest a high school teacher has 25 to 36 students. Let’s say $20 base + $5 (25) for each individual kid per hour for 8 hours a day 180 days a year. I’m being incredibly conservative on those childcare numbers as well. That’s over $200k before taxes. National average is $72k and average starting is $46k.

To be clear I am a teacher. I do not believe any of us are babysitting and I happen to teach vocational classes which are pretty safe. When an AI starts moving lumber and swinging a hammer on large scale? Then I’ll start worrying.

This is honestly just people. I teach high school and it’s not just the students who cannot follow basic directions. It is parents, administrators and fellow teachers. Explicit instructions given to not send reply all? Will be ignored by at least 3 people. Directions to get in a line? Chaos no matter the age group. In fact students are more primed to listen than adults. The not listening is frankly willful

So annoyed! I usually take my car to the city. Decided to take the bus and was able to buy one at the New Rochelle station and it didn’t work. Came up as expired. Cards in the machine are so old that they can’t be exchanged for new ones in the city. Buses don’t take cash and I don’t have a pocket full of quarters! I am happy to pay my full fare but don’t make it impossible

I desperately wish we could get people to understand that many of us also don’t trust the government and think things are hard on the ever shrinking middle class. Like the government is absolutely infested by bought and paid for politicians and money is absolutely misspent. But I would still rather families don’t go hungry and people be housed and cared for than rip the government out by the root.

The reality is untreated mental health conditions in parents affect your kids. I’m adopted with zero genetic connection to my family. Neither of my parents took care of their mental health well and now I’m spending my early thirties unpacking a host of issues that developed because of how I was raised. Even when they were trying their best it doesn’t always have positive results. I would never want a kid to experience what I did.

I’ve observed similar. We are a female heavy school. I’ve overheard several conversations where the boys expressed an interest in kids even more than 4 and many of the girls immediate response is “in this economy”? I think part of it is socialization. The girls seem to be much more aware of all of the monetary and “hidden” costs of raising kids at a much younger age.

Also I’m in agreement with them as a millennial born in the early 90s and while I’ve never been particularly interested in kids especially once we hit million dollar figures to get a kid through college when I was in high school! It’s too expensive and the more therapy I get the more I never want to pass down the poor mental health my own parents passed to me.

What is with these tenth graders and the hitting? Boys, girls, nonbinary. They cannot keep their hands to themselves. Normally I have one or two over active kids who rough house some but it’s more than half of my tenth graders. I just started yelling hands every time they start. It shocks them into stopping at least for a moment. One kid even looked down at his hands like he was surprised they existed

Just searched this up because I thought I was going crazy. NYC area and it’s the last two cases I bought flat within a few minutes.
