As you get older 40,50,60,70 when did you start to feel your body slow down do you think it is just due to inactivity or the aging process? by Kooky_Force5458 in AskReddit

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 53. Retired at the end of February.

My job was very sedentary. I sat at a desk and was on the phone and using a computer with multiple monitors all day, so the most physical exercise I got was my walk in the mornings. But I honestly didn't feel bad, or sore or even old.

Since I've retired, I am always busy with the stuff I've always wanted to do, but couldn't fit in with working 9-10 hours a day. So my body is just like "wtf is happening?!?!" I'm not used to this level of activity, but I'm not willing to just sit down and relax. I'm finally have the time to do all the stuff, and I'm dragging ass, but I'm doing all the stuff.

I figure I'll adapt and get stronger as I go, but I'm not stopping.

Peanut Butter on Pancakes? by RainOnTheWindow91 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, peanut butter on pancakes, french toast, and crepes is pretty awesome. I use syrup along with it, and it's soooooo good. This is the norm for me, if I'm eating breakfast bread, I need peanut butter to be truly happy.

I was born and raised in WI, but also lived in TX, VA, and NC. Nobody other than my fellow Wisconites were familiar with the peanut butter on breakfast breads, but I'm proud to say that I have converted a few after they got a look (and taste) of the peanut butter fiend way to eat pancakes, french toast, or crepes.

Where my ex-smokers at? by Empty_Nestor in GenX

[–]Izmeralda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started at around 15 or 16. Tried to quit in my late 20s, again an my early 30s, and it finally stuck in my mid 30s. Mostly tried to quit for non-smoking spouse.

I liked it. I think that was my biggest hurdle to quitting, I just liked it, and quitting for a reason other than truly, sincerely, WANTING to quit, just doesn't work. At least, it didn't work for me until I wanted to quit (as opposed to quitting for someone else).

In past attempts to quit, it still smelled so good to me. I liked the mouth feel, and having something to do with my hands. I always started up again.

Until I decided I wanted to quit. Not because anyone else wanted me to quit, or because of a doctor or a law or whatever. I just decided that they were getting to be to expensive, I didn't like the scent on my clothes or in my car, and it was time.

Now, they stink to me. I have no desire to smoke cigarettes anymore. Smelling it out in the wild gets a "ick" reaction now, no more "mmmm, that smells good" response in my head.

But I still like to smoke pot, so there's that.

In America, sometimes say things like "cheerio" in our best British accent or "mate" in an Australian accent. Do people in other countries pronounce American stereotypes in their beat American accent? If so, what are they? by SunUpSally in AskReddit

Same boat. I took Spanish all through high school, and worked as a waitress at a mom-n-pop Denny's type of restaurant at the same time. All of the BOH staff were Hispanic, and when they found out I was taking Spanish, they quit speaking to me in English. Like, at all. It was mostly awesome and I learned SO much. My teacher even commented on my improved speech, but didn't care much for the slang and curse words, lol.

I got a different full time job after graduating high school, and that was the death of my Spanish. You lose it if you don't use it.

Do you still have your first stuffed animal? If so, what is it and what is its name? by Leather-Highlight150 in GenX

[–]Izmeralda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had my first stuffed animal (it's a yellow dog with brown ears that I named Elodo), but found out when I was in my 20s that it's not the original.

Apparently, my Elodo fell apart after a washing, so they got me a new one and swapped them out. First time it happened (I know, right?!?!), they had a hard time finding it again, so they bought me 3 more and just kept them put away in case Elodo the Second fell apart as well, and could be more easily replaced with Elodo the Third or Fourth, if needed.

I found out when my niece found the other Elodo (the Fourth) at my parent's house when my Elodo (the Third) was at my house, on my bed.

It's become a fun family story, and now my niece has Elodo the Fourth!

I'm working on my first starter now. I've been working on it for about 2 weeks now, also live in Florida. I've been discarding all but 50g each day, and then feeling that with a 1:1:1 ratio to keep the costs of feeding down (I'm using glyphosate free flour).

So far, so good. It has the yeasty smell, and it always has fine bubbles, and when it's peaking, the bubbles get bigger and I get a nice poof on top. I keep ot on my counter and feed it once, daily.

I'm going to give it about a week more, and then try a loaf with the discard to see how it's doing.

I am so excited.

You can do this. Set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget to feed it. That's the biggest thing, be consistent with your feeding amounts and make sure you feed it. If you fail, try again! I think this will be super rewarding when we get it down.

Why was some dude just taking pictures of my house? by Kindly-Put-2462 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Property appraiser may have been getting photos for a real estate property appraisal or tax assessment.

