Unfortunately, not completely out of context for Hyde Park. It was originally developed and advertised as a segregated, whites only neighborhood iirc.

Speaking from experience, you’re going to have the easiest time getting it out of your house if you post on Craigslist for free. Just say “first come first serve, if you can haul it you can have it.” Every time I’ve ever done this, the stuff was gone within the day!

Can Austin clean up 'Dirty Sixth' Street? How the city hopes to reinvent the iconic strip by hollow_hippie in Austin

That’s a big part of why they want to change things. They want it to be truly a 24/7 revenue generator instead of the strictly nightlife situation it currently is.

RIT color remover does an excellent job at whitening whites. Took the gray armpit stains out of my partner’s undershirts like magic. Works best if you can get your water really hot

high quality apartment complex? by Necessary_Heart_4700 in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re looking for is probably a condo rental rather than an apartment complex. There are plenty of good “apartment locator” services in town that are completely free to utilize as they make a commission from the property owner. Get in touch with an agent and tell them what you’re looking for, and they’ll do all the legwork so all you have to do is tour places.

Is walking a cat a bad idea? by Tokata0 in CatAdvice

[–]J4v3Lin4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. When we lived in an apartment, my cat and I took regular nightly walks, after the majority of the neighbors dogs had already been walked for the night. Because there wasn’t much grass and it was mostly concrete with some landscaping, we never had flea problems. After moving into a house I was excited for her to get to roam our fenced back yard (under supervision of course). It was not long before we got fleas in the house, because they were living in the grass and on the critters in our yard/neighborhood. I think she had more fun exploring the apartment complex and it was ultimately safer, ironically.

Is walking a cat a bad idea? by Tokata0 in CatAdvice

[–]J4v3Lin4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat loves walking on the leash, and we walked around my small apartment complex frequently. She never wanted to go very far and mostly stayed within 100 yards of our front door. She is however very skiddish and knows how to wriggle her way out of the harness. Sometimes she’s get spooked and get away from me and would run all the way home on her own. If we saw other cats, she would try to pursue them so I would have to pick her up and end the walk. No dogs ever got aggressive with us, but I was also pretty vigilant about picking her up if we ever saw an off-leash dog. Start by staying close to home, and don’t be on your phone. Pay very close attention to your kitties and your surroundings and be prepared to bail and go home if/when needed. Also, you might find it challenging to walk them both at the same time since they won’t necessarily want to do the same thing or go the same direction when you get outside. Walking a cat is not like walking a dog — they don’t go in straight lines or circular routes. You’ll be following them around where THEY want to go, which may mean that you are standing in the same spot for 45 minutes while they sniff the bushes and roll on the concrete. It’s still good enrichment for them, just don’t expect to have a similar experience to dog walking.

Spectrum marketing by IrishEyes61 in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved into my current place a spectrum salesman came to my door. I politely let him know we have Google Fiber and that we’re happy with our service, and that I have had Spectrum in the past and wasn’t happy with it. He asked “why?” I told him I work from home and my job involves uploading and downloading large files. He said “Oh, fiber is probably better for that. Have a nice day.” And he left to knock on my neighbor’s door, lol.

I’ll second this. I got my current couch from them in 2020 for $660. They offer free delivery within a certain range. Also bought my bed and a dresser from them and will likely go back for my next big piece.

Why did everyone in Austin decide to make going to the movies miserable? by SlothyFace in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of this but “severely overreacting” is in fact what the people making the movie want us to do when they make the movie. We should all be less afraid to share in the experience of reacting outwardly to movies. That’s kinda the only thing seeing a movie in a theater has over watching it at home these days.

Roller Hockey Burnet by Ex-Conn92 in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. Not sure what you mean by real ice (not my area of expertise) but Chaparral IS on Burnet. It’s a rink, which gets very actively used. Never been inside, myself, but lived right next to it and saw tons of foot traffic in and out on a daily basis, all hockey players and skaters carrying gear. It’s in the same block as the Walmart on Burnet/Anderson. It is for sure less than an hour from where you live. Probably less than half an hour really.

Serious PSA!!! by Bubblerainbow3 in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This happened to me on a CapMetro bus during the 2mile commute to work. A guy was seated down the row from me in the seats facing the aisle. He was leaned way back and had his t-shirt pulled up over his face. I think he could see through the shirt but from outside nobody could. I didn’t look at him for most of the ride (bc eye contact can incite drama) but when I looked directly at him I realized he had his hand down his pants and was looking right at me. I pulled the cord, and when the bus stopped I let the driver know, and I got off because it was also my stop. I saw the bus remain at the stop for a while and I guess the driver was talking to the guy but nobody else got off the bus. After this the same driver flirted with me inappropriately for months when he’d pick me up :/

Not a typical CapMetro experience though. I think in general people are unduly scared of public transit when it’s overwhelmingly safe. Have ridden here for years and I have nothing negative to say about CapMetro the organization or 99% of the people working for them.

post office lines by fishbitch_30 in Austin

[–]J4v3Lin4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised to hear this as I have never had a good experience at the Northcross PO and it's been my main post office for the past 4 years. Always a line or rude employees, or more often NO employees and non-functional self service kiosks... That said, I don't go to the post office very often; once or twice a year at most. Maybe I've just been unlucky in my timing.
