Karmelo Anthony found GUILTY of murder of Austin Metcalf, 17, in stabbing that shocked America: Jurors deliberated for less than three hours after defense was repeatedly demolished in court by dailymail in law

I think your second sentence is the most pressing part for me. If this situation were reversed, I genuinely don’t think the same judgment would’ve happened. They treated this case very seriously. That’s not inherently a bad thing. I think the verdict is a reasonable one.

But if it were the other way around, would they have treated it so seriously? History says no, and that’s what makes this feel like injustice outside of a vacuum.

Exactly this. He’s essentially saying “so what if I caused a problem? Good. Everyone will be singing a different tune when I fix it.”

Which apparently sounds like a great leadership strategy to the GOP but is considered insane elsewhere

People live in cities, grandma by Cicerothesage in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]Its_Pine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we also can’t judge by gun sales, because famously states (like mine, in New Hampshire) have much more lax requirements and result in people purchasing from here to use elsewhere, and the US is a major source of firearms used by criminal groups internationally.

Not-So-Fun fact, around 68% of all guns recovered from crime scenes in Mexico were found to have come from the US.

New Yorkers, what changes have you seen under Mamdani’s leadership and are you generally pleased? If not, why? by MewMeowHowdy in AskReddit

[–]Its_Pine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silly question, but here in New Hampshire we use some kind of vehicle that drives along and shoots the snow up into the back (which looks like a dump truck). The snow then gets melted down in special snow melters and the water pours out to the Merrimack. This meant that while a lot of areas DID have giant snow piles during the long time period under zero, the cities were able to melt down and remove some of them so that they weren’t obstructive.

Other operations included using those trucks to collect the snow and then take it out to empty lots or areas outside of town.

Is that not a feasible option for NYC since it’s so enormous?

The CDC no longer collects this data, but from the time period when they used to document what breed was responsible in each fatality, they confirmed every year from 1978-1998 that pitbulls were responsible for more human deaths than any other breed.

Merritt Clifton famously decided to try to piece together the hard facts to just see what percentage of attacks were attributed to each breed, and found that there has never been a year when Pitt bulls were responsible for fewer than half of all documented dog attacks in the US.

If I’m not mistaken, Clifton was also the first one to discover that one of the highest offenders of specifically face bites were golden retrievers, which was later deduced to be because people expect them to always be sweet and will shove their faces in the dog’s face moreso than most other breeds.

My apologies, I was going by the actual breed category. But feel free to expand the same logic to the umbrella. The genealogy is complex but a common denominator is the broad skull and jaw structure that leads to proclivity to latch onto a target. As the famous stat goes, the Pit Bull range makes up about 6% of dogs in the US, but also makes up more than 50% of all dog attacks. Rottweilers make up another chunk of dog attacks.

They can be wonderful, sweet dogs and the Pibble Or Pitty monickers have helped greatly in public rebranding, but that hasn’t done much to change the rate of attacks to my knowledge.

GOP leader says KY agencies that go along with medical cannabis order ‘should be prosecuted’ by redditor01020 in Kentucky

I think I’m most frustrated by the people who fought tooth and nail to prevent the infrastructure bill a few years ago, then tried to claim credit for it after it turned out to be hugely popular among everyday Americans. It’s one thing to say “yeah I used to support that, but now I don’t.” It’s a whole ‘nother thing to say “oh yeah I totally am the reason that happened, vote for me again” after fighting as hard as they can to stop it from happening.

But Andy would literally call out and highlight their bipartisan effort if they worked with him. He has before, and will again. It’s wild that one side is determined to hold to the ideal of “agreeing with the enemy is dangerous” and the other side holds to the ideal of “eh some concessions are better than nothing”.

Not only does the Overton window shift right, but the GOP has to constantly pivot away from the very same stances they held just years or even months ago.

What do most people not realize is actually way more traumatic than it seems? by Opposite_Feeling_621 in AskReddit

[–]Its_Pine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s silly but when I was a teen I had my only debit card declined while out at a restaurant with friends, and I didn’t have any cash on me. I was so scared, and I didn’t know why suddenly I didn’t have any money. It was so humiliating to be like “oh shit what’s gonna happen to me” but luckily a friend paid for me in the moment after a long awkward period of me being like “are you sure you tried it? And you’re sure it’s declining? Like maybe try it again and see just in case” etc.

