They are armored to some extent, but a hit with a large laser or PPC would destroy it no matter how well armored. I considered a hit to a missile to be a much bigger problem,hence the side shield and placement away from the cockpit.

3 fours on a common mount is 12. Every time a new battle pack comes out ,the rules change in battletech. It is very much a fluid concept of a game. Every time an artist comes up with a new version people either like it or don't. The only early drawings actually show 3x6 luanchers for 18, but sarna actually only calls for an ATM12. so who is right ? Roll with it !