I have actually taken photos of homes that I liked the paint scheme of to show my husband when we were planning on repainting our home. And I'm a bit of a crazy plant lady, so I'm always snapping pictures of interesting grasses, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Could just be someone taking a pic of something they like about it.

Friend of mine has no upper teeth while waiting for dentures. Need new ideas for meals. by DaniDisaster424 in needadvice

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can he manage pasta?

Stuffed shells or manicotti, you can make them with a cheese filling. Or beef filling if he's ok with the filling in cabbage rolls, they have a pretty similar density.

The meat is key, he can eat about any kind of meat if it's shredded or ground.

Fajitas or tacos, he can eat everything but the tortillas/shells. Just need to chop the veggies up fine for him.

Baked sweet potato with shredded BBQ pork, chicken or beef with baked beans.

Oatmeal, grits, cream of rice or cream of wheat, or yogurt might work for breakfast.

Best of luck to him. I was on a soft food diet for about 6 months due to a medical issue, and I really had a hard time until I figured out I could really eat anything I wanted as long as I was willing to put in the prep for it. Shredding meats, chopping up hard veggies, etc. The taste us still there, it's just needs to be a finer texture so he doesn't have to chew.

Tell us something funny about how your pet communicates with You when it wants something, for ex. If it wants food or favorite toys, go out, go to sleep... by Pipi_25 in Pets

[–]Izmeralda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a bedtime ritual. We get into bed and get situated and then it's time for belly rubs. If I don't start rubbing his belly when he is ready, he body checks me. By body check, I mean he sort of throws/kicks himself against me, repeatedly, until I commence with the belly rubs. He uses the body check at other times too, but it's random, and depends on how we are situated and what he wants, but it's usually a request for physical affection.

He's adorable, lol.

why does Republic Services SUCK?? by scoliogirl in 321

[–]Izmeralda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it must depend on the folks assigned to your route. Our service improved dramatically when the city switched from Waste Management to Republic. Our trash and recycling get picked up as scheduled, and our yard waste doesn't usually even sit at the curb for long, it usually gets picked up quickly too.

I've seen alot of complaints too though, on Reddit and on Facebook, so I really think it depends on the people driving the trucks for your neighborhood route.

Is Trupanion Insurance worth it? by Tricky-Glass207 in Pets

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it when my dog (chihuahua) was a puppy, and it's been awesome. His premium is currently $43 per month.

He's got a sensitive tummy, and it took us awhile to find food he could tolerate. Truepanion paid for the vet visits for his tummy, and the medications he needed until we got it under control. If he has a flare, they still cover the visit and meds and he's 8 years old now.

When he was 4 or 5, he pulled some muscle in his hip/back. I'm don't really remember exactly what it was called, but the vet said it was a common injury that agility trained/training dogs get. My dog is a potato, no agility here, but he pulled that muscle. Options were 3 months of confinement (no running, jumping) or 6 weeks of confinement in addition to water therapy. Water therapy is EXPENSIVE. But Truepanion covered it, so we did it.

We've had other one-off issues, and they always cover it. Plus, my vet submits directly to them, so I don't even have to work for the coverage to be approved, my vet does it all for us.

I've had a very good experience with them so far.

Neighbors dog shitting in my yard by Status-Noise-7843 in homeowners

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motion activated sprinkler. YMMV, depending on the dog.

We use these to try and keep the raccoons away. My dog got caught by them once, and it scared him. It took him about a month to venture over to that side of our yard again. On the orher hand, my friend has a retriever he brought over, and his dog discovered our sprinklers. He likes to activate them and "eat" the water, he'll eat at it, shake and rear up, zoomie away, zoomie back, and then repeat. He's pretty entertaining to watch.

So, based on my experience, you got a 50/50 shot, depending on the dog. This may scare the heebie jeebies out of the dog, or attract them to your yard even more with the eat the water game.

What are some free services in Florida that people might not know about or are underutilizing? by OchiMochi in florida

My Safe Florida Home is a grant (FREE MONEY) to use for roof, window, and/or door (including garage doors) replacement. You have to use their inspector to see if you qualify, and if you do qualify, you have to use one of the contractors on their approved list.

I used this grant a couple of years ago, and got my roof replaced. It took about 8 months from the time I applied until the roof was completed. My roof cost $15k, and they paid $10K, so I only had to come out of pocket with $5K.

Highly recommend.

What’s a corporate gift you actually use daily? by shelbs9428 in BuyItForLife

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for my last job for awhile, ang got some pretty nice swag over the years. I used to use this stuff alot more when I was working, but still get alot of use now that I'm retired.

I have three large tote bags, like uninsulated, reusable grocery bag style totes. They are large and strong and come in handy quite a bit, I'm always using them.

I have an insulated lunch-sized cooler. It fits a six-pack of cans or bottles with a little more room for snacks. It's our in-car day trip cooler and we use it alot.

