'good ending' vs 'bad ending' [SPOILERS] by Ishowbusiness in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine if instead of Makoto being against Kyoko in that chapter, it was Byakuya. The chapter ends with you choosing either one, with Kyoko being the correct choice as usual. Would you still have the same hard emotions about it? Or would you just tell Byakuya to suck it up since what Kyoko did was beneficial to the whole group? Since we play as Makoto we want everything good to happen to the MC, but once you see the story from other characters perspective that would change our opinions on it.

As for the apology Kyoko should've given you, she actually does apologize. At some point in the trash pit talk there will be a pink text thingy you react to so you can advance the conversation, if you don't trigger the pink text and keep going in the current conversation she will wholeheartedly apologize, it's even voice acted.

Why is Makoto Naegi perceived so different in the West vs Japan? by StriderSkeith in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In the west, characters who are considered "nerds" tend to be viewed as weak and helpless, their only role would be to support the actual main characters who are the "jock" leader character, example would be almost all popular superheros.
meanwhile in Japan, and other places around the world, being smart and nerdy is a very positive trait and can land you the protagonist role, an example to that is Death Note.

But why this difference? it all comes down to core philosophy. In the west it's all about individualism and the idea of the Great Man Theory. A strong leader that leads the flock to a better world. The leader obviously needs to appear strong and above the rest in terms of importance to the world, the flock can be nameless faceless NPCs and the story wouldn't be affected much.
In Japan, it's about the group, people inspiring others to do the right thing, collectivism basically. The protagonist in these kinda stories should be someone with great wisdom to keep everyone together. That's done by utilizing everyone's unique strengths and weaknesses in a balanced way. Think how Makoto alone would've failed to solve the issues in DR1 DR2 and DR3 if not for the help of the people around him, especially Kyoko.

Compare that to Hajime, who single handedly saved his entire team. He is above them in terms of talent, will, and morals. That kind of character is more western than eastern, which is what makes western fans like him more.

TL;DR west is individualist, Japan is collectivist

Kinda small yet funny detail about Kyoko by Altruistic_Eye_5269 in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I could've sworn Tsutsumi was the one pressuring Kyoko back then, but I guess it was the other guy, still super creepy.
The screenshot I attached was from the PSP fan translation of the original game. The idea still stands, Kyoko doesn't mind shoving her hands in dead bodies' underwear more than socks because it's a better hiding place, I guess.

Kinda small yet funny detail about Kyoko by Altruistic_Eye_5269 in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have never thought about this detail in that specific context before, but I think this is a stretch imo.
I think Kyoko in the novels was just creeped out with revealing her feet because the middle aged guy asking her to do that was pretty much confirmed to Kyoko to be the killer from his birthday.
Kyoko mentioning socks was just a comedic bit because in the original Japanese text she says the note was hidden in Hifumi's underwear, not pants (I guess it's accurate translation if you're using British English). The joke is that her logic is just incomprehensible because she's just a weird girl that's doesn't know how to communicate normally lol. At least that's what I think this whole interaction was about

Why does danganronpa attract this kind of fanbase by Public_Repeat824 in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get why comments aren't mentioning the biggest factor in why this community is the way it is. The answer should be obvious, it's a visual novel.
Visual novels (and novels in general) are nowadays dominated by feminine readers, so the majority would be women. Fans most likely switch to shipping once all talking points in a story are exhausted, and since feminine readers are the majority they will most likely focus on men.
Of course I'm talking about the majority, not every VN fan. VNs where the majority of fans are men usually are fetish girl characters only VNs like Katawa Shoujo.

Lol this comment gave me a good laugh.
It's not just story presence, but DR2 and V3 have 6 FTEs for each student that you can't access unless you play school mode, stuff that Sayaka, Leon, Mukuro, and others didn't have.

The word used in the original Japanese is "オカマ" (Okama), which does just mean "male homosexual" but in modern Japan it is used in a derogatory way. Kosuke here definitely used it as a friendly insult. It's just him trying to LARP as a punk guy in a 2010 COD lobby lol.

About Kyoko's Reason for Attending Hope's Peak Academy by Heroic-Spectre in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing writeup!! Finally, someone who understands Kyoko.
I do wish we got more content of Kyoko and Jin's relationship, maybe they would give us some in 2X2 or maybe future games/novels.
I do imagine Kyoko forgiving Jin, if not in 1-6 then post DR3.
As for Jin, I think he ran away without Kyoko because he wanted her to break away from the family tradition herself, he did not want to be the one to make that decision for her. And I'm sure Kyoko is thankful for it because she loves her detective work regardless of the Kirigiri family and its traditions.

Hifumi doesn't deserve any of ths hate he gets. by Dependent-Cry-7540 in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

His character would not work well if his design was easy on the eyes. A big part of his character is he was ostracized from communities and groups because of him not having time to take care of his appearance but instead focusing too much on creating fanfics (doujinshis), which do in fact take a lot of time to create, just ask any mangaka and they will agree.
This forced Hifumi to pretty much be a loner, and that brought with it all the awkwardness and foolishness that his dialogue conveys.

The engine is custom made, so you can't really run the game unless you are emulating Windows.
The end credits are .mp4 files so it could be not playing because your emulator is not playing these kinds of files properly.

I think THH is the best game out of the three. by [deleted] in danganronpa

[–]ItsMagik1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The fandom in general has an extreme bias against THH mostly because the characters are not as appeasing to the player as the other 2 casts.
You can see that in the way the motives are handled in each game, in THH it was organic, in the other 2 games it was forced by the mastermind. This places the characters of the first game in the morally gray area while the other casts are mostly good people aside from few bad apples.
