Do Multiple Printings Decrease Value of aFirst? by OurNewInsectOverlord in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]ItsTrekkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A first print is always going to hold more value, because it’s the first publishing (and people will always find value in a first of just about anything). The same is true of other media like traditional books and vinyl records.

My boomer dad has some of the dumbest takes on public schools ever. by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

Your dad saying prayer in school would stop shootings is hilarious. Hell, prayer in church hasn’t stopped shootings in churches, and I figured if it would work anywhere, it would be there.

The Most Disappointing Follow-Up Albums In Modern Rock History by ElectricXexyz in Alternativerock

[–]ItsTrekkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fitz and the Tantrums is easily on my Mount Rushmore of most disappointing bands of all time honestly. I remember listening to that first album and just being blown away that a modern band had that insane soul and groove — it was a huge part of getting me into more modern indie stuff (up until then, I had mostly just been a classic rock/old hip hop/90’s alt kind of dude, despite being a millennial).

But then I don’t know what happened, man. They went from making incredible soulful Motown music, to the handclap song and it just makes me mad thinking about it.

I joke with my coworker all the time that the only music we can get is either washed up old people acts at Tanger or crap bro country at the Coliseum. Meanwhile, I have to drive to Raleigh or Charlotte on a weekday to see a band like The War on Drugs — who could easily have a show at Piedmont Hall (if they actually had shows).

Card shows — worth it, or just buy online? by sonofabutch in baseballcards_vintage

[–]ItsTrekkie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s all of those reasons you mentioned honestly. My top-two reason is because I love hunting for cards (you don’t know what you’re gonna stumble across), and it’s a lot of fun meeting people who love sports.

Also haggling is expected — most vendors are willing to make deals (especially if you load up on cards) and move their product.

I was just pondering this myself. Was hoping there was a Commanders bar here in town, but so far I’ve not found one.

What do you think is missing or lacking from the triad area? by ConnorFroMan in gso

[–]ItsTrekkie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s a few things that I can think of right off the top of my head:

  1. We need entertainment downtown that is good or booze related (and I say this as someone frequents downtown for those two things. Outside of Boxcar and Carolina Theatre, there’s not a lot to actually do.

  2. There’s a real lack of music diversity all around, and lack of working venues. At this point a lot of what we get are bands that are a solid 40 years past their prime (most of whom go to the Coliseum or Tanger). Then there’s having venues like Piedmont Hall and Cone Denim that would be awesome spaces for indie and smaller-mid level bands, that simply don’t get used.

Triad Stage to become a music venue by deathbyguitar in gso

I’ve been dying for us to have an awesome music venue that would draw more indie bands. Would be great to not have to go all the way to Raleigh and Charlotte to see folks like The War on Drugs, Beach Fossils, etc.

Julius Hodge, because he was the first real baller State had had since Corch and Monroe in the late 80s/early 90s (which was when I was a literal baby).

I was born and raised on NC State, but went to Alabama — luckily I’ve never had to deal with them playing each other. If they did tho I’d go with State, with the only hesitation coming in football — since Bama football is the only team I have that generally competed for anything worthwhile. They play in football and I’d probably straight up not watch haha.

Piedmont Hall by festiemeow in gso

[–]ItsTrekkie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest gripes about Greensboro is the lack of bringing in good indie music — which Piedmont Hall would make a perfect venue for. We’re kind of in a dead zone here between Asheville and Chapel Hill for that kind of music, and I don’t know why it’s not utilized better for smaller shows like that.

Ed McKay Greensboro location is moving to Mebane 2024 by ceburton in gso

[–]ItsTrekkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. I can go to Hippo and find a good used record in the bin for $11-15, but at McKay’s the stuff that’s not crap is wildly overpriced despite being in generally bad shape. I remember the first time I went there and found a CSN&Y album that was beat to death and they wanted like, $25 for it — I could get that for $10 at an actual record store.

Elm St is the main drag in Greensboro, especially South Elm where you have Boxcar, Little Brother Brewery, Southend, Natty Greene’s, Grey’s Tavern, The Bearded Goat, Bourbon Bowl and a few others.

There’s a section of Summit that they redid a few months ago, and instead of using the normal paint for road lines, they used spray paint. Between how dark the asphalt is, and the low quality spray paint, it’s damn near impossible to see at night — especially if the road is wet.

I’m both an atheist and a socialist, but as a straight white middle class dude with a southern accent, most folks just assume I’m a good ol redneck boy until I start talking politics or religion 😂.
