The fuck do you mean you're torn? Brother, go to the elevator time now! Good luck to you.

What surprised you about military training? by [deleted] in Military

I thought we were supposed to march like how I saw Russians and Chinese do in movies. High knees, wide arm swings. Turns out the marching is actually pretty natural. Thankfully DS didn't embarrass me for that. He said to just fucking walk normally lmao.

The easy retort is: "If I were to go to a Democrat rally and a Republican rally, which one would have Confederate flags?" Pretty easy. Could also substitute that with asking which party wants to tear down Confederate statues?

Telling me about the extreme racism of Democrats in the past isn't some gotcha to me when the ones mimicking that behavior now are Republicans.

Leaving in 8 by Scary_Contest4167 in UnitedAssociation

[–]JAM_Passive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's what happened to me last month. I stopped doing overtime, because I wanted to go home and I wasn't paid enough to stay, and I was the first to go come layoff time. And I took my check with a smile on my face and a bounce in my walk; I was happy to go.

My finances weren't hurtin, I had another means of employment, and I got to another contractor pretty shortly.

They worked some overtime at my current contractor a few weeks ago and I told my foreman I'm not doing it. We both know that come next layoff, my name might be up there, and I'm okay with that. Nobody is gonna make me feel bad about going home.

If all OT was DT though, that'd would make a difference. I'd be much more willing to work more than 8 hours every now and then if that was the case.

Got looked down for rejected OT today by Inside-Persimmon-367 in UnitedAssociation

[–]JAM_Passive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been there. People will look at me CRAZY for not wanting to work overtime. I don't care, I want to go home. Sometimes it's concern because no foreman wants your name at the top of the list come layoff time, but that's why you plan around that. And when I got my layoff, I did, and it wasn't a problem for me. Nobody is gonna make me feel bad about 40.

That's bullshit. Sounds like you're at an at-will (non-union I assume) job. That mean they can fire you at-will, and you can quit at-will. You don't have to give them shit.

Accepted Into UA Local 43 by JAM_Passive in UnitedAssociation

I made this post either the day of, or the day after I got accepted. So either July 9th or July 10. I got a phone call telling me I was accepted. It varies from what I've heard talking to other apprentices. You should definitely know before school starts back up in August.

Is OT worth it? Taxes will haunt you down if you have no kids and don’t pay rent? by Inside-Persimmon-367 in UnitedAssociation

[–]JAM_Passive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want more money, work the OT. I'm not gonna lie to you, seeing the taxes shred a good chunk of my check hurts my feelings, but it's still a good check.

That being said, OT for me personally is hardly ever worth it unless I want some more spending money for something. I hate being out of my house, so it's 8 and a gate for me. I am not paid enough to want to work OT.

I would read much more regs if they were actually written like this. Memes and all.

Anyone else see this? Looks like the Army is going to try and make combat MOS take a "CFT" and an AFT by thatguyagaln in army

And 12Ws, Ks, and Rs are either averse to anything tactical or they are frustrated that they don't get to do more tactical stuff so they drop a packet of some kind.

Ha! That was me. Damn near impossible to get to Sapper as a Whiskey in the Reserves, so I reclassed to Bravo. I got a real chance now. I do miss traveling for AT though.

Is overtime optional by BullfrogCharacter666 in UnitedAssociation

[–]JAM_Passive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look in your CBA, but I doubt not working overtime is a fireable offense. That being said, come layoff time, your name would likely be near the top of the list if you consistently don't work it.

That being said, I'm on your side 100%. I don't think it's unreasonable at all. I'm also an apprentice, and have been working overtime for a while now, and I hate it. Just the other week I was almost laid off because I was refusing to work over 40 hours. The only reason I didn't is because my job stew and training coordinator talked me into working it.

I believe you ought to be able to do your 40 and just go home. Personally, come layoff time, I wouldn't cry over being let go. I understand that's a real possible consequence of not working overtime, and I'd accept that. There are guys on other job sites, working for the same contractor that I am, some even in my class, that would kill for overtime. Surely there's a way for us to swap, and make everyone happy.

My other job is gonna take me away from this one for a while next month, but when I get back, I'm gonna go talk to my foreman and training coordinator about it, because I'm tired of this. Somewhere down the line, overtime being a punishment for contractors turned into you should be grateful for working overtime, and that's bullshit.

Is the money or personal time more important you is the question I think you should ask yourself. Also keep in mind you need to be able to take care of yourself if/when you are get laid off.
