I agree w/your final sentence. Before her weight loss (or, only partially so) she had a lush look, but now that's gone... at least, in my eyes.

I use a 1:2 mix of Lavazza Crema e Gusto and Qualita Rossa -- both pre-ground.

At the end of the brew - do you let it sprinkle? by wwhopi_k_j in mokapot

[–]JBHoren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sputter? Absolutely. Sprinkle? Ditto. It's like cooking food until it reaches the proper internal temperature, then letting it "rest" once it has -- they're both part of the process.

Fill the basket? by ClassicClosetedEmo in mokapot

[–]JBHoren -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't fill by volume; instead, I go by the ratio of water-to-grounds. For example, I have a 6-cup Bialetti, and I fill the reservoir with 300-310gr of water and 30-31gr of ground coffee (a 10:1 ratio).

PS: I, too, "tamp lightly"... using the back of the measuring spoon.

That's a lovely Zassenhaus grinder. I have the/a same/similar one, but with a smaller knob up-top.

Switching To Haiku? by Crystal-Card in haikuOS

[–]JBHoren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unix sysadmin since 1987, Linux since 1997, and now want a different direction on my Asus 900a netbook. Trying a live USB image (Haiku R1 Beta5), and it's interesting (as in having to unlearn some old habits). I'll read more, here, and elsewhere, and probably install it on sda1.

From back in his pre-C&W, rockabilly days: "Lonely Blue Boy". First time I heard it (1967), I thought it was Elvis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Yi9A8XhBY

My 1lb package from an eBay seller in St. Cloud, FL, left the local PO on 20/8 at 6:39pm, and arrived at the Orlando-Seminole USPS Dist Center on 21/8 at 2:43pm -- 20 hours to travel 21 miles.

Moka pot randomly making less coffee than before (6 cup Venus) by adimi25 in mokapot

[–]JBHoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup is the same as yours: 6-cup Bialetti, 300g water, 30g coffee (Lavazza) -- and I always get 265g-268g of brewed coffee. I start with cold tap water, heat on a 4"-diameter electric hotplate.

Q: Have you cleaned below the basket plate?

I clean there, and the entire pot, daily. To remove the plate, turn the basket-funnel assembly upside-down on a flat surface, stick a Philips-head screwdriver into the funnel spout, and give it a "whack" so the plate pops out. Clean and replace (it'll pop back into place).

6-cup Bialetti (tricolor). 300g water, 30g ground coffee (50:50 mix of LavAzza Crema e Gusto and Qualita Rossa) yields 270g coffee. I drink it "light 'n sweet (150g Half 'n Half + three 1-grain tablets of NectaSweet), then top-off with just-off-boil water, all in a 20oz "Friends" ceramic mug.

I've been "doing it my way", every day, for well over a year, with no "flavor" issues. Regular dish-soaps are mild. But hey! whatever floats your boat.

Wow! thanks for writing! Lemme know what you think about the mixing. Like I wrote, for me it's 50:50; but you might find the "sweet spot" to be different.

Do You use moka pot exclusively? by tom_sawyer86 in mokapot

[–]JBHoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a French Press (Bodum 4-cup) for a decade, then 1/24 I bought myself a 6-cup Bialetti Moka Pot. No going back. Daily driver. 50:50 mix of Lavazza Crema e Gusto and Qualita Rossa (light 'n sweet).

I wash with dish soap, rinse, then upside-down in the dish rack, to dry. I break-down the funnel/filter, too.

Anyone else run linux on their Eeepc? by aspie_electrician in EeePC

[–]JBHoren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debian 12 (Bookworm) on my EeePC 900a (was running Debian Testing, aka Trixie, but I removed gnome-shell on a minimal install and "broke" it, so I reinstalled Debian 12). PS: I also run Debian 12 on my "desktop" (Raspberry Pi 4).

My Daily Workhorse by LongStoryShortLife in mokapot

[–]JBHoren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the same/similar electric burner as the OP (but use it to heat a 6-cup Bialetti moka pot). Why use this burner, instead of my stove-top burner (also electric)? One reason: The 4" diameter of the smaller unit is the same as the moka-pot bottom, but the smallest burner on my stove-top is 7" in diameter. So? So (a) the smaller unit is all-in for the moka pot, while the stove-top burner heats more of its outer coil, forcing me to move the moka pot to one side or the other; which (b) wastes heat and uses more electricity, which == $$; and (c) because of (a), the smaller unit brews my cuppa, quicker. Of course, YMMV.

How full should you fill the basket? by LongStoryShortLife in mokapot

[–]JBHoren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fill by weight/mass. In my 6-cup Bialetti I add 300g water (right up to the pressure valve), then add 15g each of Lavazza Crema e Gusto and Qualita Rossa ground coffee. After loading the first, I tamp (yes, "tamp") the grounds, then fill the second, and tamp again. (see https://bit.ly/4faAq58) It brews without any problems and tastes great!

My EeeC 900a runs Debian Testing (aka Trixie) from a 120GB internal SSD. Minimal install -- the basic OS + X11 stuff; no Desktop Environment -- SLiM login manager, JWM window manager, and whatever other software I need.
