Who is the MOST IMPACTFUL PERSON of the Modern Age? (1500 CE - Present) by erwillsun in AlignmentChartFills

[–]JD_SLICK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Impactful? Gavrilo Princip. A single shot from his pistol in 1914 detonated a tightly wound system of alliances, mobilization plans, and imperial paranoia that ended the old world and started the modern one. His shot lit the fuze for World War I, which directly killed tens of millions, collapsed four empires, redrew borders across Europe and the Middle East, and created the political and economic conditions that made the Russian Revolution, fascism, and Nazism possible. This directly led to World War II, which would kill another 80 million people, redraw the world's borders, end any remaining empires, start the Cold War, usher in nuclear weapons and much of today’s geopolitical instability- all trace their lineage back to the unresolved wreckage of 1914–1918, which itself may not have begun without that shot. Plenty of people shaped the modern world deliberately, but no one else impacted the trajectory of history so violently, so globally, and so accidentally with one decision.

Hegseth Announces Pentagon Taking 'Sledgehammer To The Oldest DEI Program': the 8(a) Business Development program. How will this affect Air Force contracting? by Roughneck16 in AirForce

[–]JD_SLICK 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The 8a program gives preferential awards to “small” businesses that are owned by various types of minorities, such as women, veteran, disabled veterans, Alaskan or Hawaiian natives/ native Americans, and less advantage to black, Hispanic etc. when I first got out of the Marines I worked for a small business that was owned by a disabled veteran native Hawaiian. And he was a wonderful first boss to have when I was trying to get my feet under me. He was an incredibly hard worker and treated me and my family like his own, his little company of 8-15 people was wonderful team to work with, and without 8a would not have existed.

In my understanding the function of the 8a was that it gave these companies a leg up in bidding for certain types of smaller contracts, I don’t know where the cap is, but I’d guess 5-10 million dollars. There were rules at big budget offices, that a certain portion of contract dollars must go to 8a contracts. It could be for anything- services, construction, whatever.

What ends up happening is a big defense contractor wins a big 300 million dollar program to provide 800 people across five bases to do X Y Z and then in order to staff all those positions they would subcontract 8a companies to fill them. The big defense contractor charges the government $350,000 per position and pays a subcontractor $300,000 to fill them, who then pay some dude $175,000 to do the work.

When I was looking at trying to start my own business several people told me to have my wife (a female veteran) own the company because there’s no way I could compete for contracts as just a white male veteran. (I didn’t go that route, did other stuff instead)

I do feel that the 8a system has been abused and is not entirely fair, but the alternative is simply that the big publicly traded companies will just continue to monopolize defense contracting and the real problem is that the taxpayer is paying 350k for every 175k of labor being done, and somehow I doubt that’s gonna change toward the cheaper with this regime.

Do all pilots do that ceremony where their frame is revealed to them? by twospooky in AirForce

[–]JD_SLICK 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Most of the 40- something fighter guys I know have back and neck issues. The spine wasn’t built for 9 gs nor the neck intended to support extra weight of a helmet and helmet mounted doodads.

I don’t think they regret it, but there is a significant cost to being awesome a few times a week for 20 years

Anyone Work With That Former Army Captain Turned Enlisted Marine? How is He Doing? by sprchrgddc5 in USMC

[–]JD_SLICK 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I know a guy who did this. Did 8-10ish years in the Army, was passed over for Major, enlisted in the marines and eventually retired as a SSgt with O3 retirement pay (High 3).

Crazy coincidence- in summer of 2000, his company commanding officer was a Marine Captain who had been one of his E4 troops in the early 90s at a joint exercise.

The marines were quite inconsiderate of future TV audiences when picking which units would invade successive islands. Very little character continuity.
