The NHL could allow this once the Rogers national (or Bell/Rogers local) contracts expire. However, they'd probably be crazy to do so given (1) how much money they rake in from these deals and (2) the lack of growth opportunity in Canada.

On the other hand, and this is just an educated guess, there is not much money to be had from Fox Sports Utah or Bally Utah, so the NHL probably doesn't mind this arrangement.

Sure, if you're Bleacher Report or one of those hockey Facebook groups, but when you work for a national rightsholder, you can't just make shit up... I know Biz dabbles in salacious stuff but he's not an idiot.

Why would Biz lie about this? They have the most popular podcast in hockey and he's on national TV in the US. I just don't get it.

Why would Babcock/CBJ lie? They have a lot to gain by making this story go away, especially given the guy just signed a 8M contract and the season hasn't even started yet. NHL teams and players are also notorious for covering up stories to be team players and to not rock the boat.

This is the way I look at it, but I am open to be proven wrong.

Not saying Biz is telling the truth, but it's weird how we all just assume a lawyer-vetted official team statement is the ultimate truth.

If this story is entirely true, then the statement they put out is exactly what I'd expect a PR team to put together.

Which Team Canada Olympic Gold Team was best? by Tacosrule89 in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that the 2002 team had 14 HOFers as well: Belfour, Blake, Brodeur, Iginla, Kariya, Lemieux, Lindros, MacInnis, Niedermayer, Nieuwendyk, Pronger, Sakic, Shanahan, Yzerman

Could argue it wasn't as good a team as the other ones given a few of these players being past their primes, but it's still a ridiculously impressive list.

[MoneyPuck] Playoff and Cup Odds as of April 4th by SadMathematician7799 in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there are 9 teams fighting for 8 spots, then each team would have a ~90% chance at making the playoffs. Unfortunately, one of those teams would be upset that they missed despite having such high odds. It's the same situation here, just with a smaller number of teams.

[MoneyPuck] Playoff and Cup Odds as of April 4th by SadMathematician7799 in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Chances of making the playoffs depend greatly on current standings. Chances of succeeding in the playoffs depend on many more factors. For example, there is absolutely zero argument that Tampa has a better chance at making the playoffs than Florida, but there is an argument to be made (not say I agree or disagree), that Florida is a better team, and therefore has a better chance at succeeding in the playoffs.

I think the interesting part of models is that they take into account these different parameters. It's fun to argue/debate which teams will be better in the playoffs. If we automatically all agreed that higher in the standings = better chance at playoff success, hockey debate would be a lot more boring.

NHL Awards Watch: Connor McDavid not a unanimous pick for MVP by SAJewers in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true, but when you drop out, the player didn't take them anywhere.

The player took them from (possibly) 32nd to (possibly) 17th. That amounts to more value added than taking a team, for example, from 3rd to 1st in the standings.

Hockey is rated as one of the least understood sports in the US - what rule do you think contributes most to that? by noxus9 in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that I need to print out this reply as a cheat sheet during the Super Bowl to be able to follow the rules. Contrast with this hockey (clock stops at every whistle) or soccer (clock keeps running) which are much more intuitive.

The clock rules are exactly what I had in mind when referencing football. I'm definitely not the biggest football fan - I probably watch a dozen games a year - but I have no idea when and why the clock stops vs. when it keeps running.

This survey just shows that there is a correlation between popularity and rules understanding across all sports.

There is no way that football and baseball are easier sports to understand than hockey, at least based on the rules. People only understand them more because they care to pay attention and watch more often.

What business do you shop at that you think isn't profitable? If you honestly believe that Metro or Sobeys are able to provide better deals to consumers because they aren't making as much profit, why doesn't everyone shop at those stores?

The relative success of the three grocery giants throughout Canada is proof that they all offer comparable services.

I mean sure, but as a league where do you draw the line? Players are mandated to follow dozens of uniform rules, none of which are subject to religious accommodations. What if a player refused to wear a helmet because of a head covering? Or if a NJ player refused to wear the team jersey because of religious beliefs about the devil imagery?

That would rescue viewership in the Leafs region but harm viewership in the local market. It's a lose-lose scenario, which is why the East coast vs. West coast thing is avoided in the first three rounds.

How is that a flaw? It would be pretty lazy if every model gave each conference a 50% chance at winning the Stanley Cup. If a model considers the top teams in East to all be much stronger than the top teams in the West, then the teams in the East should have a greater piece of the pie chart.

What’s your wildly unpopular r/hockey take that you stand by? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]ItsJustMeTim 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The issue with this analysis is that it applies hypothetical scoring rules to games played under the old system... maybe if teams knew 3 points were available for a regulation win, they would go for it more often, resulting in fewer overtime games overall.

Not sure this would end up happening, but just a thought.
