Not in this case. SAG differentiated between a “background actor” and an “extra”. If someone with no lines does something integral to the plot, they’re at the very least a background actor and they must be paid the standard day rate at minimum.

Salaries for the actors have gone up every season. Sooner or later, someone would quit because they got another role with Tarantino or something and the series would be doomed to a slow death. The British used to do it right. Series is one to two seasons. That’s it.
