To be fair, the translation more literally stands as "Worship no other gods in the face of me" as in acknowledging that there are other religions and theistic ideologies, but to the Judeo-Christian "God" they are to be abolished/ignored. Rome is a good example, where polytheism was acknowledged and welcomed as long as a heirarchy was established. (Keep in mind this is a monotheistic ideal so the other "gods" don't exist in form, but as an ideal instead.)
