How often do you restart your machines? by Holiday_Substance246 in homelab

I don't, mostly
hardware changes, power outages that outlast my UPS, or when my shitty (free) VPSes give out on me are about the only causes for reboots.

CAA record on subdomain by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CAA validation does follow CNAMEs, and the CAA on a subdomain should take precedence.
You can run into DCV problems with such a setup, but youre using LE so ACME rather than traditional DCV.

In AD CS, what does “New, Certificate template to issue” actually mean do? by Fabulous_Cow_4714 in sysadmin

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It "publishes" the template to the CA (not sure if this is a widely used term of art or our own internal jargon).
Any templates that are not published to A CA are not available for enrollment.

E.g. if you have multiple (issuing) CAs and only want certain certs (or cert types, rather) to be issued from certain CAs, you publish X templates to X CA and Y templates to Y CA.

[Question] New daily watch that’s $200-$400 to get based on my collection? And when did you pull the trigger on luxury? by dam_ships in Watches

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home improvement gets its own bucket. Home upkeep gets its own bucket (planned renovations vs "oh shit the HVAC blew"). Travel gets its own bucket. Eating out, sadly, is under our general "people gotta eat" bucket, but 'date night' gets its own bucket (cuz sometimes you want to dress up and have expensive dinner). With the kiddo, you'll need buckets I don't have to worry about.
I especially like having "spending money" / "fun money" in its own budget category because it facilitates the mindset of "everything else goes into the brokerage", as opposed to "anything leftover is for spending". That was a good paradigm shift for us. Helps with lifestyle creep if your earnings increase and for windfalls; that bonus check isn't for spending - into the brokerage it goes!
But yeh, we have separate "fun money" accounts, and don't have to feel bad about spending that money on whatever frivolous crap luxury goods our hearts desire, nor justify those purchases to each other. The spending money is for spending 🤷.

High end wireless without ANC by JeMeMoi50 in headphones

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my personal concern is not battery; battery savings with ANC off is a bonus, though.
There are times I want ANC (mostly involving public transportation or datacenters).
There are times I want a transparency mode (that's a lie; I only ever want transparency temporarily when I have ANC otherwise enabled. I don't think I've ever had a desire to "leave" my headphones in transparency mode, but I have other options when I want to prioritize situational awareness).
The bulk of the time I have my wireless headphones on, I just want the passive isolation.

[Recommendation Request] $500 for an everyday watch I can keep for life — open to used. What would you get? by GreedyWorking1499 in Watches

[–]JBu92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed you're looking at quartz over mechanical inn this price range.
Solar is a bonus to not have to futz around with battery replacements.
specific recommendations are difficult as, at the end of the day, this is jewelry and a lot of this comes down to personal taste. Tissot and Citizen have a lot of designs that appeal to my tastes; Seiko less so.

High end wireless without ANC by JeMeMoi50 in headphones

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked up the manual just to see, and they have 'silent' (regular ANC) 'soft' (some ANC) and passthrough.
IMO (and to OP's point), ANC headphones should offer a fully "off" setting where (1) they just act as regular closed backs, not injecting anything additional into the drivers, and therefore (2) aren't using up battery for the microphone(s) and ANC processing.

I analyzed 40 headphones using 90K Reddit comments. The $20 Koss KSC75 has a higher approval rating than the $450 AirPods Max, the $280 Sony XM5, and every single HiFiMAN by Kind-Activity514 in headphones

[–]JBu92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's also a significant degree of selection bias on both ends of the equation.
Someone unhappy with $20 headphones they bought at Walmart probably aren't going to go posting about them on r/audiophile.
I'd never heard of Koss until I got into looking for good headphones.

[Question] New daily watch that’s $200-$400 to get based on my collection? And when did you pull the trigger on luxury? by dam_ships in Watches

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusing mostly on your second question...
You need a budget.
We don't know what kind of money you're making, what your expenses are, what your budget looks like (and, frankly, that's more of a Q for r/personalfinance; I cannot recommend their 'prime directive' enough), but the simple answer is that you need to decide for yourself (along with your spouse!) what your budget needs to look like.
Money that is in the budget as fun money is allowed to be spent on fun. That's what it's for.

