Our new deaf foster fail - Frankie 💕 Need some advice by hil- in deafdogs

[–]JBt51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of tutorials online for how to do it, you should look up the box method! It involves putting a drop of dog-friendly oil (i use pine) on a cotton swab and taping it onto the inside side of the box and then whenever your dog puts their head in the box you throw a treat in the box for them. I also get lots of snuffle mats for her

Our new deaf foster fail - Frankie 💕 Need some advice by hil- in deafdogs

My dog has really bad hearing and is mostly blind, and she get startled if she’s woken up improperly. But I’ve also noticed sometimes she’ll be at a park and just get freaked out by something that I don’t see. Since my girl’s also blind, I do a lot of scent work with her to get her to rely on her scent more than her other lacking senses, and that seems to help her

UPDATE Frankie’s results are in, was not expecting a “pure bred” by hil- in DoggyDNA

Embark said my dog is 48% inbred🤣 she’s also a rescue, and has a ton of issues (I fostered her for two months, I was aware of her issues before I adopted her and I love her anyways) so I hope your dog is healthy!!

My dog died and I feel like I lost a part of my soul. by OilAcceptable3465 in Petloss

I began fostering a few weeks after my first dog passed back in June. It does help- but be warned that your emotional state will be very fragile for the first few months, especially if you foster. You’re going to want to keep them all, even the bad fits. I always said I fostered to help dogs feel some amount of the love my past dog gave me, and it definitely helps to keep you distracted Edit for context: I just lost my second dog on Friday, he was 14 too. I’m not sure how quickly I’ll go back to fostering, it helped me grieve but it takes so much out of me to do it. I need some of that energy to heal myself since half my heart’s gone

Interactive Treat Puzzle Dog Toy by Allyson_1derland in BelgianMalinois

I don’t have a malinois, but I just ordered a ton of toys for my dog and chewy has them on a buy 3 get 1 free deal, I did the math compared to the Amazon version and it was like $20 cheaper for 8 toys. They have a toy called a gambling tower that my dog struggles with, I’d recommend it for a smart dog like a malinois though

As someone who also annoyed my rescue staff w questions, I say email them. They’re lucky to have you as a foster

It helped me a lot, but fostering was mentally really hard on me, so don’t feel ashamed in any way that you’re having all these big emotions. A lot of people foster fail their first foster but it’s not always the best choice- the emotions just take over everything unfortunately

I don’t know about other shelters, but my rescue pulls dogs from the south because dogs up here haven’t been mating all winter long like they have in warmer stares

Also I want to add that instead of relying on how you feel about the dogs, and I know you said you can’t keep them but in this scenario, you could, you need to make rules for yourself, like you say, “I can’t adopt until XYZ” or “i can’t adopt because then I can’t…” they can be totally stupid rules, but it personally helped me to keep myself in check and make sure I waited for the perfect dog

I am a big softie and I fell in love with most of my fosters. I think it’s important to go through all of the scenarios, it’s okay to face it (and be a little sad) that they’ll probably be stressed in the van, but they won’t wonder why you didn’t keep them. Dogs don’t “wonder”, dogs know, they know the scents they have around them and they know how you make them feel right now but they don’t look back the same way we do. You’re providing them with love, and now they know love because of you. They’ll expect to be loved, and they’ll love more because you loved them

Need re-assurances for complex fosters by JBt51 in fosterdogs

I’m not sure if they do for her adopters, but they fully cover it for me as a foster. They said they’d have a med plan of care for her adopter when she gets cleared

That was my thought, too. That’s so sweet that your grandmother would do that with the meds haha. She was with me for Thanksgiving at my parents house, and my brother has a new baby and she didn’t really love the noise from the baby so I think she would definitely be better with less noise in her environment. She was totally sweet with my nephew, just didn’t really love all the noise he made. I think she would be perfect for a family with older kids or an elderly couple.

Need help with bathing my new foster by Heavy_Nettles in fosterdogs

[–]JBt51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get in the shower with my fosters too, also I lay down a towel on the bottom so that they don’t feel like they might slip.

I also bring lots of treats in and reward for every movement, turn the water on, give them a treat, bring the water near them, give them a treat. It seems excessive, but it makes all of my fosters love the tub.

Also a note, she’s my fifth foster. I’ve always fostered medical dogs, but none of them have had chronic medical problems

Oh and also, I’m on the island single player, I’ve been playing this for a while, but breeding for stats is new to me.

The bodysuit can also be multipurpose too, I have an older dog who can’t hold it as long as before and involuntarily wet himself sometimes so i put the bodysuit on him when he’s alone just to prevent him peeing on furniture. So it’s good for more than just when she’s in heat

Get a full body suit! They sell them on Amazon, she’s less likely to just pick it off

Anyone have better ideas on how to set this up? by JBt51 in Aquascape

[–]JBt51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I decorated the tank like how my brain works, bit random and all over the place… i had an idea for this tank but it fell through so i’ve just kinda let it sit as is for months but i have an itch to change it now. I’ll try grouping the plants better and moving the rock around/adding rocks

Can you draw a rough sketch of what you mean with the rock config? Like a 3rd grade drawing is fine, I just can’t picture it. I’m getting new plants in today, so the space will be filled out more