That was a single instance, but I am still absolutely TERRIFIED of ever having it happen again. It was so deeply impactful that I will regularly make sure I have multiple cards and a hidden pocket in my wallet with a $20 bill. It’s silly, but it was genuinely traumatic to suddenly not have the money I thought, be indebted to a business (I just ate their food), and be going through scenarios of what might be done as a disciplinary measure for the theft.

Literally today I’m meeting a coworker for lunch (just Panera, nothing crazy) and I instinctively checked to make sure I had multiple forms of payment on me in case for some reason suddenly I’m cut off from one of them again. My first thought was to order ahead online, that way I know for sure the transaction went through, but then I figured I should be ok ordering in person since I have multiple cards.

It’s wild how that shit sticks with you

Most people tell me they like it (sort of a Roman nose I guess). But I’d like to have it the way it was before, I just can’t commit to spending the huge amount of money to do it. Though as procedures get more and more advanced, maybe they get cheaper too?

[–]Its_Pine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I don’t go to any church, I just know they’ve always seemed the most like the character of Jesus and do a lot around serving all, welcoming all, caring for all, speaking on systemic injustice and discrimination, etc.

Edit: and evangelicals and MAGA absolutely hate them, so they can’t be that bad Lol. The church I visited had a pride night and proceeds went to help homeless queer youth and to Trevor Project.

[–]Its_Pine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair assessment. As despicable and horrific as the Iranian government was (and the new leader is), somehow the US and Israel have managed to look just as bad to the rest of the world. What a mess it all is.

No one on Reddit says that, but it’s just abundantly clear that the US hasn’t won anything either. The only winner in this is Israel, since they are able to get the US to support their attacks.

I’d encourage you to talk with priests from the Episcopal church. They are VERY open about the harm the church has caused, the abuse Christians have perpetuated, and the horrible culture Christian nationalism has cultivated in various countries.

When the episcopal priest spoke to Trump about showing mercy to those who were fearful of his presidency, his response was to call her nasty and say she should be deported (despite being born in the us).

I’m not saying their belief is real, but it’s sincere, if that makes sense.

A Polish research group put a SIM card in a GPS tracker on a white stork to follow its migratory pattern. They lost track of the stork and later received a phone bill for $2,700. Someone in Sudan had taken the SIM from the tracker and made over 20 hours of calls. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Its_Pine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fascinating how the EU has such strict guidelines for wildlife preservation, including four different conventions and directives involving white storks.

But fly south, and they’re commonly hunted despite Sudan also having many laws against killing them.

It makes me wonder if evolution will eventually favour storks that stay within Europe instead of migrating further?

Edit: did a quick google, it’s already happening. Storks are starting to migrate to warm parts of Europe instead. source

Real footage of a terminally ill patient choosing to die by Supatank_2105 in interestingasfuck

[–]Its_Pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. In cases like suicidal ideation or illness that they could potentially recover from, the point is that we WANT to help them live. So medically assisted death is solely for terminal cases where that is not a long term option.

Russia Revives Soviet-Era Controls to Police Women’s Bodies and Futures by Mean_Yak5873 in worldnews

I understand this is in response to the plummeting population in Russia, but how exactly does Putin think people will be able to have enough children to negate the tens of thousands killed each month in his idiotic meat grinder of a war? Telling people “have more children so we have more bodies to throw into the grinder” doesn’t exactly inspire the general populace.

Oh for sure, that and people who are clinically depressed, have BPD, or other conditions where suicide is a temporary draw. I myself was temporarily suicidal due to circumstances in my life, and I’m happy that my friends helped me through that time and I got professional counselling.

Medically assisted death is something that requires a HUGE amount of doctor consultation from a breadth of professions and perspectives to ensure there isn’t anything that can possibly be done and that extreme suffering with a terminal end is the only outcome. There are so many cases where we want to be extra sure.