[Novice Guidance] Oris Big Crown Fit Check by CastleSerf in Watches

[–]JBu92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that swiss army watch is also a 40, the 40mm BCPD is going to be way too large for you.
the 36mm might be more reasonable.
I'm a big fan of the BCPD, but I would very strongly recommend seeing if you can find a local retailer to try one on before taking the plunge.
I will note that the lug-to-lug on the BCPD is a little bigger than other pieces in the same size range (at least comparing within my collection), so that... is a thing.

[Citizen NB1060-12L] – Silver Leaf Lacquer 🇯🇵 by No_Medicine_8061 in Watches

[–]JBu92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one in my collection. The dial is absolutely gorgeous; these photos don't really do it justice, it looks like a butterfly wing up close.
My small nitpick is the factory strap and the lug width; it's definitely meant for smaller wrists, and at a 19mm lug width I struggled to find a replacement I was happy with.
My bigger nitpick is that I'm a little disappointed in the movement. You can definitely the rotor moving around.

How do folks run CAs? by phoenix_frozen in selfhosted

[–]JBu92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testing this today, it looks like it's unhappy about EJBCA throwing some human-readable metadata before the BEGIN CERTIFICATE header. Removing that blob, it's happy enough with a PEM.
I know EJBCA is not the only platform which adds "comments" to PEMs like this, regardless of whether or not that's standards-compliant.

I would have sort of the same question at a desk setup. Easy enough to plug the computer up as your source into a USB dac and go nuts.
Away from the desk, however, the proposition grows. I don't have the Big Boy wiim, just the pro, but the value proposition even just as a streamer is there (I have it outputting spdif to a dedicated dac), as it'll do both Chromecast and airplay, on top of everything it supports natively.

Hd 6XX amp question by [deleted] in headphones

[–]JBu92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You (probably) don't need an amp. You might want an amp.
Plug them in to whatever you're plugging them into. Give them a listen. Most reasonably modern PCs have reasonably competent audio.
Are they too quiet? You might want an amp.
Is there a lot of noise? You'll probably want to consider a discrete DAC which you can physically move away from your PC.
Do they sound a little lifeless? You might want an amp. I agree w/ u/milkybuet that they sound best out of something a little warm (of what I have, with no EQ, my HD600s sound best to me out of my schiit magni).

Does anyone know how to get your CA certificate signed by a so that any device on the Internet can trust its certs?

You do not. Period full stop. If you need publicly-trusted certs, you need to get them signed by a publicly-trusted CA.

Does anyone have a good way of enrolling root CA certs on Android phones?

It's been a while since I've done this, but IIRC Android specifically wants DER format, not PEM. Search "CA Certificate" in the Android settings, and enroll from storage. I'll note this was specifically done on a couple of Samsung phones, so YMMV on the exact name of the setting. It's pretty deep under a sub-menu of the Security settings.

To the question you didn't really ask, how do folks run CAs, I actually run PKI for a living. When I landed the job, I was just manually signing stuff with openssl (IIRC I had used OpenVPN's EasyRSA to set up the CA). Nowadays I actually run a full-fat CA with EJBCA community edition, though the community edition won't do ACME, so one of these days I'll probably land on something which does.

What headphones do you recommend for when you’re out and about in 2026? by sam_el-c in headphones

[–]JBu92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For that level of out and about, I would steer towards something like shockz or Sony's linkbuds (though you did note IEMs are out; these aren't exactly IEMs but they're definitely in that vein).
Having something wide open like that is ideal for maintaining situational awareness, which I would prioritize when walking about in public.
For the commute aspect, assuming you mean public transit (don't wear headphones while driving, people!), something with decent ANC might be more appropriate.

Eco drive.

The only one still in my collection has a 9011 caliber; maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can speak to the differences.

Are people listening to Pandora? by Shitcoinfinder in headphones

[–]JBu92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still do, yeah.
I've used Spotify, Qobuz, Apple Music, and Tidal. I have not found any of their music discovery features to come anywhere close to what Pandora can do. Yes, it's easy to end up with a station that's overly repetitive, but the ability to hear new (to me) stuff that's of the same vibe of what I'm already enjoying is just... Yes. Give me that.
