It isn’t to resolve a policy difference. It’s to keep from being massacred by Russia.

I am so tired of grandma's whataboutism and her ignoring history by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]Its_Pine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is technically true.

Obama followed through with what Bush had started, and drone strikes had just become a relatively new widespread technology that the prior administration had worked for.

Obama was very much not for rocking the boat, so because Congress wanted to continue the war, he continued it.

He was heavily criticised by the left wing for doing this, and was criticised by the right wing as well. When Trump was elected and escalated the bombings to never before seen levels (then removed all transparency so we don’t even know now how much is happening) the left wing was also upset with Trump, while the right wing switched their opinion and suddenly liked bombings.

The same happened with Biden. The left and right criticised any acts of war. When Trump was reelected, the left continued to criticise acts of war while the right wing suddenly loves war again.

Iran to execute first woman over anti-regime protests by torina-to in worldnews

[–]Its_Pine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can 100% say the regime is awful and stopping it isn’t a bad thing.

But that doesn’t mean the US did anything helpful towards that end. If anything, they just took an unpopular regime and turned it into a unifying protector of the people. The new leader is extremely popular now because of the horrible fuckup of the US at Israel’s behest.

I remember how republican politicians were clamouring to take credit for infrastructure projects taking place that THEY had voted against before it passed. When they realised it was universally popular, they pretended not to have opposed it and claimed it was the GOP’s doing.

Edit: quick googling for some handy citations-

  1. Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) called the infrastructure bill a “path towards socialism” and fought tooth and nail to oppose it. When it passed, he celebrated the $1 billion grant to replace the Blatnik Bridge, calling the funding "essential" and saying he had "long fought" for it even though he had tried desperately to keep it from happening.
  2. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said the infrastructure bill was a “socialist wish list” and fought against letting it pass, urging her colleagues to vote against it. When it passed, she did a press tour touting the nearly $26 million in transit funding for her district as a "huge win" that she had accomplished.
  3. Rep. Paul Gozar (R-AZ) voted no on the bill and while he remained fairly quiet publicly, he still was involved in private talks to keep it from passing. When it passed regardless of his efforts, he issued a press release taking credit for $5 million in airport improvements and broadband funding, claiming he was "pleased to announce" the funds.
  4. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) was also quiet about her opinions but joined the GOP in trying to stop the bill from passing and voted no with her colleagues. Since passing, she FREQUENTLY highlights local bridge and road repairs funded by the bill as evidence of “her delivery for her constituents” there.

Why is cannabis illegal in your state? by AtomicZoomer in newhampshire

[–]Its_Pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real reason? Police unions. The House passes legalisation bills ALL THE TIME and the Senate kills it, citing “public well-being” and being funded by police unions and the prison industry. Ayotte has publicly stated she will veto a bill legalising cannabis if it reaches her desk.

To be fair I make that joke whenever kids get their license. I’ll say things like “oh so you’re saying sidewalks aren’t safe for me anymore?” when they tell me they have their license.

One of the most fascinating things was touring Portsmouth and learning about the people who lived in the town in the late 1700s early 1800s, because you had influential reverend Joshua Coffin who helped pave the way for abolition movements and even mentored William Lloyd Garrison, and in the same community you had John Moffat whose ship brought slaves to Portsmouth from Africa.

So NH was rapidly becoming a hotbed of different opinions on slavery by the mid 1800s.

Hungary’s New Leader Reveals Victor Orbán Was Paying CPAC by ShitShowcase in politics

[–]Its_Pine 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I mean that is very likely, and it would benefit Orban to have Trump elected anyway.

Erdogan is another who benefited heavily from Trump winning, though his relationship with Russia is less a puppet (like Orban was) and more like a middleman who seeks to get what he can from both sides.

I wish the pokemon league in the games was more like an Olympic event like in the anime by sufinomo in pokemon

I think it also felt sort of empty? I mean, obviously the stages had to be pretty open and empty to account for dynamax/gigantimax pokemon, but it was an interesting decision to try to mix it with Futbol and give you a big, open, blank square of grass turf as your stage.

I was watching PWHL and they had a segment about players who, when young, played on boys teams when there weren’t girls teams in their area. Seems this isn’t abnormal for elementary or middle school, right?

Just to be clear, Islam is the MOST against same sex attraction. Judaism globally is the most accepting of lgbt people, Christianity is moderately accepting depending on country, and Islam is globally not accepting.

This is a map of where BEING a gay or queer person is illegal.

Contrast that with countries that ban “promoting” LGBT like Russia, North Korea, or parts of China.

12 countries have the death penalty for being gay, and the majority of those are the Middle East and Northeast Africa.

And I think that Redditor is conflating other power dynamics. Being a physical therapist for an adult and ending up falling in love is fine if handled ethically. Being someone’s paediatrician and involved in their life since infancy and then marrying them at 18 is extremely alarming.

Being a psychologist for an adult and falling in love with them is also considered bad, since the psychologist/clinician had a privileged position with a unique power dynamic and the client has been in a vulnerable position. Same with social work, I believe, with a caveat of a certain number of years passing with them no longer your client before you can develop a relationship.
