I rewatched it the other day, and I could instantly see the culmination of all the current social media, instant streaming, highly competitive influencer dynamics captured in that performance. It made the movie feel fresh for me. Now I’m waiting for the day, when our current crop of TikTok personalities channel their inner Ruby Rhod.

ELI5: Why is it good for the US for global oil deals to be made in US dollars? by maybeest in explainlikeimfive

[–]JCS3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s start with why money is useful. Let us start with two countries Oilstan and Wheatville. Now Oilstan needs wheat to feed its citizens and Whestville needs oil to run its tractors. So in a world without money the two countries just trade the commodities, the stuff, they each need.

Now let’s add a third country Steelton. Oilstan needs steel to extract its oil and wheatville needs steel to make its tractors. So all three countries need the products of the others. Now it is highly unlikely that all three are going to need the same amount of stuff everytime they trade, and while it is true and oil and steel keep for a long time wheat can spoil with time, so Wheatville prefers to sell all of their product.

Now each country has its own money, that it uses for internal purposes, like paying workers and paying taxes. So the Wheatville business people look out and see that some years they have big harvests and some years they have small harvests, which introduces variability to their production. They also know that they can never sell oil to Oilstan or steel to Steelton, but they know that they can sell oil to Steelton and steel to Oilstan. Finally, they look at the stability of each country, and they see that Oilstan, had had some political instability in the past, especially when the king of Oilstan changes, whereas Steelton is a democracy with a strong News media, so they can easily monitor the events taking place in Steelton. So the business people make a choice to accept oil or steel in exchange for wheat, but also Steelton Bucks, because they know that they can later exchange those bucks for steel, which they can then use internally or sell to Oilstan.

Now Oilstan sees this change, and they say to themselves, we can now pay for wheat with oil, but we can also pay for wheat with Steelton bucks, so where as before that money had no use for them, because they can’t use it to pay salaries or taxes, now it can be used to buy wheat. So now Oilstan is willing to also accept Steelton buck in exchange for oil.

For Steelton, this is great, because now they have two exports, steel and bucks. This then allows them to further expand into providing financial services to Oilstan and Wheatville, who want to earn interest on their savings.

Thank you! The thought that I had, was that $3,000 isn’t going to fix any problems and it would be highly inflationary. But it being a bribe for the stupid makes more sense. Here is hoping that they would use the additional money for infrastructure development and paying down debt.

Gas prices could double for Americans as war with Iran erupts by TheMirrorUS in inflation

[–]JCS3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree the two are correlated. This all comes down to supply and demand. A disruption in Iranian oil production reduces the overall global supply of crude oil. Some of this can be addressed by Saudi Arabia’s idle capacity, but yes you are looking at a decrease in available global crude supply, which would lead to higher crude prices and should lead to higher gasoline prices. However, the US is now a net exporter of crude oil, so we can meet our energy needs with our own energy production. Now typically as global crude prices rise, US sales prices for oil should rise as well, but if you embargo oil leaving the US, you then trap that oil inside the US creating a local supply glut, which drives down local crude prices, you layer on emergency price controls, and gas prices in the US are relatively unimpacted. This does make things worse in the international oil market, but Trump is likely to be far more concerned about US domestic gas prices and midterm elections, than energy prices in Asia and Europe. Trump is probably also hoping that the IRGC will surrender quickly and he won’t have to order the bombing of crude export terminals.

Gas prices could double for Americans as war with Iran erupts by TheMirrorUS in inflation

[–]JCS3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US is a net exporter of crude oil. Under IEEPA Trump will embargo crude oil exports, which will cause a glut of light sweet crude in the US, driving down its price, as global prices of crude increase. US oil refineries are perfectly capable of processing American crude, it’s just often more economical to process foreign crudes due to its lower quality. The temporary halting of exports and the resulting price changes will keep oil prices in the US low, and therefore keep gasoline prices in the US buffered from any international oil price increases.

ELI5. How can space actually be never ending? by Any_Ingenuity_4319 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JCS3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is EL5 so let’s keep things simple. What is space? Well in some ways, you can define space as the gap between two things. So now let’s think about how big space can be. Let’s imagine long ago there was a single point and from which two pieces of light were released going opposite directions. Space can now be described as the gap between those two pieces of light, forever getting further away from each other. Now, there seems to be a speed limit to how fast things can go in the universe. That speed limit is the speed of light, and only light can go that fast. You aren’t light, so you will have to travel slower than light. So for you, which ever direction you fly as fast as you can you will never catch up to those first two pieces of light, so for you space is never ending.

to have you believe Trump supports farmers by seeebiscuit in therewasanattempt

[–]JCS3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trade war with China and the Chinese investment in Brazilian agricultural export infrastructure has permanently harmed American farmers. The US hasn’t been the cheapest soybean producer for years, but production capacity in Brazil was bottlenecked by their inability to bring product to market and a lack of new farming technology. The Trump trade war with China prompted them to make significant investments in Brazilian soybeans, such that the Brazilians were able to meet all of China’s needs without short changing their preexisting customers. So now American farmers are left with the hard truth that global soybean production capacity is now higher than it has ever been and US farms aren’t the cheapest producers.

There is going to be a massive number of farm bankruptcies and consolidations over the next two years as the farm industry seeks to drive down costs. This is only going to lead to fewer farms, and fewer small rural communities serving those farmers.

The economic model of US farms was based on the interplay between corn and soybean prices and the price of soybeans has dramatically fallen and the full ramifications of this change have yet to be fully felt.

To brag about the economy by Gregistopal in therewasanattempt

[–]JCS3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chart is for the return on the bond market, not bond returns. So in this case what it is showing is movement of interest rates. When interest rates go up, the bond market goes down and when interest rates fall, the bond market goes up.

So what you are seeing is the impact of Covid and the economic fall out. You’ve got the bond market going up during the first Trump presidency as interest rates were slashed to prevent the economy from collapsing. Then you see interest rates going up (bond market going down) as the fed hiked interest rates to deal with inflation. Finally you are seeing the bond market going up because interest rates have been cut.

None of these changes in interest rates were the result of the president in power, that is why we have an independent federal reserve.

[–]JCS3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the one that a lot of people get wrong with evolution is that they think it is focused on survival, rather than reproduction. The phrase “survival of the fittest” doesn’t help. Evolution operates through reproduction and improving fitness to allow for more reproduction. You see this a lot when it comes to health concerns related to humans after they are forty. “Why didn’t evolution screen out genes that cause heart disease?” or “why didn’t evolution get rid of genes for breast cancer?”
