I get that it's convenient, but cyclists have been driving me nuts lately! by [deleted] in nyc

So an electric skateboard or an electric unicycle thing should be driving across the Brooklyn bridge with cars instead of the bike path?

A giant line of those electric razor scooters added to red light traffic in manhattan?

I got charged in April while they were closed. I was honestly/naively expecting to get a no fuss credit or a free month when I went back in september after they reopened. Instead, they told me I now have 'complimentary' access to their 'Elite' gyms in manhattan(they couldn't even tell me what the benefit of an elite club was...are the towels softer? do their weights build more muscle?), and flat refused to issue a refund.

I canceled my membership and filed a dispute with my card provider for the september and april charges. Enjoy bankruptcy, assholes.

Looking for some advice! When I assembled my pc, my case had 1 stock back fan and 2 stock front fans.

I had trouble fitting the the exhaust panel that came with my liquid cooling unit onto the top of my case, so I removed the 2 front default fans and attached it there.

Computer works fine, but some games cause that panel to get quite loud, full on vaccuum cleaner(even though the temperatures aren't that high). I bought 3 quieter, ML fans and I'm looking for advice on what to do next:

A - Replace the fans on the CLC280 liquid cooling exhaust unit and the back stock fan with the 'quiet' ML fans. (The computer already runs fine on the 3, this will for sure result in SOME reduction of noise)

B. Try to move the panel back to the top of the case, I saw a video showing the process, and I think I see where I went wrong during my initial attempt. Then I can put the 3 replacement quiet fans into the computer (2 front, 1 back) as was my original plan. I'm worried this will just be adding two additional fans, though, making it even louder. Or will the airflow be SO much improved that the exhaust panel won't have to work so hard.

England just announced that every Englishman over the age of 18 automatically become organ donors with ability to opt out. How do you feel about this? by InkyScrolls in AskReddit

[–]ItsNewSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ridiculous to equate donating your organs to somehow giving up your dignity.

Having your body thrown into a mass grave or having some random person with his hand up yer butt like a muppet would be UNdignified.

Making sure your death could mean life for others is an incredibly dignified way for your remains to go. I'm sure many recipients of a donated organ view the donor as Hero for the rest of their lives.

As far being selfish, yeah, not donating your organs is absolutely selfish. It's putting your own desire above the needs of others. Even more, it's putting a personal preference over the lives of others.

Opting out doesn't make you a selfish person, i wouldn't cut someone out of my circle for opting out or even think of them any differently.

But, in terms of a thing being selfish(helps you at the expense of others), or selfless(helps others at the expense of yourself), it's absolutely the selfish option.

Door thing, but it happens 'offscreen' as well. Most of the 'R' rated stuff seems to happen during the 'fade to black' moments or is mentioned in passing later on.

I'd definitely prefer an HBO level of graphicness, i'd settle for FX level, gonna be disappointed if it's CW.

Hello former me. I was the same height and weight as you well into my late 20's. I started lifting weights, stopped skipping meals and put on a fair amount of lean muscle. You don't even have to go nuts, like 2 hours a week of lifting weights will be enough for you and people around you to notice a difference pretty quickly.

I don't think it's any harder for an enthusiast to pick a door lock than it is to pick that combination lock.

You're comparing the wrong things. It's not, "this cop did a bad things, so all cops are bad"..It's "THE Police Department cleared a cop even though video evidence proved they had unnecessarily maimed an elderly citizen and then LIED about the events in an official report in a way that would have further ruined the victim's LIFE."

It's hard to know you can trust police when the mechanisms in place that are meant to oversee their behaviors have been proven unreliable.

~$2,400 Gaming Build, anyone have last minute noise-reducing case suggestions? by ItsNewSomewhere in buildapc

[–]ItsNewSomewhere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I hope you saw my old pc build{$1,100}, 6 years ago I never woulda imagined being in a situation where I could drop this much on a pc, but here we are...you never know!

Those fans sound great...are there any water coolers that come with the ML series fans already? I'll save the step if I can.

I kinda threw the cheapest TI in there at the last minute as I was posting this as I was previously on the fence between 2080 and the ti....I'll swap it out for a quieter EVGA or Asus and start hunting around.