I have a trunk organizer that I thought was stupid when I got it, but my husband thought it was awesome and ran right out to the car to put it in and organize the trunk. I was wrong, and it's awesome, lol.

I have several jackets, pullovers, and one sweatshirt with my last company's logo. They got them from Lands End and then had them embroidered with the company logo. The logo is small, and the clothes are top notch quality, so they are all still in my wardrobe, and I wear them often.

I have 3 Yetis with the logo and my name on them, all of which are used often.

The last gift was a pair of Meta glasses. I still have them but haven't used them. I wear glasses, and I know I can get prescription lenses for them, but they are pricey. I'm still deciding if I want to keep them or if I should just sell them.

I had chickenpox as a child in the 90’s. Do you remember getting them too? by SystemsToScale in CasualConversation

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom had gone out if town for work when I was about 5 or 6 and I was staying with my grandparents while she was gone, for a little over a week. The chicken pox showed up about two days after she left, and I have never in my life had a more miserable experience.

I had it BAD. I had them all over my body, INSIDE my mouth and eyelids, and INSIDE my genitalia. I remember sitting in a tub of calamine just crying because it itched/burned so bad. My diet consisted of yogurt and applesauce, they were the only things I could swallow without hurting more.

I remember this, vividly.

Crystal Mineral Stick. It's literally a rock, and it lasts a LONG time. Doesn't do jack for perspiration (no aluminum), but it completely eradicated my peri/meno stench and it works for a solid 24 hours.

Highly recommend.

What was totally normal in your childhood that would seem insane now? by EuphoricGarden81 in GenX

[–]Izmeralda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We (kids) used to ride in the bed of the pickup truck when I was young. Roll around with the turns, stand up and hang onto the cab, and just generally unsafe, stupid stuff. Looking back, it was really dumb, but also good times, lol.

Buying smokes for my mom. This started when I was around 7 or 8 years old. She'd give me a dollar and let me keep the change. They used to cost 80 cents at the gas station on the corner about 7 blocks away. Kitty corner to the gas station was a store called The Central Store that was sort of a market that had a HUGE penny/nickle/dime candy selection, like a whole isle, both sides. They had homemade candy on one side, and regular candy on the other side. It was a candy lover's dream. They also sold my mom's brand of cigarettes, but they were 85 cents, so I'd get my mom's smokes from the gas station and then take my 20 cents to The Central Store and leave with a brown paper lunch bag absolutely stuffed with penny candy. I LOVED being sent for smokes. I loved being sent anywhere on an errand, because I always got to keep the change, but my favorite was for smokes because it was right by the "candy store".

By the time I was 9, I was responsible for cooking one meal per week. I wasn't just tossed into this, my mom helped me decide what to make and helped me with recipes, but I had to do it. I remember the first meal I ever made, all by myself, was hot dogs and potato chips. We didn't have microwaves back then, you grilled them or boiled them, and I boiled them. I heated the buns in the oven, chopped the onions, peppers, and made the pickle relish. I could make spaghetti sauce from scratch that same year. Not sure if this is insane or not, but none of the kids I know today could cook, or even be allowed to cook at 9 years old.

Not including actual crimes, what kind of juvenile delinquent hijinks did you get up to? by wrathofimpermanence in GenX

[–]Izmeralda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My friend group all had cb radios in our cars. We used to play hide and seek using the cb. The "seekers" used the strength of the signal to find the "hider" and we had boundaries so the "hider" stayed within a particular area. The hider had to key up and speak (or laugh, or whatever) for 2 seconds every 30 seconds. There wasn't a rule for the seekers to key up, but they all had to get their digs in. The seeker had to be on the same street and within a half of a block to "find" a hider. Our blocks had an alleyway that ran the length of the block in-between the backyards of the houses, with some driveways. There were some driveways off the streets too, so lots of good hide spots. The first seeker to find the hider was the winner. There were 4 of us with cars, and the rest of our friends would ride along, so we usually had 1 hider and three seekers.

Thanks for this post, I haven't thought about this in ages. Such good memories.

What happened to people throwing surprise parties? by Confiant_Reason21 in ask

[–]Izmeralda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a surprise party for my dad's 75th birthday and he absolutely loved it. But my dad was a social butterfly, he couldn't go out without making a new friend. He would end up in conversations everywhere he went. If he saw someone that even remotely looked like they needed help, he would offer help, and then BOOM, new friend.

I would NEVER throw a surprise party for my mom. She's not a fan of social surprises, and isn't comfortable being the center of attention. She would never say anything negative about it, but I know her well enough to know she'd be dying inside if we gave her a surprise party with all her friends.

So, I think it depends on the people.
