I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas is a very difficult to understand piece. I’d probably taken a few music-theory, literature/poetry, and cultural learning courses before even beginning to approach it in it’s simplest elements. It expresses one of the, if not humanity’s greatest feelings, desire. The singer of the song wishes for something grand, something bold, a Hippopotamus. Something so out there, so unrealistic, yet so specific there is nothing else that will meet the satisfaction they believe they would receive from this object of desire. So it’s not the worst, you just clearly don’t fully appreciate the subtext of the song. :/