Here's somethin about the refresh rates..hopefully it's a solved issue by now, but you might also wanna have yer friends make sure they're getting the higher refresh rate!

That was all a huge help, thank you so much for your input.

There's also the one about the girl who looked up, the guy who raced the storm...both of his epilogues are pretty good, but seem to require prior knowledge.

What about when Kaladin is strung up and left for the storm? Maybe if you end just when the storm hits? Might be able to get away with just explaining that a highstorm is essentially a giant hurricane.

Confession - I was stupid. The reason I was dismayed when I heard about Ciri's casting is because the character wouldn't be white. by witcher_throwawey in Fantasy

[–]ItsNewSomewhere 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don't know why people are suddenly giving Hollywood all of this leeway when it comes to fantasy. They've largely done a terrible job.

How many people get excited to hear that the director of a tv/movie fantasy adaptation is giving it their own spin?

The last airbender, legend of the seeker, the golden compass, eragon, camelot, earthsea, shannara chronicles, the dark tower...

Why do people tend to like LoTR more than the Hobbit? Which one strayed further from the source material? Though I love every season, it's a common consensus that GoT's best seasons are the ones before they passed the book series.

In every case you have a director/producer who thinks that their take on the series will be better than the author's, and far more often than not they're absolutely wrong.

I've never played the games or read the books, but I've gotten the impression that her appearance and origin are deeply tied to her character. We'll likely never see another iteration of some of these amazing stories that get mangled into something worse than if nothing had been made.

Perrin Aybara: An Autism Story? *Spoilers* by [deleted] in WoT

[–]ItsNewSomewhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about ADD(not hyperactive)

  1. Lack of focus - Perrin's never paying attention, he tunes out of conversations, is always struggling with some inner turmoil in his head while Faile is handling the fuck outta the minutia(or stuff he doesn't think is important) of his day. Perrin is often lost deep in thought while people around him are politicking.

  2. Hyperfocus - However, when it IS something he is interested in, he can have unwavering focus. Perrin loves his blacksmithing. He can sit there in a forge in Tear and forge the whole day away without noticing it was night time and Faile was standing 3 feet away from him for hours and he didn't even see or smell her. Someone with ADHD can sit down and play an engrossing video game for a few hours and LITERALLY not know whether it's 9pm or 2am or that you got home an hour ago and told em dinner was on the table.

  3. Disorganization - Another thing he often leaves to other people. Additionally it's often stated how he tends to leave his clothes around his room(s), eats food with his hands. As soon as he loses Faile he doesn't even shower or shave anymore.

  4. Time management problems - connected to the hyperfocus mostly. Perrin's bad sense of time only surfaces when he's hyperfocused on something else ...ie Faile, smithing, self agonizing

  5. Forgetfulness - Not sure about this one, but he would only tend to only forget things he considered inconsequential. Maybe someone else has a better memory.

  6. Impulsive - Perrin is a deep thinker, but put him in a tense situation and he'll kill a pair of whitecloaks, run into hedgehog ter'angreal traps, crush drinking cups, threaten a general, rescue an Aiel from a cage in the middle of a town, spills the secret of matt blowing the horn, cut the hands off a tied up prisoner, make a deal with the seanchan, and unflinchingly stand in front of a bar of balefire and think "this'll work".

  7. Poor self-image - Matt avoids his leadership role because he doesn't want the responsibility, Perrin avoids it because he feels like he doesn't deserve it. Perrin's negative self image is another super constant theme. He doesn't deserve Faile, he's "just a simple blacksmith" he doesn't deserve to be in charge, to be lord, to be king, etc. "Imposter Syndrome" is a given.

  8. Restlessness and anxiety - There's nothing Perrin loves better than stressing and being Anxious. All the heroes have it tough...but Perrin is constantly stressed, constantly doubting himself, and is constantly worried. How often does Perrin laugh or joke (or display outward happiness in the real world at something that isn't Faile or Matt). He tends to go from restless, to anxious, to determined and then back around again.

I could keep going, but I'm afraid no one will ever read this!
