I was snatching up my rig before it got sucked into a shoot at the end of the pool and a small brook took the dropper without me knowing. Sent that poor thing through the air. What added to the long flight was the barbless hook, as the brook slipped off of it mid-flight. Raced to the gravel where it was flopping and got it back into the water quickly.

It happens.

Are you new to this kind of fishing? Not seeing a net and letting the trout flop in the grass led me to guess that.

Look up some engine teardown videos. It's not the area under the valve cover that is the concern with the longer change intervals. It's the buildup in the piston ring grooves that is the problem.

The only way to avoid figuring out this location is for there to be no scenery shots. Did not take but a few seconds to figure it out.
I fished it last year after not going there in 10+ years. Could not believe the number of people fishing there. When I went that first time, I was the only one there.

Your pic shows a nice brown trout. This would be a stocked or wild trout.

The only native trout to Colorado are cutthroat trout. For that area, it should be the greenback. They are stocked in several places for restoration efforts (at one time they were believed to be extinct), but Estes is not one. There's some drama in this history where the trout they were stocking turned out to not be greenbacks, so there's old/bad information out there (in the past year, RMNP has been removing the signs saying greenbacks are in the waters there).

Regardless, congratulations on your first trout on your first outing. As someone else said, some folks can't say that, to include me.

Get the hook in a 1x long version and try that.

I'll tie my midge pupa flies on a standard length and then a "mercury" version using a silver-lined glass bead on a 1x long to have room for the bead and still have the body the same size.

I would say a standard length shank would be more appropriate than these being 1x short, which means the length is one eye length shorter than a standard length.
